Item Modelling and simulation of a wind/diesel hybrid power system(2006) Kini, A.S.; Yaragatti, U.R.In remote and isolated areas far from the grid, it may not be an economically viable option to supply electric power from the grid. This is due to the high cost of transmission lines and higher transmission losses that accompany distribution of centrally generated power to remote areas. In such cases hybrid systems such as wind/diesel generators are found to be the most reliable, preferred and attractive alternative source of power supply. This paper presents the modelling and performance analysis of wind/diesel hybrid generating system. To regulate the frequency and voltage output of the wind generator, an AC-DC-AC scheme using SPWM technique is employed. To evaluate the performance and stability of the hybrid system, it is simulated for different disturbances involving variation in wind speed and load conditions using EMTDC/PSCAD software.Item Modelling and performance analysis of a wind/diesel hybrid power system(2006) Kini, A.S.; Yaragatti, U.R.Domestic consumers in the remote places who are not connected by the main electrical grid network, hybrid systems such as wind/diesel generators have been considered as the most reliable, preferred and attractive alternative source of power supply. This paper presents the modeling and performance analysis of wind/diesel hybrid generating system. To regulate the frequency and voltage output of the wind generator, an AC-DC-AC scheme using SPWM technique is employed. The system is simulated for different wind speed and load conditions using EMTDC/PSCAD software. © 2006 IEEE.Item Development of adaptive distance relay for STATCOM connected transmission line(2011) Sham, M.V.; Chethan, K.S.; Vittal, K.P.Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices are inserted into power grids in series, in shunt, and in some cases, both in shunt and series for the improved power transmission capability. They also improve the controllability, stability and power quality of the power system. Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is a shunt type FACTS device connected at the midpoint of the transmission line to maintain the voltage at desired level by injecting/absorbing the reactive power. These devices have fast dynamic response time, which overlap with the response time of the line protection distance relays. This interaction affects the performance of distance protection relay during line faults. In this paper the design and development of a new adaptive distance relaying scheme to mitigate the adverse effects of the STATCOM is presented. A 100MVA 48 pulse STATCOM with associated control system, connected at the midpoint of a typical 400KV transmission system is selected for simulation. The line faults of different types at various locations of the line are simulated using EMTDC/PSCAD ® and the performance of newly developed adaptive distance protection scheme has been evaluated and efficacy of the proposed scheme is illustrated. © 2011 IEEE.Item Modelling and simulation studies of inter-winding faults in a three phase distribution transformer using EMTDC/PSCAD(2013) Shruthi, B.S.; Vittal, K.P.Distribution Transformer is one of the most important equipment in the power system. Among the various faults, internal winding faults comprise about seventy to eighty percent of modern transformer breakdowns and this is likely to increase since loading transformers to their optimum capacity is becoming normal practice. This paper discusses the modelling of turn to ground and turn to turn faults in PSCAD®/EMTDC™. Transformers generally employ differential relays as optimal protection. Internal faults involving a few turns might not suffice for fault detection hence proving the otherwise dependable relay, unreliable. Thus the model developed here will aid in investigating such protection aspects of transformers. Simulation results considering a sample system are presented. © 2013 IEEE.
