Item Bending strength of cenosphere foam cored jute/glass skin sandwiches(2004) Kulkarni, S.M.; Sandesh, S.; SharnappaSandwich construction is widely used in structural application because of its high bending stiffness coupled with lightweight. In design of sandwiches, skin made of high modulus of elasticity is used with core of high shear modulus. This balance is important so that neither material fails long before the other is stressed to accepted level. In the present study, experiments have been carried out on polymeric foam core sandwich beams with jute/epoxy faces. Syntactic polymeric foam cores, which have high compressive strength compared to open cell foams are made by mixing hollow fly-ash particles called cenospheres in a matrix material. The variable considered is the density of the core varied by differing the volume fraction of cenospheres. Cenospheres used in the present study are obtained from flyash, a waste byproduct of thermal power plants using a low cost separation process. Cores with four different volume fractions are prepared and sandwiched between a set of jute fabric layers. It is noticed that as volume fraction of cenospheres increased density is decreasing (1.12 to 0.98 g/cm3). The sandwich beams cut from the samples are tested using standard three-point bending procedure and the results obtained are compared with the results of glass skin sandwich with similar cores. Results showed a large difference in specific strengths of glass and jute skin sandwiches, which could be attributed to high tensile strength of glass fiber compared to jute fiber. There is a decrease of about 13% and 8% from the maximum specific strength for glass skin and jute skin sandwiches respectively at higher volume fractions of cenospheres. This could be traced to the failure of core well before the skin is stressed to accepted level in case of glass skin sandwiches. The jute skin sandwiches exhibited a little flatter specific strength response with respect to volume fraction of cenospheres indicating matching of the features pertaining to jute skin and the core properties. As the specific strength per unit cost of jute approaches that of glass, jute may be used to replace glass fiber with a significant cost advantage for less demanding applications.Item Analytical formulations and solutions to the static analysis of simply supported anti-symmetric angle-ply composite and sandwich plates hitherto not reported in the literature based on a higher-order refined theory already reported in the literature are presented. The theoretical model presented herein incorporates laminate deformations, which account for the effect of transverse shear deformation and a non-linear variation of in-plane displacements with respect to the thickness coordinate. The transverse displacement is assumed to be constant throughout the thickness. The equations of equilibrium are obtained using principle of minimum potential energy. Solutions are obtained in closed form using Navier's technique by solving the boundary value problem. Accuracy of the theoretical formulations and the solution method is first ascertained by comparing the results with that already reported in the literature. After establishing the accuracy of the solutions, numerical results with real properties are presented for the multilayer antisymmetric angle-ply composite and sandwich plates, which will serve as a benchmark for future investigations. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Five two-dimensional models available in the literature are used for the present evaluation. The performance of the various models is evaluated on a simply supported laminated plate under sinusoidal loading. The equations of equilibrium are derived using the principle of minimum potential energy (PMPE). Analytical solution method using double Fourier series approach is used in conjunction with the admissible boundary conditions. The accuracy of each model is established by comparing the results of composite plates with the exact solutions already available in the literature. After establishing the correctness of the theoretical formulations and the solution method, benchmark results for transverse displacement, in-plane stresses, moment and shear stress resultants are presented for the multilayer sandwich plates. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The theoretical model presented herein incorporates laminate deformations which account for the effects of transverse shear deformation, transverse normal strain/stress and a nonlinear variation of in-plane displacements with respect to the thickness coordinate thus modelling the warping of transverse cross sections more accurately and eliminating the need for shear correction coefficients. In addition, another higher order computational model with five degrees of freedom already available in the literature is also considered for comparison. The equations of motion are obtained using Hamilton's principle. Solutions are obtained in closed-form using Navier's technique by solving the eigenvalue equation. Plates with varying slenderness ratios, number of layers, degrees of anisotropy, edge ratios and thickness of core to thickness of face sheet ratios are considered for analysis. Numerical results with real properties using above two computational models are presented and compared for the free vibration analysis of multilayer antisymmetric angle-ply composite and sandwich plates, which will serve as a benchmark for future investigations. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The loss of strength in concrete is mainly attributed to decomposition of C-S-H and release of chemically bound water, which begins when the exposure temperature exceeds 500°C. When thermally deteriorated concrete is supplied with water there is a substantive gain in strength as a consequence of rehydration of cement that is initiated. This paper presents results of an experimental program carried out to investigate the effect of recuring on strength gain of normal strength concrete specimens subjected to elevated temperatures from 500°C to 800°C, which were subjected to retention time of two hours at the designated temperatures. © 2011 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY. The tested sandwich structures were constructed with varieties of hybridized skin materials and different compositions of the core materials. The moisture absorption, Flatwise compression and Edgewise compression tests are conducted for core as well as sandwich structures. Comparisons of results have been between the hybridized and non-hybridized sandwich structures. Two modes of collapse were noticed in the Edgewise compressive test, one of which being progressive end-crushing of the sandwich structure featured by significant crash energy absorption. This feature was highly desired for the parts of transportation vehicles. Microscopic analysis has been carried out to know the nature of failure under compressive loads. It has been observed that with increasing the debonding strength of the core-face interface, the failure mode changes from unstable collapse mode stable progressive crushing. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Item Sound radiation and transmission loss characteristics of a honeycomb sandwich panel with composite facings: Effect of inherent material damping(Academic Press, 2016) Arunkumar, M.P.; Jagadeesh, M.; Jeyaraj, J.; Gangadharan, K.V.; Mailan Chinnapandi, M.C.L.This paper presents the results of numerical studies carried out on vibro-acoustic and sound transmission loss behaviour of aluminium honeycomb core sandwich panel with fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) facings. Layered structural shell element with equivalent orthotropic elastic properties of core and orthotropic properties of FRP facing layer is used to predict the free and forced vibration characteristics. Followed by this, acoustic response and transmission loss characteristics are obtained using Rayleigh integral. Vibration and acoustic characteristics of FRP sandwich panels are compared with aluminium sandwich panels. The result reveals that FRP panel has better vibro-acoustic and transmission loss characteristics due to high stiffness and inherent material damping associated with them. Resonant amplitudes of the response are fully controlled by modal damping factors calculated based on modal strain energy. It is also demonstrated that FRP panel can be used to replace the aluminium panel without losing acoustic comfort with nearly 40 percent weight reduction. © 2016 Elsevier LtdItem Influence of nature of core on vibro acoustic behavior of sandwich aerospace structures(Elsevier Masson SAS 62 rue Camille Desmoulins Issy les Moulineaux Cedex 92442, 2016) Arunkumar, M.P.; Jeyaraj, P.; Gangadharan, K.V.; Mailan Chinnapandi, M.C.This paper presents the study of influence of core geometry on vibration and acoustic response characteristics of sandwich panels which are used as aerospace structures. Sandwich panels considered in this research work are: (a) Honeycomb core, (b) Truss and Z core, (c) Foam core. The present study has found that (i) For a honeycomb core sandwich panel in due consideration to space constraint, the better acoustic comfort can be achieved by reducing the core height and increasing the face sheet thickness. (ii) It is demonstrated that, for a honeycomb core sandwich panel, vibration and acoustic response is not sensitive to the cell size. (iii) It is observed that, triangular core gives better acoustic comfort for the truss core sandwich panel compared to other type of core. (iv) For foam core sandwich panels, it is observed that sandwich panel with carbon-epoxy (high stiffness) face sheet radiates less sound in the lower frequency range (0–100 Hz). While the sandwich panel with Titanium (high density) face sheet radiates less sound at the higher frequencies. In order to reduce the preprocessing time and computational effort throughout the analysis in the present study, equivalent 2D elastic properties are calculated and used to find out the vibration and acoustic response characteristics. © 2016 Elsevier Masson SASItem Sound transmission loss characteristics of sandwich aircraft panels: Influence of nature of core(SAGE Publications Ltd info@sagepub.co.uk, 2017) Arunkumar, M.P.; Jeyaraj, J.; Gangadharan, K.V.; Mailan Chinnapandi, M.C.Sandwich panel which has a design involving acoustic comfort is always denser and larger in size than the design involving mechanical strength. The respective short come can be solved by exploring the impact of core geometry on sound transmission characteristics of sandwich panels. In this aspect, the present work focuses on the study of influence of core geometry on sound transmission characteristics of sandwich panels which are commonly used as aircraft structures. Numerical investigation has been carried out based on a 2D model with equivalent elastic properties. The present study has found that, for a honeycomb core sandwich panel in due consideration to space constraint, better sound transmission characteristics can be achieved with lower core height. It is observed that, for a honeycomb core sandwich panel, one can select cell size as the parameter to reduce the weight with out affecting the sound transmission loss. Triangular core sandwich panel can be used for low frequency application due to its increased transmission loss. In foam core sandwich panel, it is noticed that the effect of face sheet material on sound transmission loss is significant and this can be controlled by varying the density of foam. © 2016, © The Author(s) 2016.Item Bending and free vibration analysis of foam-filled truss core sandwich panel(SAGE Publications Ltd info@sagepub.co.uk, 2018) Arunkumar, M.P.; Jeyaraj, P.; Gangadharan, K.V.This paper presents the studies carried out on bending and free vibration behavior of truss core sandwich panel filled with foam typically used in aerospace applications. Equivalent stiffness properties for foam-filled truss core sandwich panel are derived by idealizing 3D foam-filled sandwich panel to an equivalent 2D orthotropic thick plate continuum. The accuracy of the derived elastic property is ensured by the numerical comparison of free vibration response of 3D and its equivalent 2D finite element model. The derived stiffness constants were used in closed form solution to evaluate the maximum deflection of the continuum. The results show that the free vibration and static behavior of the sandwich panel can be enhanced in due consideration to the space constraint by filling foam in the empty space of core. The results also reveal that triangular core foam-filled sandwich panel deflects less compared to other cores. From the free vibration analysis, effect of filling foam is effective in cellular and trapezoidal core. © 2016, © The Author(s) 2016.
