Item Background. Digital watermarking is a technique of hiding specific identification data for copyright authentication. This technique is adapted here for interleaving patient information with medical images, to reduce storage and transmission overheads. Methods. The patient information is encrypted before interleaving with images to ensure greater security. The bio-signals are compressed and subsequently interleaved with the image. This interleaving is carried out in the spatial domain and Frequency domain. The performance of interleaving in the spatial, Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) coefficients is studied. Differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) is employed for data compression as well as encryption and results are tabulated for a specific example. Results. It can be seen from results, the process does not affect the picture quality. This is attributed to the fact that the change in LSB of a pixel changes its brightness by 1 part in 256. Spatial and DFT domain interleaving gave very less %NRMSE as compared to DCT and DWT domain. Conclusion. The Results show that spatial domain the interleaving, the %NRMSE was less than 0.25% for 8-bit encoded pixel intensity. Among the frequency domain interleaving methods, DFT was found to be very efficient. © 2004 Nayak et al, licensee BioMed Central Ltd.(Simultaneous storage of medical images in the spatial and frequency domain: A comparative study) Nayak, J.; Subbanna Bhat, P.; Acharya, A.U.; Niranjan, U.C.2004Item Conceptual model for the safe withdrawal of freshwater from coastal aquifers(2009) Mahesha, A.The effect of subsurface barrier on the motion of the saltwater-freshwater interface in coastal aquifers is analyzed for wide ranging freshwater pumping scenarios. A Galerkin finite-element model considering sharp interface approach is used for this purpose. A semi-pervious subsurface barrier extending up to impervious bottom of the aquifer is considered at certain distance inland, parallel to the seacoast. The effect of barrier is analyzed in checking the advancement of the saltwater-freshwater interface under different scenarios of freshwater withdrawals at seaward and landward locations of the barrier and compared with nonbarrier conditions. The results indicated that barrier is able to check the advancement of the intrusion significantly and in certain cases, the progress is completely stalled for withdrawals on the landward side. Also, marked variations in the interface profile are observed as compared to no barrier condition, especially, for the seaward freshwater developments. From the model, nearest possible locations from the seacoast have been worked out for the safe withdrawal of freshwater where their effects are negligible on the saltwater advancement. © 2009 ASCE.Item Design and synthesis of some new quinoline-3-carbohydrazone derivatives as potential antimycobacterial agents(Elsevier Ltd, 2010) Eswaran, S.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.; Pal, N.K.; Chowdhury, I.H.A series of 26 new quinoline derivatives carrying active pharmacophores has been synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro antituberculosis activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv (MTB), Mycobacterium smegmatis (MC2), and Mycobacterium fortuitum following the broth micro dilution assay method. Compounds 13e, 13i, 13k, 14a, 14c, 14i, and 14k exhibited significant minimum inhibition concentrations, when compared with first line drugs isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RIF) and could be ideally suited for further modifications to obtain more efficacious compounds in the fight against multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Item A comparative study on RBF and NARX based methods for forecasting of groundwater level(2011) Dandagala, D.; Deka, P.C.Evaluation and forecasting of groundwater levels through time series model (s) helps for the sustainable development of groundwater resources. The focus of the present study is on the application of Radial Basis Function (RBF) and Non Linear auto-regressive with exogenous variable (NARX) data driven models to forecast groundwater level for multiple input scenario's and also multiple lead time. Weekly time series groundwater level data has been used as input and the models are developed to forecast one, two, three, four, five and sixth week ahead. Root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (Cc) are used for evaluating the accuracy of the models. Based on the comparison of results, it was found that the RBF models are superior to the NARX models in forecasting groundwater level considering RMSE and Cc. The obtained result indicates that the RBF has high performance and consistent upto fourth week lead time and decaying performance for NARX models. Hence, RBF and NARX have the potential in forecasting groundwater level efficiently for multi step lead time. © 2011 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY. All rights reserved.Item Modelling operating speed and speed differential on intermediate lane rural roads(2012) Sowmya, N.J.; Ravi Shankar, A.U.; Anjaneyulu, M.V.L.R.Geometric design elements play an important role in defining the operational efficiency of any roadways. Considerable research has been undertaken worldwide to explore the design consistency concept including identifying potential consistency measures and developing models to estimate them. The main objective of this study is to investigate the design consistency of intermediate lane highways existing in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka state based on operating speed and speed differential models. The speed measurements are taken at the mid of tangent section and start of the curve during daylight, off-peak periods and under dry weather conditions. The multiple linear regression analysis technique in SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) software is used for model estimation. Both operating speed (85th percentile speed) and 85th percentile speed differential measures are used with geometric data to identify the design consistency of horizontal curves. A comparative study is performed to identify the variation between these two speed measures. Operating speed and speed differential models for intermediate lane rural roads are presented in this paper. © 2012 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY.Item Study on soil moisture retention function for the indian forested hillslope soils(Taiwan Geotechnical Society 43, Sec. 4, Keelong Rd, Taipei 106,, 2013) Prasanna, P.; Varija, K.; Kumar, P.Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) are one of the widely used tools to predict the soil water retention curves (SWRC). The objective of this study was to develop and validate point and parametric PTF models based on nonlinear regression technique using the different set of predictors such as particle-size distribution, bulk density, porosity and organic matter content. Soil samples were collected from different elevations at different depths in forested hillslope area of Pavanje river basin that lies in coastal area of Karnataka, India. The point PTF models estimated retention points at 33, 100, 300, 500, 1000, and 1500 kPa pressure heads and the parametric PTF models estimated the van Genuchten and Brooks-Corey retention parameters. The data were evaluated with the root mean square error (RMSE), mean error (ME), and coefficient of determination (R2) between the measured and predicted water contents. The prediction of soil water retention curve using PTFs by point estimation method for the sampled soils was relatively successful (best case R2 = 0.862). Further, a critical comparative analysis on the performances of point and parametric methods was done. It can be suggested to use the developed PTFs for the prediction of soil water retention curve for the loamy sand and sandy loam textured soils in this forest area of the coastal region in south western portion of India.Item Wettability of root canal sealers on intraradicular dentine treated with different irrigating solutions(2013) Nidambur, N.V.; Tweeny, A.; Khechen, K.; Prabhu, K.; Satyanarayan, S.; Tay, F.R.Objectives The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the wettability of AH Plus and ThermaSeal Plus sealers on intraradicular dentine treated with different irrigating solutions. Methods Fifty anterior teeth were decoronated and split longitudinally. Each root half was divided into 5 groups (n = 10). Group I: 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl + QMix. Group II: 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl + 17% EDTA. Group III: 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl + 7% maleic acid. Group IV: 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl. Group V: 5 mL of distilled water. Irrigation regimens were performed for 1 min. Each specimen was placed inside a Dynamic Contact Angle Analyser. A controlled-volume droplet of sealer was placed on each specimen and the static contact angle was analysed. Results The contact angle made by both sealers with EDTA-irrigated dentine was significantly larger when compared to the other irrigants (P < 0.05). For ThermaSeal Plus, contact angles produced on maleic acid-, NaOCl- and distilled water-irrigated dentine were not significantly different, but were all significantly larger than the contact angle produced on QMix-irrigated dentine (P < 0.05). For AH Plus, contact angles produced on NaOCl- and distilled water-irrigated dentine were not significantly different, but were significantly larger than those made by maleic acid and QMix. Conclusion When used as a final irrigant, QMix favours the wetting of root canal dentine by both AH Plus and ThermaSeal Plus sealers. Maleic acid shows a promising result when compared to EDTA and NaOCl. Wettability of both sealers is the worst on EDTA-irrigated dentine. Clinical significance The present study highlights the effect of newer endodontic irrigating solutions on the wettability of sealers on to the root canal dentine, which is required for obtaining good obturation seal. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.Item Solar light induced photocatalytic degradation of Reactive Blue 220 (RB-220) dye with highly efficient Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles: A comparison with UV photocatalysis(2014) Khanna, A.; Shetty K, K.Ag core-TiO2 shell (Ag@TiO2) structured nanoparticles with Ag to TiO2 molar ratio of 1:1.7 were synthesized using one pot synthesis method and post calcination was carried out at 450°C for 3h to convert it from amorphous to crystalline form. The Ag core and TiO2 shell formation was confirmed by TEM and AFM. The particle size analysis revealed the average size of Ag@TiO2 as approximately around 30nm. EDS spectra showed the presence of O, Ag, and Ti elements. The improvement in optical properties was proved by DRS which showed significant red shift by Ag core in visible region. Ag@TiO2 exhibited better photocatalytic activity as compared to Degussa P25-TiO2, synthesized TiO2, and the Ag doped TiO2 photocatalysts under UV and solar light irradiation for degradation of Reactive Blue 220 (RB-220) dye. Higher rate of photocatalysis of RB-220 with Ag@TiO2 was obtained under solar light irradiation as compared to UV light irradiation, confirming the capability of the catalyst to absorb both UV and visible light. The kinetics of degradation of dye was found to follow modified Langmuir Hinshelwood (L-H) kinetic model. Ag@TiO2 can be recycled without much decline in the efficacy. Ag@TiO2 has been found to be the effective photocatalyst for degradation of water contaminated with azo dyes under both UV and solar light irradiations. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.Item Comparison of Oceansat-2 scatterometer- to buoy-recorded winds and spatial distribution over the Arabian Sea during the monsoon period(Taylor and Francis Ltd. michael.wagreich@univie.ac.at, 2015) Gadad, S.; Deka, P.C.For this wind resource assessment (WRA) study, wind speed and direction are the fundamental inputs. Also, these studies are data driven and require large historical wind speed data sets available on the site. This work explores the application of space-based scatterometer winds for assimilation into WRA studies towards the development of offshore wind energy. This article focuses on estimating the performance of Oceansat-2 scatterometer (OSCAT)-derived wind vector using in situ data from buoys at different locations in the Arabian Sea. A comparative study between three methods for estimating the equivalent neutral winds (ENW) for buoys is carried out. OSCAT winds were closest to ENW estimated by the Liu–Katsaros–Businger (LKB) method. The spatial and temporal windows for comparison were 0.5° and ±60 minutes, respectively. The monsoon months (June–September) of 2011 were selected for study. The root mean square deviation for wind speed is less than 2.5 m s?1 and wind direction is less than 20°, and a small positive bias is observed in the OSCAT wind values. From the analysis, the OSCAT wind values are consistent with in situ-observed values. Furthermore, wind atlas maps were developed with OSCAT winds, representing the spatial distribution of winds at a height of 10 m over the Arabian Sea. © 2015 Taylor & Francis.Item Carotid inter-adventitial diameter is more strongly related to plaque score than lumen diameter: An automated tool for stroke analysis(John Wiley and Sons Inc. P.O.Box 18667 Newark NJ 07191-8667, 2016) Saba, L.; Araki, T.; Krishna Kumar, P.; Rajan, J.; Lavra, F.; Ikeda, N.; Sharma, A.M.; Shafique, S.; Nicolaïdes, A.; Laird, J.R.; Gupta, A.; Suri, J.S.Purpose: To compare the strength of correlation between automatically measured carotid lumen diameter (LD) and interadventitial diameter (IAD) with plaque score (PS). Methods: Retrospective study on a database of 404 common carotid artery B-mode sonographic images from 202 diabetic patients. LD and IAD were computed automatically using an advanced computerized edge detection method and compared with two distinct manual measurements. PS was computed by adding the maximal thickness in millimeters of plaques in segments taken from the internal carotid artery, bulb, and common carotid artery on both sides. Results: The coefficient of correlation was 0.19 (p < 0.007) between LD and PS, and 0.25 (p < 0.0006) between IAD and PS. After excluding 10 outliers, coefficient of correlation was 0.25 (p < 0.0001) between LD and PS, and 0.38 (p < 0.0001) between IAD and PS. The precision of merit of automated versus the two manual measurements was 96.6% and 97.2% for LD, and 97.7% and 98.1%, for IAD, respectively. Conclusions: Our automated measurement system gave satisfying results in comparison with manual measurements. Carotid IAD was more strongly correlated to PS than carotid LD in this population sample of Japanese diabetic patients. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
