Item Wireless monitoring and control of deep mining environment using thingspeak and XBEE(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2020) Ramesh, B.; Vittal, K.P.The possibility of remotely monitoring and controlling the deep mining environment using Raspberry Pi is studied in this paper. The use of sensor and thingspeak to get the sensor data in the web and to obtain its graph in real-time is explored. Then the controlling of the raspberry pi with the help of XBee communication and remotely controlling by computer is studied. This is done for the moisture level control by using relay and pump as an example. This can be extended to other type of sensors which are of relevance in the deep mining environment and for internet of things applications. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.Item Reliability Analysis of LHD Machine - A Case Study(Springer Nature, 2020) BalaRaju, J.; Govinda Raj, M.; Murthy, C.S.N.In the present global scenario, survival of the industry is more critical unless it produces their intended targets. Accomplishment of expected rate of production levels are depends on the performance of equipment. Hence, it is very important to predict the maintenance schedules for replacement or repair actions of the defective parts. Keeping in view, every industry is constantly looking for enhancement equipment life. Reliability analysis is one of the well appropriated techniques used to estimate the life of the equipment. In this paper, performance of Load-Haul-Dumper (LHD) has been analyzed. Renewal process approach has been utilized for reliability investigation. Best fit distribution of data sets were made by the utilization of Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. Parametric estimation of theoretical probability distributions was done by utilizing Maximum Likelihood Estimate (MLE) method. Reliability of each individual sub-system has been computed according to the best fit distribution. In addition to that, reliability based preventive maintenance (PM) time schedules were calculated for the expected 90% reliability level. The possible recommendations were suggested for improvement of reliability level. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Item Worldwide, increasingly stringent regulations are coming into force, limiting the exposure of workers to industrial noise. Industrial noise and its consequences are thus growing in importance to employers, local and central government officials, trade unions, occupational hygienists and physicians and insurers. India is not an exception to this. The mining industry in India is facing serious problems over noise due to increasing demand for minerals for which large capacity machines are being deployed producing high noise levels. To know the status and to control the noise, the S&T Department of the Ministry of Coal, Government of India sponsored a research project in the area of noise pollution and its control for opencast projects. To start with, a detailed literature survey was carried out in the area of noise pollution and its control in the mining industry, embracing equipment like from Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM), compressors, workshops, pneumatic drills, processing plants etc, to know the quantum of work done in and worldwide. The various aspects studied In this project were the daily noise dose and/or noise exposure level of the operators of various types of heavy earth moving machinery and its assessment, noise characteristics at different operating conditions of the machine, analysis of noise coming out from different parts of the machine, analysis of noise at different distances from the machine for different frequency components and the most important one i.e., impact of periodic maintenance on the noise characteristics of machines and to find out with which maintenance schedule there is maximum fluctuation in the noise level and to evolve a technique for attenuating the noise generated from these machines as well as to reduce the operator's exposure to high noise levels. This paper highlights the results of this research project.(Multi-Science Publishing Co. The major problem encountered in this type of mining are related to ground control. These ground control problems are mainly due to the pillar load transfer. The pillar load transfer mainly depends on the physical characteristics of the parting material between the seams and also its thickness. There are various parameters affecting the multiple seam working. Broadly these parameters are classified into two i.e. fixed parameters and mine design parameters.' Fixed parameters are seam thickness, depth of seam, parting thickness, physical characteristics of the parting, geology of the seam, etc. Mine design parameters are sequence of working of the seam, method of working, pillar size, type of supports used, etc. Most of the coal reserve in India is locked up in multi-seams. This paper discusses the various research work carried out in India as well as abroad, related to ground control problems associated with multi-seam mining.Item Applications of computer in mining industry with special regard to shovel-dumper productivity(2007) Mangalpady, M.; Murthy, Ch.S.N.; Pai, R.; Nand, R.Now-a-days computer is used in every field of engineering, including mining industry, at various stages in various capacities. One of the major problems in surface mining is material handling, which involves transportation of both ore and overburden. Most of the projects make use of shoveldumper system in spite of its huge capital investment and recurring costs. Hence a lot of mind and time has to be devoted before its procurement so as to optimize their number and maximize its utility. This paper addresses various optimization models available for productivity analysis of shovel-dumper fleet. Match factor method is one of the commonly used techniques to know the relative coverage which shovels are getting from truck fleet. Operations research techniques like queuing theory, integer programming, simulation and goal programming consider the probabilistic nature associated with the system. Even though many models are available for optimization and analyzing the productivity of shovel dumper system, further research and study is needed to devise a desirable technique for the same.Item Optimization of shovel-dumper system in surface mines by using match factor method(2009) Mangalpady, M.Computers have brought a revolution in almost every realm of life and become an indispensable part of human activities. Mining industry is no such exception. One of the major problems in surface mining is materials handling, which involves transportation of both ore and overburden. Most of the projects make use of shovel-dumper system due to its high degree of flexibility. This paper addresses application of match factor method for optimization of shovel-dumper fleet in surface mine projects. A surface iron ore mine was simulated using the computer model developed and the match factor was calculated for existing system. To make match factor unity compared to existing match factor of 0.43, it was found that the number of dumpers would have to be increased to 54, in addition to existing trucks. The model attempts to quantify the apparent balance between the number of loading devices and the number of haulage equipment needed.Item A comparison of limit equilibrium method of slope stability analysis with finite element modelling(2009) Mangalpady, M.Stability analysis of slopes susceptible to different types of failures can be performed with different techniques. The selection of an appropriate technique is, therefore, very important in a process of slope stability evaluation. In this paper, slopes of a large surface iron ore mine was analyzed by limit equilibrium method and by finite element modelling. GALENA software was used for analysis by limit equilibrium method and ANSYS for finite element modelling (FEM). Factor of safety (FOS) was calculated by both the methods and they are compared for their applicability. Based on the results obtained by the analysis, conclusions were drawn on the application of these methods. It was found that FEM analysis gives factor of safety value which is found to be lesser than the values determined by limit equilibrium method. This is because it considers more parameters and performs a detailed analysis of stress and strain conditions in the strata under consideration.Item A comprehensive assessment of increased iron ore production on the environment - A case study(2011) Thimmaiah, S.A.; Rao, Y.; Murthy, C.H.S.N.There has been a significant increase in iron ore production in the Bellary- Hospet-Sandur sector of Karnataka, India due to sudden increase in the demand of iron ore from other countries as well as by local steel plants set up in the region. An attempt has been made in this paper to study the effect of increase in the iron ore production on various environmental parameters like air, water, soil and noise. For this purpose a study area of 10 Km radius was taken and the various environmental parameters were monitored before and after increase in iron ore production in the region. Study shows that there is no significant change in the air quality in terms of SPM, RPM, SO2 and NOx in the region. In many locations, there is decrease in the concentrations of these parameters. This is mainly due to improvement of roads by asphalting, effective covering of iron ore trucks by tarpaulin, awareness among mine owners about the protection of environment by following various pollution control measures, dust suppression measures on the public road using water sprinklers and stringent monitoring of the environmental protective measures by various regulatory authorities. The concentration of SO2 and NOx was found to increase due to increase in traffic by movement of tippers in the public/village road. The deployment of heavy earth moving machinery at mine site also contributed for increase of SO2 and NOx. The surface water quality parameters were found to be within the acceptable limits in the study area. There is no possibility of disturbing/altering ground water table due to mining operations as the mining is being carried out on hill top which is above the general ground level. In agricultural soil, except that of potassium and electrical conductivity, variations in other parameters are insignificant as the agricultural lands are located 2 to 3 Kms away from the active mining area. Increase in noise level is found at most of the locations of the study area. Therefore, serious attempts should be made by mine owners as well as statutory bodies to reduce the sound level at various locations for increasing the quality of life in these locations in terms of sound level. © 2011 CAFET-INNOVA technical society.
