Item Vertical dynamic analysis of a quarter car suspension system with MR damper(Springer Verlag service@springer.de, 2017) Hemanth, K.; Kumar, H.; Gangadharan, K.V.This paper presents ride comfort and road holding analysis of passive and semi-active suspension system using quarter car model. Semi-active suspension system with magnetorheological (MR) damper was modeled as non-parametric model-based magnetic flux density in the fluid flow gap. The skyhook control strategy was used to analyze semi-active control performance. The simulation of passive and semi-active suspension system was carried out under random road profile for different velocities. The result shows that semi-active suspension has significant improvement in terms of ride comfort and road holding of vehicle than passive suspension system. Experimental studies have been conducted to characterize MR damper and a good match is observed between results with simulation results obtained using non-parametric model. © 2016, The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering.Item Optimisation of monotube magnetorheological damper under shear mode(Springer Verlag service@springer.de, 2017) Gurubasavaraju, T.M.; Kumar, H.; Mahalingam, M.Magnetorheological dampers (MR) are one of the semi active devices, which has the capability of providing variable damping force for the variable input current. Induced force is directly dependent on the amount of magnetic flux density developed in effective fluid flow gap of the MR damper. In the present work, influence of material properties on the magnetic flux is investigated by considering magnetic and nonmagnetic material for the outer cylinder of shear mode type MR damper. Magnetostatic analysis is carried out to obtain magnetic flux density for the initial configuration of the MR damper. From the analysis, it is found that usage of magnetic material cylinder which is insulated with nonmagnetic material provided higher value of magnetic flux and damping force. The geometric optimisation of MR damper is carried out to obtain the maximum flux density in the fluid flow gap. The objective function of the optimisation includes the maximum magnetic flux density and minimising fluid flow gap. Design variables considered are fluid flow gap, number of turns in the electromagnetic coil, length of the flange and DC current input. The optimisation is performed through response surface method using finite element analysis software (ANSYS). The best optimal design parameters are obtained by choosing the appropriate value of objective function. The best configuration of the design parameters, which induce the maximum magnetic flux density, is identified. The force induced in the MR damper is estimated analytically and a comparative study of the optimised and non-optimised results was carried out. © 2017, The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering.Item An approach for characterizing twin-tube shear-mode magnetorheological damper through coupled FE and CFD analysis(Springer Verlag service@springer.de, 2018) Gurubasavaraju, T.M.; Kumar, H.; Mahalingam, A.The most promising technology in the field of semi-active suspension systems is the use of magnetorheological property of MR fluid, whose material behavior can be controlled through external magnetic field. Devices developed based on this principle are adaptive and controllable as desired for a specific application. It is important to understand the damping characteristics of these devices before employing them, using experimental or computational approaches. In the present work, both experimental and computational methods have been adopted for characterizing a twin-tube MR damper with an intention to develop a computational approach as an alternative to experimental test in the preliminary design stage. Initially, experimental characterization of MR damper was carried out at 1.5 and 2 Hz frequencies for damper stroke length of ± 5 mm under different DC currents ranging from 0.1 to 0.4 A. Later, coupled finite-element and computational fluid dynamic analysis has been carried out to estimate the damping force under same conditions as used in the experiment. The results of computation are in good agreement with experimental ones. Furthermore, using this computational approach, the damping force at different frequencies of 1.5, 2, 3, and 4 Hz has been estimated and its time histories are also plotted. The influence of fluid flow gap on the damping force has been determined and results revealed that damping force behaves inversely with fluid flow gap. © 2018, The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering.Item Dynamic analysis of half car model with MR damper as semi-active suspension element(International Institute of Acoustics and Vibrations P O Box 13 Auburn AL 36831, 2018) Hemanth, K.; Kumar, H.; Gangadharan, K.V.This paper presents the dynamic analysis of a half-car model with a magnetorheological (MR) damper subjected to random excitation. Experimental studies have been conducted to predict the behavior of the prototype twin-tube MR damper. The mathematical model of the prototype MR damper has been proposed by using the Bouc-Wen model. The half-car model with the MR damper has been used to predict the ride comfort and road holding performance. Comparative studies between the half-car model with the passive and semi-active suspension system with a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control shows that the MR damper suspension system offers a good performance. © 2018 International Institute of Acoustics and Vibrations. A dynamic model of the prosthetic device can predict the kinetic and kinematic performances, when incorporated with a musculoskeletal model. In this regard, a dynamic model of a recent trend of variable damping technology will help a great deal in evaluating the performance of the prosthetic device and also in studying the effect of various parameters on the prostheses. The current paper presents the dynamic model of a single axis two segmental prosthetic knee implemented with a magneto-rheological (MR) damper as a variable damping element. The MR damper is modeled mathematically using Bouc–Wen model with model parameters evaluated by minimizing the error norms for time, displacement and velocity between the experimental and the model-generated results using a genetic algorithm. Two different experimental data sets are used, one for mathematical modeling and other to assess the accuracy of the fit model. A Proportional Derivative plus Controlled Torque controller is employed, and the parameters are tuned to minimize the error between the desired and control input torques. Further, an inverse dynamic model using Bouc–Wen model variables is assumed and validated later. This model predicts the current directly and avoids the necessity of solving any quadratic equation, which is required in the case of inverse models based on modified Bouc–Wen. The dynamic model of the prosthesis is analyzed for the swing phase alone, and the results show that the model traces the desired knee angle and also the shank reaches full knee extension at the end of this phase with terminal velocity small enough to be handled by an extension stop. © 2020, The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering.Item Synthesis of magnetorheological fluid and its application in a twin-tube valve mode automotive damper(SAGE Publications Ltd info@sagepub.co.uk, 2020) Madhavrao Desai, R.; Acharya, S.; Jamadar, M.-E.-H.; Kumar, H.; Joladarashi, S.; Sekaran, S.C.R.The change in rheological properties of smart materials like magnetorheological fluid when brought under the influence of a magnetic field can be utilized to develop magnetorheological devices where the output has to be continuously and quickly varied using electronic control interface. In the present study, magnetorheological fluid is synthesized and used as a smart fluid in a twin-tube magnetorheological damper operating in valve mode. The behavior of the magnetorheological fluid is experimentally characterized in a rheometer and mathematically modeled using Herschel–Bulkley model. The parameters of the Herschel–Bulkley model are expressed as polynomial functions of strength of the magnetic field in order to find the shear stress developed by the magnetorheological fluid at any given strength of the magnetic field applied. The magnetorheological damper, which was designed for application in a passenger van, is tested in the damper testing machine. The performance of the damper at different damper velocities and current supplied is studied. The range of values for the parameters of the experimental testing are chosen to emulate the actual conditions of operation in its intended application. Nondimensional analysis is performed, which links magnetorheological fluid rheological properties and geometrical parameters of magnetorheological damper design with the force developed by the damper. Finite element method magnetics is used to find the strength of the magnetic field at the fluid flow gap. Analytical methods are used to calculate the damper force developed due to the field-dependent yield stress and compared with experimental force values. The resulting dynamic range of the magnetorheological damper is also assessed. © The Author(s) 2020.Item Design of bypass rotary vane magnetorheological damper for prosthetic knee application(SAGE Publications Ltd, 2021) Saini, R.S.T.; Chandramohan, S.; Sujatha, S.; Kumar, H.Semi-active systems using magnetorheological fluids have been realized in many novel devices such as linear dampers, rotary dampers, brakes, and so on. Rotary vane-type magnetorheological damper is one such device that uses magnetorheological fluid as a hydraulic medium and a controllable magnetorheological valve to generate variable resistance. This device, due to its limited angle motion, lends itself to a natural application for prosthetic knee joint. In this article, a bypass rotary vane-type magnetorheological damper suitable for prosthetic knee device is designed. In the proposed design, the rotary vane chamber and the bypass magnetorheological valve are connected using hydraulic cables and ports. The design of rotary cylinder is implemented based on the largest possible dimensions within the envelope of a healthy human knee, while the magnetorheological valve is designed optimally using a multi-objective genetic algorithm optimization. Off-state braking torque, induced on-state braking torque and mass of the valve are selected as three objectives. The torque and angular velocity requirements of the normal human knee are used as design limits. The optimal solution is chosen from the obtained Pareto fronts by prioritizing the objective of weight reduction of magnetorheological valve. The optimal solution is capable of producing a damping torque of 73 Nm at a design speed of 8.4 rpm and current supply of 1.9 A. Potential benefits offered by this design when compared with multi-plate magnetorheological brake are flow mode operation, large clearance gap, and fewer design components, thus reducing the manufacturing complexity. © The Author(s) 2020.Item Design and development of MR damper for two wheeler application and Kwok model parameters tuning for designed damper(SAGE Publications Ltd, 2022) Devikiran, P.; Puneet, N.P.; Hegale, A.; Kumar, H.Magnetorheological dampers have been the interest of many researchers for a few decades for the reason of being an effective and rapidly progressing technology in the field of semi-active controlled suspension. The dynamic behaviour of these devices with nonlinear hysteresis is quite a complicated phenomenon. Hence, this paper aims at the design, modelling and simulation of a custom-made MR damper for a two-wheeler vehicle. The Kwok model has been chosen to mathematically model the MR damper. The model parameters have been optimised by minimizing the error difference between experimental and model-generated force results. A PID control is designed to control the damper effectively depending on the deflection of the damper. The two-wheeler vehicle modelled with four degrees of freedom is coupled with a mathematical model of MR damper in front and rear suspension. Further, the dynamic analysis has been performed in MATLAB/Simulink considering random road input for different velocities and current input conditions. The improved performance of MR damper was observed in suppressing road irregularities using a PID controller. As an implementation part of the work, the developed damper has been implemented in a two wheeler vehicle for performance evaluation at on-road testing conditions. The results showed significant improvement in damper performance with increment of constant current controlling MR dampers. © IMechE 2021.
