Abstract

In this paper, rotor stability performance details of a grid connected type-1 wind turbine generator (WTG) system are presented. Small-signal and transient stability analyses are carried out including the models of the turbine-generator shaft system to show that the torsional modes natural to the shaft system gets excited only when the system exhibits rotor speed instability. This observation will be very useful when analyzing the subsynchronous resonance performance of wind turbine systems connected to a series capacitor compensated transmission system. Further, it is demonstrated that an active stall control offers a way to improve large disturbance stability of the system. 2015 IEEE.
