Item On line fault detection and an adaptive algorithm to fast distance relaying(2008) Srivani Iyengar, S.G.; Vittal, K.This paper presents the design of an hybrid scheme of wavelet transforms and an adaptive Fourier filtering technique for on line fault detection and phasor estimation to fast distance protection of transmission lines. The wavelet transform is used as a signal processing tool. The sampled voltage and current signals at the relay location are decomposed using wavelet transform- Multi Resolution Analysis (MRA). The decomposed signals are used for the fault detection and as input to the phasor estimation algorithm. The phasor estimation algorithm possesses the advantage of recursive computing and a decaying dc offset component is removed from fault signals by using an adaptive compensation method. Fault detection index and a variable data window scheme are embedded in the algorithm. The proposed scheme provides capability for fast tripping decision, taking accuracy into account. Extensive simulation tests and comparative evaluation presented prove the efficacy of the proposed scheme in distance protection. © 2008 IEEE.Item Development of three zone quadrilateral adaptive distance relay for the protection of parallel transmission line(2009) Srivani Iyengar, S.G.; Panduranga, V.K.; Atla, C.R.This paper describes the development of adaptive distance relay for the protection of parallel transmission line with mutual coupling. The quadrilateral trip characteristic with directionality feature is developed for three zone protection. The relay automatically adjusts its operation based on the availability of the input signals. Zero sequence current, if available from the parallel transmission line, is used to fully compensate the mutual coupling effect. When the parallel line's zero sequence current is not available, the line operating status is used to select the proper zero sequence current compensation factor in impedance calculation. If both the signals mentioned above are not available, default compensation factor is used. The performance of adaptive relay is tested through steady state and dynamic test. The comparative evaluation of test results presented shows the efficacy of the proposed adaptive distance relay over the conventional distance relay.Item Adaptive distance relaying scheme in series compensated transmission lines(2010) Srivani Iyengar, S.G.; Vittal, K.P.The introduction of the capacitance in series with the line reactance adds certain complexities to the effective application of impedance based distance relays. The paper reviews series compensated line protection challenges and proposes the state of art relay with an integrated scheme in harmony with the present power system scenarios Development of the proposed scheme is in the specific area of incorporating the adaptive features like adaptive Relay setting as the compensation level changes in the series compensated lines of the transmission system for optimum reliability. Upon extensive testing on different data set of fault cases with fault resistance and varying percentage compensation level, performance of the developed method ensures that the proposed scheme overcomes the overreach / underreach problem of the distance relay in series compensated lines and is found to be quite promising.
