Item Power control strategy for grid connected permanent magnet synchronous generator of a distributed generation unit(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd., 2014) Vinatha Urundady, V.; Vittal, P.K.This paper describes the studies on the operation and control of a variable speed wave energy conversion system. The wave energy conversion system considered is oscillating-water-column (OWC) based Wells turbine driven permanent magnet synchronous generator connected to the grid by means of fully controlled frequency converter. In such systems primary aim is to achieve a low distortion, high power quality power export from the converter with the objective to regulate the power flow or power factor optimisation. In this paper wave energy conversion system is modelled and control schemes are implemented for regulating the dc link voltage for varying input conditions and for regulating the grid current entering the distribution network and hence the power flow into the grid. Response of the system is investigated under steady state, dynamic and transient conditions. In each case the grid current distortion and the dynamic performance of the converter control schemes are evaluated. © © 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.Item An integrated Control Approach and Power Management of Stand-alone Hybrid Wind/PV/Battery Power Generation System with Maximum Power Extraction Capability(Taylor and Francis Inc. 325 Chestnut St, Suite 800 Philadelphia PA 19106, 2015) Sabhahit, N.S.; Gaonkar, D.N.The production of electricity from renewable energy sources like wind and photovoltaic energy has increased in recent years, due to environmental problems and the shortage of traditional energy sources. In this article we present a detailed mathematical model and a control scheme for hybrid wind and PV based DG system with battery and maximum power extraction capability for isolated mode of operation. The wind power generation system uses wind turbine (WT), a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), a three-phase diode rectifier bridge, DC/DC boost converter with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller. The PV generation system uses PV array, a boost converter with maximum power point tracking controller. Both sources and battery are connected to common dc bus with a dc link capacitor and supply power to load through PWM voltage source inverter. The overall control system consists of MPPT controller for both Wind and PV power system, a bi-directional DC-DC converter controller for battery energy storage management and load side inverter controller for voltage and frequency regulation. Control strategies for individual system components of the proposed system are designed with a view to achieve an acceptable level of voltage and frequency regulation while extracting the maximum power from wind and PV system. The performance of the developed hybrid system is investigated in terms of voltage and frequency regulation capability under changing wind, solar irradiation and variable load conditions.Item Power control of PV/fuel cell/supercapacitor hybrid system for stand-alone applications(International Journal of Renewable Energy Research, 2016) Sabhahit, N.S.; Gaonkar, D.N.; Nempu, P.B.This paper presents modeling and control of photovoltaic/fuel cell/supercapacitor hybrid power system for stand-alone applications. The hybrid power system uses solar photovoltaic array and fuel cell as the main sources. These sources share their power effectively to meet the load demand. The supercapacitor bank is used to supply or absorb the power during load transients. The main control system comprises of controller for maximum power tracking from photovoltaic system, a DC-DC boost converter with controller for fuel cell system for power management and inverter controller to regulate voltage and frequency. The stand-alone hybrid system aims to provide quality power supply to the consumers with a constant voltage and frequency along with proper power management using simple control techniques. The modeling and control strategies of the hybrid system are realized in MATLAB/Simulink.Item Single-phase seven-level grid-connected photovoltaic system with ripple correlation control maximum power point tracking(International Journal of Renewable Energy Research, 2016) Sandeep, N.; Yaragatti, R.Y.This paper puts forward a control scheme for single-phase photovoltaic (PV) fed grid connected with cascade Hbridge (CHB) inverter. A unique control strategy based on the voltage ratio is proposed and is embedded with ripple correlation control (RCC) based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to ensure the efficient energy conversion. The control scheme employed enables the independent operation and control of individual DC link voltage, ensuring the extraction of maximum power available from each PV panel. In addition, low harmonic grid currents are generated with an arbitrary power factor. Independent control of active and reactive power is exercised by decoupled component method. Numerical simulation was performed using the MATLAB/SIMULINK platform and results for three H-bridge cells connected in series are presented to support the theoretical concepts and control scheme proposed.Item A new control method to mitigate power fluctuations for grid integrated PV/wind hybrid power system using ultracapacitors(Walter de Gruyter GmbH info@degruyter.com, 2016) Sabhahit, N.S.; Gaonkar, D.N.The output power obtained from solar-wind hybrid system fluctuates with changes in weather conditions. These power fluctuations cause adverse effects on the voltage, frequency and transient stability of the utility grid. In this paper, a control method is presented for power smoothing of grid integrated PV/wind hybrid system using ultracapacitors in a DC coupled structure. The power fluctuations of hybrid system are mitigated and smoothed power is supplied to the utility grid. In this work both photovoltaic (PV) panels and the wind generator are controlled to operate at their maximum power point. The grid side inverter control strategy presented in this paper maintains DC link voltage constant while injecting power to the grid at unity power factor considering different operating conditions. Actual solar irradiation and wind speed data are used in this study to evaluate the performance of the developed system using MATLAB/Simulink software. The simulation results show that output power fluctuations of solar-wind hybrid system can be significantly mitigated using the ultracapacitor based storage system. © by De Gruyter 2016.Item Fuzzy logic approach for reactive power coordination in grid connected wind farms to improve steady state voltage stability(Institution of Engineering and Technology journals@theiet.org, 2017) Moger, T.; Dhadbanjan, T.This study presents a fuzzy logic approach for reactive power coordination in grid connected wind farms with different types of wind generator units to improve steady state voltage stability of power systems. The load bus voltage deviation is minimised by changing the reactive power controllers according to their sensitivity using fuzzy set theory. The proposed approach uses only few controllers of high sensitivity to achieve the desired objectives. The 297-bus and 417-bus equivalent grid connected wind systems are considered to present the simulation results. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a comparative analysis is carried out with the conventional linear programming based reactive power optimisation technique. Results demonstrated that the proposed approach is more effective in improving the system performance as compared with the conventional existing technique. © 2016 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.Item Design and performance analysis of quantitative feedback theory based automated robust controller: An application to uncertain autonomous wind power system(AIMS Press, 2018) Gudimindla, G.; Manjunatha, S.K.Use of a robust controller for handling the operational uncertainties has become imperative in real time. This paper presents a modified fitness function based automated robust controller with the aid of quantitative feedback theory (QFT) using Genetic algorithm (GA). A controller exhibiting the desired decreasing modular plot and descending phase response is devised. The addition of arctangent function as one of the fitness function term is the proposed modification that facilitates in capturing the ideal controller characteristics. The proposed controller is applied to extract maximum power from a permanent magnet synchronous generator based autonomous wind power system. The step by step design guidelines for the automated QFT robust controller is deliberated in detail. The performance evaluation is carried out for step change and stochastically varying wind speed. Finally, benchmarking of the proposed controller against those available in the literature is accomplished through extensive simulations and it will be shown that the maximum power extraction along with least electromagnetic torque oscillations are achieved with the proposed fitness function based automated QFT controller. © 2018 the Author(s).Item ETRT – Cross layer model for optimizing transmission range of nodes in low power wireless networks – An Internet of Things Perspective(Elsevier B.V., 2018) Sarwesh, P.; Shet, N.S.V.; Chandrasekaran, K.Internet of Things network is managed by battery operated devices and low power radio links since they are referred to low power networks. In present communication era, many research works are concentrating on low power wireless network. Cross layer design is one of the acclaimed technique that decidedly improves the network performance. In this article, we come up with the cross-layer model that satisfies distinct network requirements and prolongs network lifetime. It integrates physical layer, data link layer (Media Access Control) and network layer in the protocol stack. In our model, a threshold value called ETRT (Expected Transmission Range Threshold) is introduced, which is computed with the help of routing information. Later, MAC based power control technique utilizes the ETRT value and assigns optimum transmission range for every node. The idea at the heels of proposed cross layer model is estimating the capability (ETRT value) of the particular node and assigning the suitable transmission power for every node, based on its capability (ETRT value). Hence, assigning optimum transmission power based on ETRT information prolongs the network lifetime with better reliability and Quality of Service(QoS). From our results, it is noticed that the ETRT based cross layer model performs twice better than the standard model. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.Item Power sharing control strategy of parallel inverters in AC microgrid using improved reverse droop control(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd., 2020) Chethan Raj, D.; Gaonkar, D.N.; Guerrero, J.M.Microgrid structure is developed on the basis of distributed generation units. Microgrid distributed generation units and energy storage devices are connected through inverters interface to the point of common coupling. Microgrid system with multiple inverters, the use of conventional direct and reverse droop control method will cause uneven distribution of power, which is due to the difference between the output impedance and the line impedance of the inverter. In this paper, the traditional reverse droop control method is introduced, the power distribution of inverter output impedance is analysed, and the defects of traditional reverse droop control are pointed out. Adding virtual resistor in the control loop of reverse droop control improves the power sharing and stability of operation, but also leads to the voltage drop in microgrid. To compensate the output voltage deviation, secondary control is proposed. Simulation results show the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. © © 2020 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.Item Intermittent power smoothing control for grid connected hybrid wind/PV system using battery-EDLC storage devices(Polish Academy of Sciences 12 Smetna Street Krakow 31-343, 2020) Sabhahit, N.S.; Gaonkar, D.N.; Karthik, R.P.; Prasanna, P.Wind and solar radiation are intermittent with stochastic fluctuations, which can influence the stability of operation of the hybrid system in the grid integrated mode of operation. In this research work, a smoothing control method for mitigating output power variations for a grid integrated wind/PV hybrid system using a battery and electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) is investigated. The power fluctuations of the hybrid system are absorbed by a battery and EDLC during wide variations in power generated from the solar and wind system, subsequently, the power supplied to the grid is smoothened. This makes higher penetration and incorporation of renewable energy resources to the utility system possible. The control strategy of the inverter is realized to inject the power to the utility system with the unity power factor and a constant DC bus voltage. Both photovoltaic (PV) and wind systems are controlled for extracting maximum output power. In order to observe the performance of the hybrid system under practical situations in smoothing the output power fluctuations, one-day practical site wind velocity and irradiation data are considered. The dynamic modeling and effectiveness of this control method are verified in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The simulation results show that the output power variations of the hybrid wind/PV system can be significantly mitigated using the combination of battery and EDLC based storage systems. The power smoothing controller proposed for the hybrid storage devices is advantageous as compared to the control technique which uses either battery or ultracapacitor used for smoothing the fluctuating power. © 2020.
