Item Characterization of p-CdTe/n-CdS hetero-junctions(2009) Mahesha, M.G.; Bangera, K.V.; Shivakumar, G.K.Nano-crystalline CdTe/CdS thin film hetero-junctions have been grown on glass substrate by thermal evaporation technique. The growth conditions to get stoichiometric compound films have been optimized. The grown hetero-junctions have been characterized for their I-V characteristics. Analysis of I-V characteristics has been made to investigate the current conduction mechanism in p-CdTe/n-CdS hetero-junction. The band gap energy of cadmium telluride and cadmium sulfide films have been computed from the study of variation of resistance with temperature. Based on the study, band diagram for p-CdTe/n-CdS hetero-junction has been proposed.Item Ceria-samarium binary metal oxides: A comparative approach towards structural properties and soot oxidation activity(Elsevier B.V., 2018) Anjana, A.P.; Geethu, J.; P, M.R.; Prasad Dasari, H.P.; Lee, J.-H.; Harshini, H.; Bhaskar Babu, G.U.Binary metal oxides of CeO2-Sm2O3 (CSx, x varies from 10 to 90 mol%) along with pure CeO2 and Sm2O3 were synthesised successfully by the EDTA-Citrate method. From XRD, Raman spectroscopy and UV–vis DRS results, the whole composition of metal oxides exist in three phases: (fluorite phase (F) (CS10-CS30), bi-phase (fluorite (F) + cubic (C)) (CS30-CS90) and cubic phase (C) (Sm2O3)). For CSx samples, the calculated band gap energy values obtained from the UV–vis DRS results were in between 3.0–5.1 eV and fluorite phase samples (CS10–CS30) displayed lower band gap energy values (3.04–3.07 eV) than compared to the samples in other phases. Similarly, from XPS analysis, fluorite phase samples (CS10–CS30) showed higher surface oxygen vacancy concentration than compared to samples in other phases. Catalytic activity for soot oxidation is carried out on CSx samples, and the T50 temperature is in between 480–540 °C. Fluorite phase samples (CS10 CS30) showed higher surface area, lower degree of agglomeration, lower band gap energy, higher oxygen vacancy concentration and better catalytic activity for soot oxidation. Among all the CSx samples, CS10 sample displayed highest surface area (38 m2/g), lowest degree of agglomeration (0.36), lowest band gap energy (3.04 eV), highest oxygen vacancy concentration (64%) and highest soot oxidation activity (T50 = 480 °C). The order of the soot oxidation activity of CSx samples followed the same trend of band gap energy values. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.Item Graphene-mediated band gap engineering of WO3 nanoparticle and a relook at Tauc equation for band gap evaluation(Springer Verlag service@springer.de, 2018) Baishya, K.; Ray, J.S.; Dutta, P.; Das, P.P.; Das, S.K.Engineering the band gap of semiconductors is often crucial in the quest for developing new and advanced technologies. In this report, the implication of graphene on the band gap optimization of tungsten trioxide (WO3) is discussed. Simple one-step sol–gel process was followed to anchor WO3 nanoparticles in graphene. Graphene induces a redshift in the band gap of WO3. Band gap narrowing of 6.60% is observed for 7 wt% graphene-tethered WO3. Interestingly, a profound difference is observed in estimating the band gap energy values following the usual Tauc equation. Our observation suggests that the differential form of Tauc equation is better suited to determine the band gap energy of inorganic semiconductors than the typical extrapolation method. © 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.Item Optical and structural properties of BCBS glass system with and without alumina(Elsevier B.V., 2018) Bhattacharya, S.; Shashikala, H.D.BaO–CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 (BCAS) glass and their derivatives have gained extreme importance for their high endurance to elevated temperatures and being suitable for various electrochemical applications. Two glass systems, one being 50mol% [SiO2–B2O3]-xBaO-(45-x)CaO–5Al2O3 called as BCBSA and another without Al2O3 termed as BCBS were synthesized using melt quenching technique in the present work. Addition of ZnO and MgO as flux helped in melting them at 1300 °C which is much lower than the usual melting temperature of these glasses [1–4]. Density of the quenched glasses was measured by Archimedes method and structural bond vibrations were confirmed through FTIR. UV Visible spectroscopy was used to determine band gap energy and confirm the insulating nature of the synthesized glasses. The samples were isothermally heated at 700 °C, 800 °C for 50 h and at 900 °C for 50 and 100 h duration in air to allow the devitrification process to take place. The heat treated samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction to identify the developed phases. Five Al2O3 free samples synthesized at 1300 °C by regular melt quenching technique were found to be devoid of the monocelsian phase. This is a detrimental phase for high temperature sealant applications as it has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Al2O3 free BCBS glasses, properties of which are being reported for the first time and glasses with low BaO concentrations are found to meet the requirements for high temperature applications as sealants in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
