Item Z-scan and degenerate four wave mixing studies on newly synthesized copolymers containing alternating substituted thiophene and 1,3,4-oxadiazole units(2006) Kiran, A.J.; Udayakumar, D.; Chandrasekharan, K.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.; Shashikala, H.D.The third-order nonlinear optical properties of newly synthesized copolymers containing alternating substituted thiophene and 1,3,4-oxadiazole units have been studied in DMF solution at 532 nm by using single beam Z-scan and degenerate four wave mixing techniques with nanosecond laser pulses. The variation of nonlinear response among the copolymers clearly indicates the dependence of ?(3) on donor and acceptor type of units present in the copolymers. The nonlinear refractive index, n2, of the investigated copolymers is found to be negative and the magnitude is as high as 10-10 esu. All samples exhibit strong reverse saturation absorption at the wavelength used and show good optical limiting of nanosecond pulses. The concentration dependence of n2 and the two-photon absorption coefficient (?) has been studied. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.Item Nonlinear optical studies of a newly synthesized copolymer containing oxadiazole and substituted thiophenes(2007) John Kiran, A.; Udayakumar, D.; Chandrasekharan, K.; Ahdikari, A.V.; Shashikala, H.D.; Philip, R.We investigated the third-order nonlinear optical properties of a newly synthesized soluble copolymer containing oxadiazole and thiophene units using Z-scan and Degenerate Four Wave Mixing (DFWM) techniques. The measurements were performed at 532 nm with 7 ns pulses from a Nd:YAG laser. We found a good agreement between the values of ?(3) determined from both experiments. Z-scan results indicate a negative nonlinear refractive index, n2, whose magnitude is of the order of 10-10 esu. The copolymer exhibits strong nonlinear absorption and good optical limiting properties at 532 nm, and hence may be a potential material for optical limiting applications. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.Item Continuous operation of fluidized bed bioreactor for biogenic sulfide oxidation using immobilized cells of Thiobacillus sp(Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2007) Ravichandra, P.; Mugeraya, G.; Anupoju, G.R.; Ramakrishna, M.; Jetty, A.In the present study, obligate autotrophic Thiobacillus sp. was isolated from aerobic sludge distillery effluent treatment plant and the experiments were conducted in a fluidized bed bioreactor for the biological oxidation of sulfide using Ca-alginate immobilized Thiobacillus sp. All the experiments were conducted in continuous mode at different sulfide loading rates 0.018, 0.02475, 0.03375, 0.03825 and 0.054 and different hydraulic retention times 5, 3.67, 2.67, 2.35 and 1.67 h by varying flow rates 2.4×10-4, 3.3×10-4, 4.5×10-4, 5.1 × 10-4 and 7.2×10-4. Sulfide conversions higher than 90% were obtained at almost all sulfide loading rates and hydraulic retention times. All the experiments were conducted at constant pH of around 6 and temperature of 30±5°C. © 2007 Asian Network for Scientific Information.Item Biological sulfide oxidation using autotrophic Thiobacillus sp.: Evaluation of different immobilization methods and bioreactors(2009) Ravichandra, P.; Gopal, M.; Jetty, A.Aims: Evaluation of various immobilization methods and bioreactors for sulfide oxidation using Thiobacillus sp. was studied. Methods and Results: Ca-alginate, K-carrageenan and agar gel matrices (entrapment) and polyurethane foam and granular activated carbon (adsorption) efficacy was tested for the sulfide oxidation and biomass leakage using immobilized Thiobacillus sp. Maximum sulfide oxidation of 96% was achieved with alginate matrix followed by K-carrageenan (88%). Different parameters viz. alginate concentration (1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%), CaCl2 concentration (1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%), bead diameter (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm), and curing time (1, 3, 6, 12 and 18 h) were studied for optimal immobilization conditions. Repeated batch experiments were carried out to test reusability of Ca-alginate immobilized beads for sulfide oxidation in stirred tank reactor and fluidized bed reactor (FBR) at different sulfide concentrations. Conclusions: The results proved to be promising for sulfide oxidation using Ca-alginate gel matrix immobilized Thiobacillus sp. for better sulfide oxidation with less biomass leakage. Significance and Impact of the Study: Biological sulfide oxidation is gaining more importance because of its simple operation. Present investigations will help in successful design and operation of pilot and industrial level FBR for sulfide oxidation. © 2009 The Society for Applied Microbiology.Item Hydrogen Sulfide Removal in Biofilter: Evaluation of a new filter material by immobilization of thiobacillus sp(Walter de Gruyter GmbH peter.golla@degruyter.com, 2009) Potumarthi, R.; Anupoju, G.R.; Mugeraya, G.; Jetty, A.Different agricultural residue was evaluated as a biofilter material for the removal of Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) using Thiobacillus sp. A Combination of four different agricultural residues, viz., sugarcane bagasse, coconut coir pith, rice husk and saw dust were evaluated as biofilter material. From results, it was observed that filter material having composition of 2:4:2:2, 4:4:2:2 and 4:2:2:4 has resulted in retaining 70% moisture content at the end of 10 days. The biofilter was operated for 128 days in three phases by varying inlet H2S concentration from 321 to 2020 ppmv. Biofilter exhibited 100% removal efficiency (RE) at an inlet concentration of 570 ppmv, 99% RE at an inlet concentration of 1416 ppmv and 66% RE at a maximum inlet concentration of 2020 ppmv. The filter performance in terms of RE, dropped to 48% when the air was not humidified before sending to the filter, which has direct relation with the MC of the filter material. The RE recovered to 66% with recovery of moisture content (MC) to 57% upon subsequent re-introduction of the humidifier in to the circuit. The pH has dropped from 7.8 to 4.8 during the course of operation of the filter. H2S was effectively removed under different operating conditions using mixed agricultural residue as filter material. However humidification was most essential to maintain the required moisture content in the biofilter. SEM analysis has shown the good growth of Thiobacillus sp. in the filter bed and hence the new material proved to be good support for the immobilization of Thiobacillus sp. All rights reserved.Item Studies on third-order nonlinear optical properties and reverse saturable absorption in polythiophene/poly (methylmethacrylate) composites(Springer Verlag, 2009) Poornesh, P.; Umesh, G.; Hegde, P.K.; Manjunatha, M.G.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.We report here the studies on third-order nonlinear optical properties of two novel polythiophene composite films investigated using the Z-scan technique. The measurements were carried out using a Q-switched, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser producing 7 nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. Z-scan results reveal that the composite films exhibit self-defocusing nonlinearity. The real and imaginary parts of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility were of the order 10-12 esu. The effective excited-state absorption cross section was found to be larger than the ground state absorption cross section, indicating that the operating nonlinear mechanism is reverse saturable absorption (RSA). The polythiophene composite films also exhibit good optical power limiting of the nanosecond laser pulses. The nonlinear optical parameters are found to increase on increasing the strength of the electron-donor group, indicating the dependence of ? (3) on the electron-donor/acceptor units of polythiophenes. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.Item Design and synthesis of new donor-acceptor type conjugated copolymers derived from thiophenes(2009) Manjunatha, M.G.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.; Hegde, P.K.A new series of donor-acceptor type poly(thiophene) derivatives (P1-P3) were synthesized starting from thiodiglycolic acid and diethyl oxalate through multistep reactions. In the final step, the polymerization was carried out using Wittig reaction. This is a good synthetic route for the preparation of any desired p- and n-type copolymers. The optical and potential charge-transporting properties of the copolymers were investigated by UV-vis, fluorescence emission spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The copolymers exhibited bluish-green/green fluorescence in their thin film forms. Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that these copolymers have low-lying LUMO energy levels ranging from -2.98 to -3.11 eV and high lying HOMO energy levels ranging from -5.45 to -5.65 eV. The optical and electrochemical studies reveal that new copolymers are new promising materials for the development of efficient polymer light emitting diodes. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Item Modelling for organics and nutrients release during benthal sludge stabilisation part il - Nutrients(2009) Bhargava, D.S.; Shrihari, S.Settleable solids from untreated or partially treated domestic and industrial effluents undergoing stabilisation in stream beds contain significant amount or nutrients such as ammonia and phosphates apart from carbonaceous organic material. An experimental investigation was carried out to study the contribution of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and nutrients by this benthal-sludge undergoing stabillisation in steam beds. Sludge was collected from a sewage channel and placed at the bottom of an experimental reactor, and a continuous flow of clean tap water was maintained, in such a manner that the sludge was not disturbed. The first part of this work contained a discussion on degreadation of carbonaceous matter. The degradation of the nutrients, such as ammonia and phosphates being released from the sediments into the overlying waters at different flow rates of over laying waters is evaluated. It was noticed that the ammonia and phosphates released from the sediments into the overlying waters become more or less uniform after some days. The ammonia release and phosphate release were found to be affected by changes in the flowrates of overlying waters. The ammonia and phosphates remaining in the top and bottom layers of the sediments also showed similar trends. Predictive models have been presented for the variation of ammonia and phophate release into the overlying water, ammonia and phosphates remaining in the sediment layers at different times and different flow rates.Item The third-order nonlinear optical properties of novel styryl dyes(2009) Shettigar, S.; Umesh, G.; Poornesh, P.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Asiri, A.M.The third-order nonlinear optical properties of two novel styryl dyes, namely, 1,3-diethyl-5-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione and 5-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)-1,3-diethyl-2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione were studied using the Z-scan technique employing 7 ns laser pulses at 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption coefficient, magnitude of effective third-order susceptibility and coupling factor were determined. The optical power limiting behavior of the colorants was ascribed to two-photon absorption phenomenon. Nonlinear absorption cross-section increased with increase in ? electron density and the effective two-photon absorption cross-section was two orders of magnitude larger than those of commercially available azo compounds. The results suggest that these colorants offer promise as nonlinear optical materials for device applications. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Item 3,3?-Benzene-1,4-diylbis[1-(substituted)phenylprop-2-en-1-one] derivatives: A new class of materials for third-order nonlinear optical applications(2010) Poornesh, P.; Ravi, K.; Umesh, G.; Hegde, P.K.; Manjunatha, M.G.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.We have investigated the third-order nonlinear optical parameters of Bischalcones embedded in DMF solution and in solid PMMA matrix, by Z-scan technique using nanosecond laser pulse trains at 532 nm. Z-scan results reveal that the Bischalcones exhibits negative nonlinear refractive index as high as 10-11 esu. The molecular two-photon absorption cross-section ?2? of Bischalcones were of the order 10-46 cm4 s/photon, which is nearly two orders of magnitude larger than that of Rhodamine 6G which is 10-48 - 10-50 cm4 s/photon. We found that, the two-photon absorption (TPA) is the dominating nonlinear process leading to nonlinear absorption in both the cases in solution and as well as in solid medium. Based on TPA process, the Bischalcones exhibit good optical power limiting of nanosecond laser pulses at the input wavelength. The nonlinear optical parameters found to increase on enhancing the strength of the electron donor groups indicating the dependence and importance of electron donor/acceptor units on third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility ?(3). © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
