    Surface hardening of high-strength low alloy steels (HSLA) dual-phase steels by ball burnishing using factorial design

    Burnishing is used increasingly as a finishing operation which gives additional advantages such as increased hardness, fatigue strength, and wear resistance. Experimental work based on 34 factorial design was carried out to establish the effects of ball burnishing parameters on the surface hardness of high-strength low alloy steels (HSLA) dual-phase (DP) steel specimens. Statistical analysis of the results shows that the speed, feed, lubricant and ball diameter have significant effect on surface hardness.

    Investigations on the effect of ball burnishing parameters on surface hardness and wear resistance of HSLA dual-phase steels

    Surface finish has a vital influence on most functional properties of a component like fatigue life, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, etc. This has given birth to processes such as lapping, honing, burnishing, etc. Burnishing is a fine finishing operation involving the cold working plastic deformation of surface layers to enhance the surface integrity and the functional utility of a component. The present study has been carried out to establish the effect of burnishing parameters viz. feed rate, speed, force, ball diameter and lubricant on surface hardness, and wear resistance of HSLA dual-phase steel specimens. The result indicates that burnishing parameters have significant effect on the surface hardness and wear resistance.

    Study of wear behaviour of austempered ductile iron

    An investigation was carried out to examine the influence of austempering temperature on microstructural parameters and the wear behaviour of austempered ductile iron. Ductile iron was austenitised at 900 °C for 30 min and austempered for 2 h at 260, 280, 300, 320, 350, 380 and 400 °C. Resulting microstructures were characterised through optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Wear test was carried out using a pin-on-disc machine with sliding speed of 289 m min-1. Coarse ausferrite microstructure exhibited higher wear rate than fine ausferrite microstructure. At high austempering temperature large amounts of austenite was instrumental in improving the wear resistance through formation of deformation induced martensite. Study of the wear surface under scanning electron microscope showed that, under dry sliding condition, wear occurred mainly due to adhesion and delamination. Wear rate was found to be dependent on the yield strength, austenite content and its carbon content. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

    Study of wear behaviour of ductile iron subjected to two step austempering

    An investigation was carried out to examine the influence of two step austempering on microstructural parameters and the wear behaviour of austempered ductile iron. Ductile iron was austenitised at 900 °C for 30 min, and then austempered successively at two different temperatures. It was first austempered at 300 °C for different durations from 2 min to 30 min and subsequently austempered at 400°C for 2 h, after which it was quenched to room temperature. Resulting microstructures were characterised through optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Mechanical properties were studied through hardness measurement and tensile testing. Wear studies were carried out using a pin-on-disc machine. Wear rate was found to decrease with increasing time at the first step temperature of 300 °C. At short austempering times at 300 °C, the amount of austenite was instrumental in improving the wear resistance through formation of deformation induced martensite. Wear rate was found to depend on yield strength, austenite content and its carbon content. © Carl Hanser Verlag GmbH & Co. KG.

    Abrasive wear behavior of granite-filled glass-epoxy composites by SiC particles using statistical analysis

    This experimental investigation deals with the evaluation of abrasive wear behavior of Glass Epoxy (G-E) composites on pin-ondisc test rig. A plan of experiments, based on the Taguchi Design of Experiments, was performed to acquire data in controlled way. An orthogonal array and the analysis of variance were employed to investigate the percentage of contribution of various process parameters like sliding speed, applied load, sliding distance and their interactions affecting the abrasive wear volume loss of composites. The correlations between the various factors affecting the abrasive wear behavior of composites were obtained by using multiple linear regression equations. The obtained results indicate that applied load and sliding distance were the wear factors that have the highest physical as well as statistical influence on the abrasive wear behavior of both filled and unfilled G-E composites. A good agreement between the predicted and actual wear resistance was observed within±12%. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    The fabrication, characterization and electrochemical corrosion behavior of Zn-TiO2 composite coatings

    Metal-nanoparticle composite coatings improve the hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance properties of metal coatings. In this work, TiO 2 nanoparticles were chosen as second-phase particles to generate anticorrosive Zn composite coatings. The TiO2 nanoparticles were dispersed in a Zn plating solution to co-deposit them with Zn. The Zn-TiO 2 composite coatings were then characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray diffraction methods. The presence of TiO2 particles in the composite was confirmed by SEM images and EDS spectra. The Zn-TiO2 composite coatings incorporated with different amounts of TiO2 particles were tested for corrosion performance by polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the dissolution behavior of the coatings that had been immersed in corrosive media for a long time was studied. Improved corrosion resistance properties of the Zn-TiO2 composite coatings were confirmed by polarization studies, fitted Nyquist plots, an increase in phase angle and a shift in the Rct characteristic peak of the Bode plot. © 2011 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

    The effect of the addition of strontium and cerium modifiers on microstructure and mechanical properties of hypereutectic Al-Si (LM30) alloy

    The present work deals with the melt treatment of LM30 hypereutectic Al-Si alloy using cerium and strontium and the assessment of its effect on microstructure and properties of the alloy. The addition of cerium simultaneously modified both primary and eutectic silicon, leading to an increase in ultimate tensile strength, as well as the wear resistance of the alloy. It was found that the coefficient of thermal expansion of the alloy decreased on modification of the microstructure. © 2013 by ASTM International.

    Influence of nano-aluminum-hydroxide on tribological, mechanical and flammability properties of E-glass fabric/epoxy multi-layered laminates

    E-glass fabric/nano aluminum hydroxide (ATH)/epoxy composites were prepared by manual lay-up and compression molding. An image processing tool was used to quantify fineness of dispersion of nano-ATH particles in epoxy. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to understand the interaction between nano-ATH and epoxy. Mechanical properties, sliding wear resistance and fire retardance of these composites improved upon addition of nano-ATH. The composite containing 0.125 wt% of nano-ATH exhibited optimum mechanical properties and low specific wear rate.

    The influence of the addition of 4.5 wt.% of copper on wear properties of Al-12Si eutectic alloy

    The influence of 4.5 wt.% copper addition on wear behavior of as-cast Al-12Si alloy prepared by gravity casting is investigated in dry sliding against a steel counterface using a pin-on-disk apparatus. The microstructures of test alloys and worn surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersing X-ray spectroscopy. The addition of copper to the binary Al-12Si alloy led to the precipitation of CuAl2 phase. Copper addition resulted in a refinement of ?-Al and a minor modification of eutectic Si. The Al-12Si-4.5Cu alloy showed a higher wear resistance as compared to Al-12Si binary eutectic alloy. © 2015 Jordan Journal of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. All rights reserved.
