The undertaken work shows the efficacy of Pterocarpus marsupium stem extract (PMSE) as an eco-friendly green inhibitor to mitigate the deterioration of mild steel (MS) in various concentrations of hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution using an electrochemical technique. The experiments were conducted by considering acid concentration, inhibition concentration and temperature as the parameters to optimize the inhibition efficiency. The corrosion inhibition of PMSE predominantly owing to protective film formation on the metal surface and is confirmed by surface morphological and FTIR spectral studies. RSM studies using the Taguchi method revealed the highest inhibition efficiency to be predicted at minimum temperature and acid concentration and at the maximum inhibitor concentration as obtained in the experiments. The obtained experimental and statistical study proves PMSE as a potential green corrosion inhibitor for the corrosion inhibition of MS owing to their active constituents and eco-friendliness. © 2023 Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
