The mechanical performance of the composite cross arm has been evaluated using experimental testing and an analytical solution as well as a finite element simulation. By using the composite cross arm in place of a steel cross arm with ceramic insulators, considerable reduction of transmission corridor is achieved. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.Ceramic insulatorsCross armExperimental testingFinite element simulationsMechanical performancePultruded profilesPultruded sectionsTransmission corridorTransmission line towersTransmission line theoryElectric linesAnalysis and experimental testing of a built-up composite cross arm in a transmission line tower for mechanical performance
