Item In this paper, block based texture segmentation is proposed based on contourlets and the hidden Markov model (HMM). Hidden Markov model is combined with hidden Markov tree (HMT) to form HMM-HMT model that models global dependency between the blocks in addition to the local statistics within a block. The HMM-HMT model is modified to use the contourlet transform, a new extension to the wavelet transform that forms a true basis for image representations. The maximum likelihood multiresolution segmentation algorithm is used to handle several block sizes at once. Since the algorithm works on the contourlet transformed image data, it can directly segment images without the need for transforming into the space domain. The experimental results demonstrate the competitive performance of the algorithm on contourlets with that of the other methods and excellent visual performance at small block sizes. The performance is comparable with that of wavelets and is superior at small block sizes. © Springer-Verlag 2004.(Springer Verlag, Contourlet based multiresolution texture segmentation using contextual hidden markov models) Raghavendra, B.S.; Subbanna Bhat, P.2004Item The microstructure of a solidifying lead free Sn-3.5Ag solder alloy is found to be highly sensitive to the surface condition of the copper substrate. A transition from lamellar to fine fibrous eutectic structure is observed as the surface condition of the substrate is altered by increasing the surface roughness and application of flux. This is attributed to lowering of interfacial tension and improved wetting of the solidifying solder on the substrate material leading to a better contact at the metal/substrate interface. The results also indicated the importance of surface texture of the substrate and the application of the flux to the quality of the solder/substrate joint. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Both solders exhibited good wettability on copper substrates having rough surface and lower wettabilty on smooth surfaces. The contact angles of solders decreased linearly with increase in surface roughness of the substrate. The exponential power law, ?=exp(-K ?n), was used to model the relaxation behaviour of solders. A high intermetallic growth was observed at the interface particularly on copper substrates with rough surface texture. A thin continuous interface showing scallop intermetallic compounds (IMC) was obtained on smooth surfaces. With an increase in surface roughness, the IMC morphology changed from scallop shaped to needle type at the Sn-2.625Ag-2.25Zn solder/substrate interface and nodular to plate like IMCs for Sn-1.75Ag-4.5Zn solder matrix. The microstructural aspect of cast A356 alloy employed in the present study is strongly dependent on the grain refinement (Ti and B) and modification (Sr). The mechanical properties such as PS, UTS, %E, %R, YM and VHN have been investigated. This paper deals with the combined effect of grain refinement and modification, which improves the overall mechanical properties of the alloy. It is also a well-known fact that the mechanical properties of cast A356 alloy were improved by subjecting suitable melt treatment such as grain refinement, modification and mould vibration, etc. The quality of castings and their properties can be achieved by refining of ?-Al dendrites in A356 alloy by means of the addition of elements such as Ti and B which reduces the size of a-Al dendrites, which otherwise solidifies with coarse columnar a-Al dendritic structure. In addition, modification is normally adopted to achieve improved mechanical properties. Metallographic studies reveal that the structure changes from coarse columnar dendrites to fine equiaxed ones on the addition of grain refiner and further, plate like eutectic silicon to fine particles on addition of 0.20% of Al-10Sr modifier. The present result shows that a reduction in the size of a-Al dendrites, modification of eutectic Si and improvement in the mechanical properties were observed with the addition of grain refiner Al-3Ti, Al-3B and modifier Al-10Sr either individual addition or in combination. The change in the microstructure from coarse columnar ?-Al dendrites to fine equiaxed dendrites and plate like eutectic silicon to rounded particles leads to improved mechanical properties. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2010.Item Effect of temperature and substrate surface texture on wettability and morphology of IMCs between Sn-0.7Cu solder alloy and copper substrate(2012) Satyanarayan, S.; Prabhu, K.N.In the present work, the effect of soldering temperature (270 and 298 °C) and substrate surface texture (0.02 and 1.12 ?m) on wetting characteristics and morphology of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) between Sn-0.7Cu lead-free solder on copper substrates was investigated. It was found that increase in temperature and substrate surface roughness improved the wettability of solder alloy. However, the effect of surface roughness on wettability was significant as compared to that of temperature. The spreading of solder alloy was uniform on smooth substrate, whereas spreading of the alloy on rough substrate resulted in an oval shape. The morphology of IMCs transformed from long needle shaped to short and thick protrusions of IMCs with increase in surface roughness of the substrate. Needle shaped and thick protruded intermetallics formed at the solder/Cu interface were identified as Cu 6Sn 5 compounds. The formation of Cu 3Sn IMC was observed only for the spreading of solder alloy at 298 °C which contributed to improvement in the wettability of solder alloy on both smooth and rough substrate surfaces. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2012.Item Nano-ZnO particle addition to monolithic magnesium for enhanced tensile and compressive response(Elsevier Ltd, 2014) Seetharaman, S.; Nayak, U.; Sabat, R.K.; Suwas, S.; Almajid, A.; Gupta, M.In this study, the effects of nanoscale ZnO reinforcement on the room temperature tensile and compressive response of monolithic Mg were studied. Experimental observations indicated strength properties improvement due to nanoscale ZnO addition. A maximum increment in tensile yield strength by ?55% and compressive yield strength by 90% (with reduced tension-compression asymmetry) was achieved when 0.8 vol.% ZnO nanoparticles were added to Mg. While the fracture strain values under tensile loads were found to increase significantly (by ?95%, in case of Mg-0.48ZnO), it remained largely unaffected under compressive loads. The microstructural characteristics studied in order to comprehend the mechanical response showed significant grain refinement due to grain boundary pinning effect of nano-ZnO particles which resulted in strengthening of Mg. Texture analysis using X-ray and EBSD methods indicated weakening of basal fibre texture in Mg/ZnO nanocomposites which contributed towards the reduction in tension-compression yield asymmetry and enhancement in tensile ductility when compared to pure Mg. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Thus, to avoid human errors in brain tumor diagnosis, this paper presents an automatic and accurate computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system based on ensemble classifier for the characterization of brain tumors on MR images as benign or malignant. Brain tumor tissue was automatically extracted from MR images by the proposed segmentation technique. A tumor is represented by extracting its texture, shape, and boundary features. The most significant features are selected by using information gain-based feature ranking and independent component analysis techniques. Next, these features are used to train the ensemble classifier consisting of support vector machine, artificial neural network, and k-nearest neighbor classifiers to characterize the tumor. Experiments were carried out on a dataset consisting of T1-weighted post-contrast and T2-weighted MR images of 550 patients. The developed CAD system was tested using the leave-one-out method. The experimental results showed that the proposed segmentation technique achieves good agreement with the gold standard and the ensemble classifier is highly effective in the diagnosis of brain tumor with an accuracy of 99.09 % (sensitivity 100 % and specificity 98.21 %). Thus, the proposed system can assist radiologists in an accurate diagnosis of brain tumors. © 2013, Springer-Verlag London.Item Image Restoration Using Adaptive Region-Wise p-Norm Filter with Local Constraints(World Scientific, 2016) Bini, A.A.; Padikkal, P.In this work, we introduce a feature adaptive second-order p-norm filter with local constraints for image restoration and texture preservation. The p-norm value of the filter is chosen adaptively between 1 and 2 in a local region based on the regional image characteristics. The filter behaves like a mean curvature motion (MCM) [A. Marquina and S. Osher, SIAM Journal of Scientific Computing 22, 387-405 (2000)] in the regions where the p-norm value is 1 and switches to a Laplacian filter in the rest of the regions (where the p-norm value is 2). The proposed study considerably reduces stair-case effect and effectively removes noise from images while deblurring them. The noise is assumed as Gaussian distributed (with zero mean and variance ?2) and blur is linearly shift invariant (out-of-focus). The filter converges at a faster rate with semi-implicit Crank-Nicholson scheme. The regularization parameter is initialized and updated based on the local image features and therefore this filter preserves edges, structures, textures and fine details present in images very well. The method is applied on different kinds of images with different image characteristics. We show the response of the filter to various kinds of images and numerically quantify the performance in terms of standard statistical measures. © 2016 World Scientific Publishing Company.Item Microstructure and mechanical properties of ZA27 based SiC reinforced composite processed by multi directional forging(Institute of Physics Publishing helen.craven@iop.org, 2018) Anjan, B.N.; Preetham Kumar, G.V.P.Influence of multi directional forging (MDF) on microstructural and mechanical properties of ZA27/SiC 5 weight percentage (Wt%) composites were investigated. Stir casting technique followed by squeezing process was adopted for synthesis of composite. MDF process was conducted at 100 °C and 200 °C upto strain of 0.54 and 1.09 respectively. Microstructure analysis was carried out using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. SiC particles were fairly distributed and some clusters were also observed. Density of composite decreased with the reinforcement of SiC particles as compared with ZA27 alloy, however porosity which was existing as casting defect was reduced by MDF process. Average grain size of 200-250 nm and 1 ?m was achieved for MDF processed sample at 100 °C upto 3 passes and at 200 °C upto 6 passes respectively. Addition of SiC particles and adoption of MDF technique improved the vickers hardness of composites. Ultimate tensile strength of ZA/SiC composite has increased from 380 MPa to 395 and 432 MPa respectively with 54 and 37 percentage of elongation to failure. Improvement in hardness and tensile strength is due to strain hardening and grain refinement. Ductility of MDF processed ZA27/SiC composite is attributed to uniform distribution of ultrafine equiaxed grain and micro constituents. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.
