    Accurate Estimation for Stability of Slope and Partition Over Old Underground Coal Workings Using Regression-Based Algorithms

    Numerical modeling simulation has found to be best solution for predicting slope and partition stability over old underground coal workings. But it has taken huge time to complete a single simulation model. In this regard, machine learning-based framework is used to predict the stability of old galleries. A case study is taken up in opencast mine and simulation is carried out using numerical model and machine learning-based framework. Framework has shown an overall accuracy of 94–95% for different slope and partition stability. Framework shows a speedup of 2366 × against numerical simulator. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

    Geomorphological behaviour of Sasihithlu, Mangalore coast, west coast of India

    Beach geomorphological studies have been carried out with help of conventional methods and remote sensing techniques. Conventional methods include beach profile surveys and beachwidth measurements whereas remote sensing techniques involved in utilization of satellite images, digitization and analyses. Beach profile surveys and beachwidth measurements are carried out at monthly intervals over a period of one year (September 2009 to September 2010) to understand dynamics of sediment along the coastal segment of 7km at Sasihithlu, north off Mangalore coastline. Six locations are selected based on their significant site characteristics along the coastal segment. It is observed erosion with steeper slopes during the monsoon and simultaneously deposition with flat and wider exposed slopes during the fair weather season. But the more drastic and dramatic changes are observed in the vicinity of Mulki-Pavanje rivermouth, since the rivers Mulky and Pavanje bring any kind of sediments irrespective of seasons. Because of this the profiles alter dramatically in the vicinity of rivermouth. It is estimated that the Sasihithlu beach has experienced a net loss of about 2515m 3/m, a net gain of about 3525m 3/m and hence a gain of about 1010m 3/m sediments in an annual cycle. Addition to conventional methods, remote sensing analysis is also carried out to detect the influence of rivers and their flow on rivermouth system in recent decades (1988-2009) with the help of satellite images and GIS tools. It is observed that the shifting tendency of rivermouth either south or north irrespective of seasons. However a detailed investigation on shoreline pattern showed a clear indication of shifting shoreline towards south. Therefore present study suggests to construct coastal protection structures on either side of the rivermouth, through that the damage to the property could be minimized. © 2011 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY.     Stress analysis between tunnel and slope for single as well as multiple tunnel scenarios: A numerical modelling approach

    Nowadays, a wide accessible network requires a combination of tunnels and roads through highly undulating surfaces. This study aims to assess the stress due to surrounding slope on a tunnel using ANSYS software. A circular tunnel with varying distance between the tunnel and slope, and berm width has been used for the analysis. For multiple tunnel cases, distance between the tunnels was also varied for assessing stresses. In this study, maximum and minimum stresses were obtained for a berm width of 4 and 7 m respectively, which showed that stress decreases with an increase in berm width. For multiple tunnels cases, variations in distance between two tunnels provided significant insights in the analysis of stress between the slope and tunnel. © 2020, Indian Academy of Sciences.

    Integrated Slope Monitoring System for Slope Stability Over Old Underground Galleries During Surface Mining Operations Using Internet of Things

    Surface mining methods have been adopted to extract the coal which is in the form of pillars and roof in old underground coal workings. There are slope failures associated with the extraction method. Conventional slope monitoring systems are available but require physical presence of the person at the site and the readout units which are physically connected to the base units and generally such monitoring is done only during day light. Radar-based systems are being used to monitor the broad area through rain, dust, smoke and operate during both day and night. They provide accurate results, but they are high-cost and require a skilled person for operating in the field. Hence, an investigation taken up to assess the stability of the slope stability over old underground coal workings by using wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and internet of things (IoT). In this paper, monitoring of slope stability using a low cost wireless sensor networks is discussed. An integrated wireless data acquisition system is developed to assess the slope stability and it is validated with conventional instrument and numerical modeling approach. The variation in between integrated slope monitoring system (ISMS) to data logger and numerical modeling is around 3.03%–19%. Statistical analysis results revealed that there is a good correlation between field observations and modeling studies. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

    Static and dynamic performance of single batter piles embedded in slope

    The performance of pile foundations embedded in the sloping ground has received the least attention. Further, considering piles with batter angles, the investigation is even more limited. In this study, 3D non-linear finite element analyses were conducted to investigate the lateral load-carrying behaviour of vertical and batter (with angles -5°, +5°, -10° and +10°) pile foundations embedded in slope. Firstly, static analyses were performed, and the behaviour of the batter piles was compared with the vertical piles, considering the piles are embedded in a 30° slope of height 5.0 m with medium-stiff clay. It was observed that the capacity of piles reduces when they are installed on sloping ground. Negative batter piles were found to be more effective than the vertical piles in the slope. Next, the performances of the piles were investigated for dynamic lateral loading. It was inferred that the negative batter piles provide better resistance under lateral loading than the vertical and positive batter piles in sloping ground under dynamic loading as well. © Indian Academy of Sciences 2024.
