Item Geometric transform invariant Brain-MR image analysis for tumor detection(2013) Tom, A.; Jidesh, P.In this work we propose a translational, rotational and scaling invariant scheme for possible detection of tumors in Brain-Magnetic Resonance (MR) images. The method incorporates the features like shape, position and texture to accurately diagnose from the infected images. The geometric transformation invariant nature of the method helps in detecting the tumor in various scales, positions and orientations, at a better rate compared to the state-of-the art methods. The method combines three features (shape, position and texture) to form a feature vector, which is used for detecting the infected parts in the image. In order to improve the accuracy of detection process, we employ a preprocessing step to denoise and enhance the images. The result section details the analysis and results of the proposed method and highlights on the accuracy of the method to properly identify the tumor parts in an MR image. © 2013 IEEE.Item A new nonlocal maximum likelihood estimation method for denoising magnetic resonance images(2013) Rajan, J.; den Dekker, A.J.; Juntu, J.; Sijbers, J.Denoising of Magnetic Resonance images is important for proper visual analysis, accurate parameter estimation, and for further preprocessing of these images. Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation methods were proved to be very effective in denoising Magnetic Resonance (MR) images. Among the ML based methods, the recently proposed Non Local Maximum Likelihood (NLML) approach gained much attention. In the NLML method, the samples for the ML estimation of the true underlying intensity are selected in a non local way based on the intensity similarity of the pixel neighborhoods. This similarity is generally measured using the Euclidean distance. A drawback of this approach is the usage of a fixed sample size for the ML estimation and, as a result, optimal results cannot be achieved because of over- or under-smoothing. In this work, we propose an NLML estimation method for denoising MR images in which the samples are selected in an adaptive way using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) similarity test. The method has been tested both on simulated and real data, showing its effectiveness. © Springer-Verlag 2013.Item A nonlinear level set model for image deblurring and denoising(Springer Verlag service@springer.de, 2014) Bini, A.A.; Bhat, M.S.Image deblurring and denoising are fundamental problems in the field of image processing with numerous applications. This paper presents a new nonlinear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model based on curve evolution via level sets, for recovering images from their blurry and noisy observations. The proposed method integrates an image deconvolution process and a curve evolution based regularizing process to form a reaction-diffusion PDE. The regularization term in the proposed PDE is a combination of a diffusive image smoothing term and a reactive image enhancement term. The diffusive and reactive terms present in the model lead to effective suppression of noise with sharp restoration of image features. We present several numerical results for image restoration, with synthetic and real degradations and compare it to other state-of-the-art image restoration techniques. The experiments confirm the favorable performance of our method, both visually and in terms of Improvement in Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (ISNR) and Pratt's Figure Of Merit (FOM). © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Item A new non-local maximum likelihood estimation method for Rician noise reduction in magnetic resonance images using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test(Elsevier, 2014) Rajan, J.; den Dekker, A.J.; Sijbers, J.Denoising algorithms play an important role in the enhancement of magnetic resonance (MR) images. Effective denoising is vital for proper analysis and accurate quantitative measurements from MR images. Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation methods were proved to be very effective in denoising MR images. In this work, we propose an NLML estimation method for denoising MR images in which the samples are selected in an adaptive and statistically supported way using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) similarity test. Denoising can enhance the quality (by improving the SNR) of the acquired MR image, which is important for both visual analysis and other post processing operations. Recent works on maximum likelihood (ML) based denoising shows that ML methods are very effective in denoising MR images and has an edge over the other state-of-the-art methods for MRI denoising. Among the ML based approaches, the Nonlocal maximum likelihood (NLML) method is commonly used. In the conventional NLML method, the samples for the ML estimation of the unknown true pixel are chosen in a nonlocal fashion based on the intensity similarity of the pixel neighborhoods. Euclidean distance is generally used to measure this similarity. It has been recently shown that computing similarity measure is more robust in discrete cosine transform (DCT) subspace, compared with Euclidean image subspace. Motivated by this observation, we integrated DCT into NLML to produce an improved MRI filtration process. Other than improving the SNR, the time complexity of the conventional NLML can also be significantly reduced through the proposed approach. On synthetic MR brain image, an average improvement of 5% in PSNR and 86%reduction in execution time is achieved with a search window size of 91 × 91 after incorporating the improvements in the existing NLML method. On an experimental kiwi fruit image an improvement of 10% in PSNR is achieved. We did experiments on both simulated and real data sets to validate and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bilateral filter is known for its effectiveness in edge-preserved image denoising. In this paper, an iterative bilateral filter for filtering the Rician noise in the magnitude magnetic resonance images is proposed. The proposed iterative bilateral filter improves the denoising efficiency, preserves the fine structures and also reduces the bias due to Rician noise. The visual and diagnostic quality of the image is well preserved. The quantitative analysis based on the standard metrics like peak signal-to-noise ratio and mean structural similarity index matrix shows that the proposed method performs better than the other recently proposed denoising methods for MRI. © 2014, Springer-Verlag London.Item Speckle reduction in medical ultrasound images using an unbiased non-local means method(Elsevier Ltd, 2016) Sudeep, P.V.; Ponnusamy, P.; Rajan, J.; Baradaran, H.; Saba, L.; Gupta, A.; Suri, J.S.Enhancement of ultrasound (US) images is required for proper visual inspection and further pre-processing since US images are generally corrupted with speckle. In this paper, a new approach based on non-local means (NLM) method is proposed to remove the speckle noise in the US images. Since the interpolated final Cartesian image produced from uncompressed ultrasound data contaminated with fully developed speckle can be represented by a Gamma distribution, a Gamma model is incorporated in the proposed denoising procedure. In addition, the scale and shape parameters of the Gamma distribution are estimated using the maximum likelihood (ML) method. Bias due to speckle noise is expressed using these parameters and is removed from the NLM filtered output. The experiments on phantom images and real 2D ultrasound datasets show that the proposed method outperforms other related well-accepted methods, both in terms of objective and subjective evaluations. The results demonstrate that the proposed method has a better performance in both speckle reduction and preservation of structural features. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. However, MR images degrade in quality due to noise. The magnitude MRI data in the presence of noise generally follows a Rician distribution if acquired with single-coil systems. Several methods are proposed in the literature for denoising MR images corrupted with Rician noise. Amongst the methods proposed in literature for denoising MR images corrupted with Rician noise, the non-local maximum likelihood methods (NLML) and its variants are popular. In spite of the performance and denoising quality, NLML algorithm suffers from a tremendous time complexity O(m3N3) , where m3 and N3 represent the search window and image size, respectively, for a 3D image. This makes the algorithm challenging for deployment in the real-time applications where fast and prompt results are required. A viable solution to this shortcoming would be the application of a data parallel processing framework such as Nvidia CUDA so as to utilize the mutually exclusive and computationally intensive calculations to our advantage. The GPU-based implementation of NLML-based image denoising achieves significant speedup compared to the serial implementation. This research paper describes the first successful attempt to implement a GPU-accelerated version of the NLML algorithm. The main focus of the research was on the parallelization and acceleration of one computationally intensive section of the algorithm so as to demonstrate the execution time improvement through the application of parallel processing concepts on a GPU. Our results suggest the possibility of practical deployment of NLML and its variants for MRI denoising. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Item Guided SAR image despeckling with probabilistic non local weights(Elsevier Ltd, 2017) Gokul, J.; Nair, M.S.; Rajan, J.SAR images are generally corrupted by granular disturbances called speckle, which makes visual analysis and detail extraction a difficult task. Non Local despeckling techniques with probabilistic similarity has been a recent trend in SAR despeckling. To achieve effective speckle suppression without compromising detail preservation, we propose an improvement for the existing Generalized Guided Filter with Bayesian Non-Local Means (GGF-BNLM) method. The proposed method (Guided SAR Image Despeckling with Probabilistic Non Local Weights) replaces parametric constants based on heuristics in GGF-BNLM method with dynamically derived values based on the image statistics for weight computation. Proposed changes make GGF-BNLM method adaptive and as a result, significant improvement is achieved in terms of performance. Experimental analysis on SAR images shows excellent speckle reduction without compromising feature preservation when compared to GGF-BNLM method. Results are also compared with other state-of-the-art and classic SAR depseckling techniques to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2017 Elsevier LtdItem Two-Dimensional CS Adaptive FIR Wiener Filtering Algorithm for the Denoising of Satellite Images(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2017) Suresh, S.; Lal, S.In the recent years, researchers are quite much attracted in designing two-dimensional (2-D) adaptive finite-impulse response (FIR) filters driven by an optimization algorithm to self-adjust the filter coefficients, with applications in different domains of research. For signal processing applications, FIR Wiener filters are commonly used for noisy signal restorations by computing the statistical estimates of the unknown signal. In this paper, a novel 2-D Cuckoo search adaptive Wiener filtering algorithm (2D-CSAWF) is proposed for the denoising of satellite images contaminated with Gaussian noise. Till date, study based on 2-D adaptive Wiener filtering driven by metaheuristic algorithms was not found in the literature to the best of our knowledge. Comparisons are made with the most studied and recent 2-D adaptive noise filtering algorithms, so as to analyze the performance and computational efficiency of the proposed algorithm. We have also included comparisons with recent adaptive metaheuristic algorithms used for satellite image denoising to ensure a fair comparison. All the algorithms are tested on the same satellite image dataset, for denoising images corrupted with three different Gaussian noise variance levels. The experimental results reveal that the proposed novel 2D-CSAWF algorithm outperforms others both quantitatively and qualitatively. Investigations were also carried out to examine the stability and computational efficiency of the proposed algorithm in denoising satellite images. © 2008-2012 IEEE.
