Item Magnetron sputtered MoO3/carbon nanotube composite electrodes for electrochemical supercapacitor(Elsevier B.V., 2013) Aravinda, L.S.; Nagaraja, K.K.; Bhat, K.; Badekai Ramachandra, B.Molybdenum oxide (MoO3) has been deposited on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using DC reactive magnetron sputtering of molybdenum for supercapacitor applications. The deposits of MoO3 have been developed under different intervals of time. The structure and surface morphology of the deposits have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). X-ray diffraction peaks of the composite films reveal the formation of crystalline structure of MoO3. The electrochemical performance of the composite films was studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The composite film exhibits maximum specific capacitance of 70 F g-1 at a scan rate of 10 mV s-1 in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. The nanocomposite electrode material shows specific capacitance which is almost four fold increase with respect to that of bare MWCNTs. The effect of coating duration on specific capacitance has been studied. The nanocomposite film is found to display good cycleability, even up to 1000 cycles. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. The nano composite was prepared by using reactive magnetron sputtering in Ar/O2 environment. This approach leads to more uniform coating with tuneable thickness, which alters the electrochemical performance of the nano composite electrodes. The structure and surface morphology of the composite film have been studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The XRD study reveals the formation of Wurtzite ZnO structure. The electrochemical performance of nano composite electrode was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, chronopotentiometry and electrochemical impedance measurements in non-aqueous electrolyte. The nano composite electrode shows significant increase in the specific capacitance up to 48 F g-1 with an energy density 13.1 Wh kg-1 in the potential range -2 V to 1 V. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The formation mechanism of graphene nanosheets (GNS) as investigated by Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy techniques reveal surface defect generation, intercalation and exfoliation as the main steps. The rapid and local Joule heating of graphite by microwave radiation results in simultaneous deoxygenation and exfoliation forming GNS. The as-synthesized GNS are a few layer thick with a high surface area of 937.6 m2 g-1 and a high C/O ratio of 9.2. These results open the perspective of replacing toxic oxidizing and reducing agents by environment friendly chemicals of similar efficacy, thus facilitating the large-scale production of GNS by a greener method. Furthermore, GNS exhibits good electrochemical performance with a large specific capacitance (197 F g-1), excellent rate capability and a long cycle life (1000 cycles) in neat 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIMBF4) electrolyte. It also has a high energy density of 76.03 W h kg-1 while simultaneously possessing a high power density of 1.12 kW kg-1. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.Item Solar exfoliated graphene and its application in supercapacitors and electrochemical H2O2 sensing(Elsevier Ltd, 2015) Moolayadukkam, M.; Huang, N.M.; Nagaraja, H.S.In the present study, graphene nanosheets are synthesized using sunlight irradiation focussed onto graphite oxide. The morphological characteristics of graphene are examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are used for the structural characterization of the sample. The electrochemical performance is evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), charge-discharge characteristics and impedance spectroscopy. A high specific capacitance value of 223 F g-1 is obtained using cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical detection of H2O2, a common biological species using solar graphene is demonstrated. The impedance spectroscopy and CV are used to study the electrocatalytic activity of the material. High sensitivity of 64.79 ?A mM-1 cm-2 is reported. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. In this ternary composite, NiO with an average particle size of 7 nm is regularly decorated on the surfaces of conductive carbon matrix networks such as MWCNTs and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Here rGO serves as an ideal support for the uniform distribution of NiO nanoparticles and also functions as an efficient transducer material, whereas, MWCNTs act as a spacer between rGO, which enhances the electrical conductivity and accessibility of the active reaction sites for direct glucose oxidation. The electrochemical performances were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and amperometric techniques. Under the optimal conditions, the 20 wt% NiO-MWCNT/rGO/GCE exhibits a sensitivity of 4223.3 ?A cm-2 mM-1 and a detection limit of 0.92 ?M over a linear glucose concentration range up to 19 mM. Furthermore, the constructed sensor is effectively employed to detect glucose in real human blood serum samples with adequate results. The modified 20 wt% NiO-MWCNT/rGO/GCE also shows a high sensitivity, greater selectivity, excellent reproducibility and long-term stability. © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry.Item Fabrication and performance evaluation of hybrid supercapacitor electrodes based on carbon nanotubes and sputtered TiO2(Institute of Physics Publishing michael.roberts@iop.org, 2016) Aravinda, L.S.; Nagaraja, K.K.; Nagaraja, H.S.; Bhat, K.U.; Badekai Ramachandra, B.R.We report a simple and eco-friendly method for the fabrication of a titanium dioxide/functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (TiO2/FMWCNT) composite electrode for use in supercapacitors. The nanocomposite electrodes were formed by depositing titanium dioxide onto FMWCNTs using reactive magnetron sputtering, thus providing a green roue for the formation of the binder-free composite electrode. It is shown that the electrochemical performance of the fabricated electrodes can be altered by tuning the thickness of the titanium dioxide overlayer. The integrated nanocomposite electrode showed an improved specific capacitance of 90 Fg-1 in two-electrode configuration. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd.Item Microwave assisted growth of stannous ferrite microcubes as electrodes for potentiometric nonenzymatic H2O2 sensor and supercapacitor applications(Elsevier Ltd, 2016) Bindu, K.; Sridharan, K.; Ajith, K.M.; Lim, H.N.; Nagaraja, H.S.Electrochemical sensors and supercapacitors are two noteworthy applications of electrochemistry. Herein, we report the synthesis of SnFe2O4 microcubes and Fe2O3 nanorods through a facile microwave assisted technique which are employed in fabricating the electrodes for nonenzymatic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sensor and supercapacitor applications. SnFe2O4 microcubes exhibited an enhanced specific capacitance of 172 Fg?1 at a scan rate of 5 mVs?1 in comparison to Fe2O3 nanorods (70 Fg?1). Furthermore, the H2O2 sensing performance of the fabricated SnFe2O4 electrodes through chronopotentiometry studies in 0.1 M PBS solution (at pH 7) with a wide linear range revealed a good sensitivity of 2.7 mV ?M?1 ?g?1 with a lowest detection limit of 41 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. These results indicate that SnFe2O4 microcubes are excellent materials for the cost effective design and development of efficient supercapacitors as well as nonenzymatic sensors. © 2016 Elsevier LtdItem Hydrothermally synthesized reduced graphene oxide and Sn doped manganese dioxide nanocomposites for supercapacitors and dopamine sensors(Elsevier Ltd, 2017) Shanbhag, D.; Bindu, K.; Aarathy, A.R.; Ramesh, R.; Moolayadukkam, M.; Nagaraja, H.S.?-MnO2 nanowires and its nanocomposites (rGO-MnO2 and Sn@rGO-MnO2) were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal technique. Two important electrochemical applications of nanocomposites, viz, electrodes for supercapacitor and sensors for a biomolecule, dopamine are reported. The prepared nanowires have been characterized by XRD, which reveals smaller crystallite size of rGO- MnO2 composites compared to pristine MnO2 and the trend is supported by BET analysis. The wrapping of MnO2 NWs with rGO sheets increases the surface area, as well as, creates more dislocations at the interfaces. The correlation between physicochemical properties leads to an enhancement in the electrochemical performance of the materials. The as-fabricated Sn@rGO-MnO2 supercapacitor electrode reveals superior performance. The specific capacitance of 139.05, 309.7 and 460.9 F/g at a scanning rate of 20 mV/s, in an aqueous Na2SO4 solution (1 M) is obtained for MnO2, rGO-MnO2 and Sn@rGO-MnO2 respectively. Also, the reported nanocomposites show excellent performance towards detection of dopamine. Among ?-MnO2/GCE, rGO-MnO2/GCE and Sn@rGO-MnO2/GCE based sensors for Dopamine detection, rGO-MnO2/GCE sensor exhibits the highest sensitivity of 433.6 ?A/mM and broad linear range, whereas Sn@rGO-MnO2 exhibits lower detection limit of 0.13 ?M. © 2017 Elsevier LtdItem Porous cobalt chalcogenide nanostructures as high performance pseudo-capacitor electrodes(Elsevier Ltd, 2017) Bhat, K.S.; Shenoy, S.; Nagaraja, H.S.; Sridharan, K.Electrochemical supercapacitor is an essential technology that is pivotal for the development of reliable energy storage devices. Herein, we report the fabrication of supercapacitor electrodes using nanostructured porous cobalt chalcogenide (CoTe2 and CoSe2) electrodes, anticipating an enhanced performance owing to their higher contact area with electrolyte and large pore volume enabling shorter diffusion paths for ion exchange. In this regard, we synthesized CoTe2 and CoSe2 nanostructures via an anion-exchange-reaction between pre-synthesized Co(OH)2 hexagonal nanosheets and chalcogen (tellurium and selenium) ions under hydrothermal conditions. Structural, morphological and compositional properties of the as-synthesized materials are examined using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Pseudo-capacitive properties of CoTe2 and CoSe2 nanostructures as working electrodes are studied through cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge methods using an electrochemical workstation. CoSe2 electrode delivered a specific capacitance of 951 F g?1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s?1, which surprisingly is almost three times higher in comparison to CoTe2 electrode (360 F g?1). Both CoTe2 and CoSe2 electrodes exhibited good capacitance retention capability for 2500 CV cycles. The superior electrochemical performance of the nanoporous CoSe2 electrode indicate their applicability for high-performance energy storage device applications. © 2017 Elsevier LtdItem Facile in-situ single step chemical synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-copper oxide-polyaniline nanocomposite and its electrochemical performance for supercapacitor application(Elsevier Ltd, 2017) Viswanathan, V.; Nityananda Shetty, A.Reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-copper oxide-polyaniline nanocomposites were synthesized by facile in-situ single step synthesis method with different weight ratio of polyaniline at fixed weight ratios of copper oxide and reduced graphene oxide (rGO); and characterized by IR spectroscopy, powder XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The electrochemical performances of as synthesized composites were studied using two electrode system in 2 M Na2SO4 as electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The composite with a weight of 300 mg of Polyaniline (PANI), corresponding to the composition (wt %) of rGO6.6%: Cu2O/CuO13.40%: PANI80% (GCP-300) exhibited superior electrochemical characteristics with specific capacitance of 213.20 F g?1, energy density of 18.95 W h kg?1, power density of 545.79 W kg?1, columbic efficiency of 91% and rendered 97.6% of retention of its initial capacitance up to 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The performance is superior to those of binary combinations of constituent materials viz., reduced graphene oxide (rGO), copper oxide and polyaniline, which is attributed to the extent of integration of afore mentioned materials. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd
