    Catalytic oxidation of alcohols by nickel(II) Schiff base complexes containing triphenylphosphine in ionic liquid: An attempt towards green oxidation process

    A series of square planar nickel(II) complexes containing N,O donor Schiff base ligand, i.e. N-(2-pyridyl)-N?-(5-substituted-salicylidene)hydrazine and triphenylphosphine, have been synthesized and characterized by analytical and spectral methods. Catalytic activities of all the complexes have been studied for the oxidation of alcohols in ionic liquid media using NaOCl as oxidant. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Third-order optical nonlinear studies of Cobalt (II) Schiff base complex bearing triphenylphosphine using Differential Optical Kerr Gate and Z-scan studies

    The third-order optical nonlinearity of the composite film of coordination complex [CoLPPh3Cl] (L = N-(2-pyridyl)-N?-(salicylidene)hydrazine) and PMMA has been investigated by using Differential Optical Kerr Gate (DOKG) and Z-scan measurements. Large value of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (?(3)) of the order of 10-10 esu was measured and its nonlinear response time was found to be faster than or comparable to the laser pulse width (90 fs) used. The single beam Z-scan technique was used to investigate the nonlinear absorption property of the composite near 800 nm. The sample exhibit saturable absorption. The nonlinear absorption coefficient of sample is found to be -32 cm/GW. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Palladium-Schiff base-triphenylphosphine catalyzed oxidation of alcohols

    Novel palladium(II)-N-(2-pyridyl)-N'-(5-R-salicylidene) hydrazine triphenylphosphine complexes were synthesized and characterized by UV, IR, 1HNMR and31P NMR spectral analysis, C, H, N analysis andmagnetic susceptibilitymeasurements. The complexes were effective in the catalytic oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols in presence of N-methyl-morpholine-Noxide as oxidant. The oxidation reactions were carried out in dichloromethane. A mechanistic study of the above reactions has been proposed. Copyright© 2010 JohnWiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Nonlinear optical study of palladium Schiff base complex using femtosecond differential optical Kerr gate and Z-scan techniques

    A femtosecond differential optical Kerr gate (DOKG) and Z-scan techniques, have been applied to investigate the third-order optical nonlinearity of composite film of the coordination complex [PdLPPh 3] (L=N-(2-pyridyl)-N'-(salicylidene)hydrazine, PPh 3=triphenylphosphine) . Film exhibits superior nonlinear optical properties in the near-infrared spectral region. The nonlinear response time and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of complex were found to be?90 fs and 3.9×10 -10 esu, respectively. The Z-scan result shows that saturable absorption property of the film and its nonlinear absorption coefficient of the sample was found to be -23 cm/GW. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Production and characterization of biosurfactant produced by a novel Pseudomonas sp. 2B

    Biosurfactant-producing bacteria were isolated from terrestrial samples collected in areas contaminated with petroleum compounds. Isolates were screened for biosurfactant production using Cetyl Tri Ammonium Bromide (CTAB)-Methylene blue agar selection medium and the qualitative drop-collapse test. An efficient bacterial strain was selected based on rapid drop collapse activity and highest biosurfactant production. The biochemical characteristics and partial sequenced 16S rRNA gene of isolate, 2B, identified the bacterium as Pseudomonas sp. Five different low cost carbon substrates were evaluated for their effect on biosurfactant production. The maximum biosurfactant synthesis (4.97g/L) occurred at 96h when the cells were grown on modified PPGAS medium containing 1% (v/v) molasses at 30°C and 150rpm. The cell free broth containing the biosurfactant could reduce the surface tension to 30.14mN/m. The surface active compound showed emulsifying activity against a variety of hydrocarbons and achieved a maximum emulsion index of 84% for sunflower oil. Compositional analysis of the biosurfactant reveals that the extracted biosurfactant was a glycolipid type, which was composed of high percentages of lipid (~65%, w/w) and carbohydrate (~32%, w/w). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum of extracted biosurfactant indicates the presence of carboxyl, hydroxyl and methoxyl functional groups. The mass spectra (MS) shows that dirhamnolipid (l-rhamnopyranosyl-l-rhamnopyranosyl-3-hydroxydecanoyl-3-hydroxydecanoate, Rha-Rha-C 10-C 10) was detected in abundance with the predominant congener monorhamnolipid (l-rhamnopyranosyl-?-hydroxydecanoyl-?-hydroxydecanoate, Rha-C 10-C 10). The crude oil recovery studies using the biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas sp. 2B suggested its potential application in microbial enhanced oil recovery and bioremediation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V..

    Electron irradiation effects on optical properties of semiorganic antimony thiourea tetra chloride single crystals

    Antimony thiourea tetra chloride single crystals were grown by solution growth technique at room temperature. The UV-visible, fourier transform infrared and fluorescence spectra were recorded and electron irradiation effects on these properties were studied. The optical absorption edge of the UV-visible spectrum slightly shifts towards longer wavelength with the increase of irradiation dose. The fluorescence quantum yield is decreased for electron irradiated antimony thiourea tetra chloride crystals. The presence of functional group of the as-grown and electron irradiated complex was confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectral study. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    In vivo anticancer and histopathology studies of Schiff bases on Ehrlich ascitic carcinoma cells. 1st Cancer Update.

    Three Schiff bases in two different concentrations were evaluated for their anti-tumor activity against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) bearing Swiss albino mice. The in vivo anti-tumor potency of Schiff bases was assessed by measuring the increase in mean survival time of the drug treated over untreated control mice and treated standard (cisplatin) mice. Their toxicity was assessed in vivo in normal, standard, and EAC-bearing mice by measuring the drug-induced changes in biochemical as well as hematological parameters. The histopathology studies to assess the toxicity of these compounds on vital organs also have been studied. Among the three Schiff bases studied, 4-({[3-(4-fluorophenyl)-1. H-pyrazol-4-yl]methylene}amino)-5-[(2-methylphenoxy)methyl]-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (SB-3) at an optimal dose of 100. mg/kg body weight was found to enhance the mean survival time of infected mice. Deviated hematological parameters and mean survival time in tumor bearing mice were found to be significantly restored towards normal after treatment with SB-3 100. mg/kg body weight of mice. The ALP and SGOT values were found to approach the normal range. A:G ratios also did not deviate from normal on treatment with SB-3. The histopathology studies revealed only mild hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity when compared to the normal and standard. The splenic cellularity also did not show much variation from normal. SB-3 at a prime dose of 100. mg has shown promising anticancer activity in vivo against EAC when compared to standard drug with minimum toxic effects. © 2010 .

    Synthesis and antimicrobial activities of some novel 1,2,4-triazole derivatives

    In the present investigation, a series of new Schiff bases 4a-f were synthesized by the condensation of N-[(4-amino-5-sulfanyl-4. H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)methyl]-4-substituted-benzamides 3a-b with various substituted aromatic aldehydes in ethanol-dioxane mixture using catalytic amount of sulfuric acid. The starting materials 3a-b were in turn synthesized by the fusion of benzoyl glycine/substituted benzoylglycine with thiocarbohydrazide. Newly synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, NMR, mass spectra and elemental analyses. All the compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activity using the Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) method by serial dilution technique. Few of the compounds were found to be biologically active. © 2011.

    Synthesis, characterization and antibacterial activity of some new pyrazole based Schiff bases

    In the present study a series of new Schiff bases were synthesized. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, 1H NMR, mass spectral and elemental analyses. Newly synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) activity. The results revealed that, compounds 3f and 3c have exhibited significant biological activity against the tested microorganisms. © 2011.

    Investigation of third-order nonlinear and optical power limiting properties of terphenyl derivatives

    A series of new chalcones containing terphenyl as a core and with different functional groups has been successfully synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt condensation method in search of new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Molecular structural characterization for the compounds was achieved by FTIR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The third-order NLO absorption and refraction coefficients were simultaneously determined by Z-scan technique. The measurements were performed at 532 nm with 7 ns laser pulses using a Nd:YAG laser in solution form. The Z-scan experiments reveal that the compounds exhibit strong nonlinear refraction coefficient of the order 10-11 esu and the molecular two photon absorption cross section is 10-46 cm 4 s/photon. The results also show that the structures of the compounds have great impact on NLO properties. The compounds show optical power limiting behavior due to two-photon absorption (TPA). © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
