Item Synchrophasor Measurement Standard Comparison and Testing of an FF-based PMU(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2020) Aalam, M.K.; Shubhanga, K.N.Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are an integral part of Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS). The PMU algorithms need to be tested before they are utilized for monitoring, control and protection applications. In this context, understanding the test procedures suggested by the IEEE standard for synchrophasor measurement is very essential. This paper looks into the standards, with emphasis on the differences between the 2011 version and the 2014 update. In this paper, the IEEE standard based test procedures are listed and detailed in such a way that they can be readily applied to test any PMU algorithm for compliance verification. The steady-state and dynamic tests given in the standard are performed, using the Fourier Filter (FF) algorithm and results are compared with the permissible limits. Finally the performance of the FF is verified using realistic signals obtained from a 4-machine 10-bus system during fault conditions. © 2020 IEEE.Item Case Studies of Event Detection for Indian Power System using Signal Processing Methods(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2021) Johnson, T.; Pathak, A.; Arya, S.A.; Dahanuwala, S.D.; Gachhi, P.; Moger, T.With the deployment of phasor measurement units (PMU) and wide area measurement system (WAMS), it is feasible to have an insight into the real-time events occurring in power systems based on measured PMU data. Any critical disturbance occurring in a power system is noted as an Event. The analysis carried out in this paper are based on PMU data inferences derived using various signal processing methods like Fast Fourier Transform, Yule-Walker Spectral Analysis, Matrix Pencil and Min-Max. The results of each of these methods have been described and an intersection of results from two or more methods are finally identified as Events. The results have been compiled on two different data sets: one for the Northern Region of Indian Power Grid and another for entire Indian power system. The data with respect to Northern Region was collected on 20th May 2020, during the cyclone Amphan, which caused many disruptions in electric power network. The second data was gathered from 30 stations all over India during an electromechanical oscillation fault. © 2021 IEEE.Item A Comparative Study of Bayesian based filters for Dynamic State Estimation in Power Systems(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2021) Banu, S.; Johnson, T.; Moger, T.Dynamic state estimation of a power system is the first prerequisite for control and stability prediction under transient conditions. Among the states of synchronous machine, precise, accurate, and timely information about rotor angle and speed deviation can be useful to enhance power system reliability and stability. In this paper, the popular variants of Kalman filter are used to estimate the main states of synchronous generators of an SMIB and IEEE 3-generators 9-bus test systems. A case study using a simple power system model is presented to illustrate the comparison between effectiveness of proposed approaches. © 2021 IEEE.Item Taxonomy of Fault Analysis Methods for Protection of Transmission Lines(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2024) Balimidi, M.; Gopakumar, G.; Kishan, K.Transmission lines are bridging elements between the generation and load centre. Thus, any disturbance to it results in an unreliable electric supply to the consumers and also degrades equipment's life. It will be more severe if this prevails in complex power grids. Therefore, this inevitable condition should be sensed early to take necessary protection and control actions. This paper presents a taxonomy of fault analysis methodologies of transmission lines. This paper will be a good reference on the state of art fault analysis methods for the researchers, the academicians, and the power system engineers. © 2024 IEEE.Item Application of Wide-Area Power System Stabilizer for Damping of Inter-area Oscillations(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2025) Navaneeth, K.; Kotian, S.M.Inter-area oscillations (IAO) are a main concern for the stability of power systems. Conventional controllers used for IAO damping depend on local signals. Damping provided by such controllers is sometimes insufficient, as the controller does not have enough information of the inter-area modes from local signals. With extensive research and development in the field of wide-area measurement system (WAMS), signals from remote points of the system can be obtained and utilized along with local signals, thereby providing better damping for the inter-area modes. This brings with it its own set of challenges, from choosing the appropriate remote signal to be utilized to time delays due to measurement and transmission delays of the communication network. In this paper, a summary of the various works that have been carried out by researchers, pertaining to development of wide-area control (WAC) for various power system devices, mainly wide-area power system stabilizer (PSS) for synchronous generators is discussed. The wide-area PSS is used in a two-area, four-machine power system, and it’s effectiveness in damping out IAO is demonstrated. Eigenvalue analysis is carried out. Time-domain simulations are used to validate the eigen-inferences. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
