Abstract: Fluidized bed coating has been attempted with polyethylene powder on mild steel objects of different shapes such as rectangular, cylindrical and spherical. The present study on fluidized bed coating identifies the effect of system parameters on coating performance. Effects of a greater number of fluidization variables are included than reported in the literature. Existing analytical models on fluidized bed coating have been critically examined. A new model has been proposed with no assumptions regarding temperature profile within the coating and heat loss to the bed at the melting point of the polymer. A computer programme has been developed to solve the transient-coupled heat transfer between the object and the coating. A theoretical solution was compared with experimental data obtained. The agreement is good.
