Item Indium antimonide and gallium antimonide were synthesized from the respective component elements using an indigenously fabricated synthesis unit. Bulk crystals of indium antimonide and gallium antimonide were grown using both the vertical and horizontal Bridgman techniques. Effect of ampoule shapes and diameters on the crystallinity and homogeneity was studied. The grown crystals were characterized using X-ray analysis, EDAX, chemical etching, Hall effect and conductivity measurements. In the case of gallium antimonide, effect of dopants (Te and In) on transport and photoluminescence properties was investigated.(Growth and characterization of indium antimonide and gallium antimonide crystals) Udayashankar, N.K.; Bhat, H.L.2001Item Unintentionally doped homoepitaxial InSb films have been grown by liquid phase epitaxy employing ramp cooling and step cooling growth modes. The effect of growth temperature, degree of supercooling and growth duration on the surface morphology and crystallinity were investigated. The major surface features of the grown film like terracing, inclusions, meniscus lines, etc are presented step-by-step and a variety of methods devised to overcome such undesirable features are described in sufficient detail. The optimization of growth parameters have led to the growth of smooth and continuous films. From the detailed morphological, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopic and Raman studies, a correlation between the surface morphology and crystallinity has been established.(Indian Academy of Sciences, Influence of growth parameters on the surface morphology and crystallinity of InSb epilayers grown by liquid phase epitaxy) Udayashankar, N.K.; Bhat, H.L.2003Item Development of Zn-Co alloy coatings by pulsed current from chloride bath(2008) Thangaraj, V.; Udayashankar, N.K.; Hegde, A.Zinc-M (where M = Ni, Co and Fe) alloy is of great interest owing to their better mechanical and corrosion properties compared with pure zinc coatings. Corrosion resistance of Zn-Co alloy coatings can be improved considerably by pulse plating. The paper details the optimization of Zn-Co alloy bath using pulsed current and details the superiority of pulse plating over direct current plating. Electroplating of Zn-Co alloys over mild steel was carried out under different conditions of pulse parameters like duty cycle, frequency and peak current density. The production and properties of the deposits were found to be influenced by pulse parameters employed. Within the ranges studied, the bath follows anomalous codeposition with preferential deposition of less noble zinc. The influence of current density on %wt. of Co in the deposit and cathode current efficiencies was studied. It was observed that the deposit at average current density of 5.0 A.dm-2, 50% duty cycle and 100 Hz frequency showed excellent corrosion resistance with fine structure. The peak performance of pulse electrodeposit against corrosion was attributed to the change in the surface homogeneity as evidenced by scanning electron microscope (SEM) image. The drastic decrease of corrosion rate in pulse electrodeposit was attributed to the formation of semiconductor films on the surface as supported by impedance spectroscopy signals.Item Crystal structure of semiorganic antimony thiourea bromide monohydrate crystals: a redetermination(2009) Upadhya, M.K.; Udayashankar, N.K.The growth of antimony thiourea bromide monohydrate (ATBM) single crystals by evaporation technique at room temperature is reported here. Antimony thiourea bromide monohydrate crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmca with unit cell parameters a = 12.320(7) A, b = 11.668(7) A, c = 18.615(11), and z = 8. The structure has been solved by direct methods and refined to a final R value of 0.0239.Item Electrical switching behavior of bulk Si15Te85-xSbx chalcogenide glasses - A study of compositional dependence(2010) Lokesh, R.; Udayashankar, N.K.; Asokan, S.Studies on the electrical switching behavior of melt quenched bulk Si15Te85-xSbx glasses have been undertaken in the composition range (1 ? x ? 10), in order to understand the effect of Sb addition on the electrical switching behavior of Si15Te85-x base glass. It has been observed that all the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied exhibit a smooth memory type switching. Further, the switching voltages are found to decrease almost linearly with Sb content, which indicates that the metallicity of the dopant plays a dominant role in this system compared to network connectivity/rigidity. The thickness dependence of switching voltage (Vth) indicates a clear thermal origin for the switching mechanism. The temperature variation of switching voltages reveals that the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied have a moderate thermal stability. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. The complex crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with four formula units ofSb[CS(NH 2)2]2Cl3·Cl in the unit cell. The structure has been solved by direct methods and refined to a final-R value of 0.0393. The synthesized crystals are characterized by FT-IR, UV-visible and TGA-DTA techniques. The UVvis, FT-IR and fluorescence spectra were recorded and electron irradiation effects on these properties were studied. The optical absorption edge of the UVvis spectrum shifts towards lower wavelength with the increase of irradiation. The fluorescence quantum yield is increased for electron irradiated ATBM crystals. The FT-IR analysis shows that the water of crystallization is weakly bonded in as-grown and electron irradiated ATBM crystals. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. The present article deals with the investigations of effects of aging on the corrosion behavior of 6061 Al/SiCP composite and of the heat treatment on the pitting corrosion resistance of 6061 Al/SiCP composite coated by cerium oxide prepared by chemical bath technique. Potentiodynamic polarization test was used to study the corrosion behavior of cerium oxide coatings in 3. 5N NaCl solution. The microstructure of cerium oxide was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the formed phases were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The pitting corrosion resistance of the cerium oxide coating was found to be improved after heat treatment at 300°C for 30 min. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.Item Synthesis, microhardness, FT-IR, and thermal decomposition of semiorganic antimony thiourea bromide monohydrate single crystals(2012) Mahesha Upadhya, K.; Udayashankar, N.K.Antimony thiourea bromide monohydrate (ATBM) single crystals were grown by a solution growth technique at room temperature. Microhardness studies on the grown crystal were carried out using the Vickers microhardness tester to estimate the mechanical strength of the crystal. The FT-IR analysis ascertains the presence of a metal-sulphur bond in ATBM crystals. The thermal decomposition of ATBM crystals was investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011.Item Fabrication of nanoporous alumina and their structural characteristics study using SEM image processing and analysis(2012) Choudhari, K.S.; Padikkal, P.; Udayashankar, N.K.Nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes were fabricated by a two-step anodization process. Quantitative structural characterization was carried out using scanning electron microscopy images of the fabricated anodized alumina. An algorithm based on mathematical morphology was developed to extract pore size distribution with average, minimum, and maximum pore diameter of the nanoporous alumina. This technique of obtaining quantitative data based on image analysis could be an efficient, unbiased, and reliable method and can be used to control the fabrication parameters of anodization process.
