    A sensitivity matrix-based temperature-augmented probabilistic load flow study

    This paper proposes a hybridmethod for probabilistic load flow (PLF) study to analyze the influence of uncertain photovoltaic generations and load demands on transmission system performance. Besides, the paper focuses on accurate approximation of multimodal distributions of result variables in a temperatureaugmented PLF model without using any series expansion methods. The effect of uncertain ambient temperature on result variables is discussed. Multiple correlation cases between the input bus powers are considered. The performance of the proposed method is investigated on modified New England 39-bus power system. The results are compared with four well-established analyticalmethods and Monte Carlo simulation. The effect of multiple input correlations on probability distributions of result variables is analyzed. © 2017 IEEE.

    Impact of Different PQ Models of Wind Turbine Generating Units (WTGUs) on System Voltage Performance

    This paper presents the voltage performance analysis of the system with various types of wind turbine generating units (WTGUs). A detailed voltage performance analysis is carried out by considering the different PQ models used for computing the reactive power output of the WTGUs (fixed/semi-variable speed and variable speed WTGUs). The different PQ models of fixed/semi-variable speed WTGUs incorporated for the studies are voltage dependent model, voltage independent model, power factor based model, and PX model. In addition, the variable speed WTGUs are also considered in different fixed power factor mode of operation. Based on these models, a comparative analysis is presented. A modified 27-bus equivalent distribution test system with dispersed wind generation is considered for the studies. Further, the case studies have been carried out by considering the various wind power output levels of WTGUs to examine its impact on system voltage performance. From the comparative analysis, the power factor based model can be the best choice over the other models (which are based on voltages) for the system studies with fixed/semi-variable speed WTGUs. © 2017 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston 2017.

    Cumulant-based correlated probabilistic load flow considering photovoltaic generation and electric vehicle charging demand

    This paper applies a cumulant-based analytical method for probabilistic load flow (PLF) assessment in transmission and distribution systems. The uncertainties pertaining to photovoltaic generations and aggregate bus load powers are probabilistically modeled in the case of transmission systems. In the case of distribution systems, the uncertainties pertaining to plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and battery electric vehicle charging demands in residential community as well as charging stations are probabilistically modeled. The probability distributions of the result variables (bus voltages and branch power flows) pertaining to these inputs are accurately established. The multiple input correlation cases are incorporated. Simultaneously, the performance of the proposed method is demonstrated on a modified Ward-Hale 6-bus system and an IEEE 14-bus transmission system as well as on a modified IEEE 69-bus radial and an IEEE 33-bus mesh distribution system. The results of the proposed method are compared with that of Monte-Carlo simulation. © 2017, Higher Education Press and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

    Integrated power flowand voltage regulation of stand-alone PV-fuel cell system with supercapacitors

    The output of the solar cell is fluctuating due to intermittency of solar irradiation. Hybridizing the solar photovoltaic (PV) system with other sources and appropriate storage devices is essential to generate electricity continuously. This paper presents the control strategies for a PV-fuel cell hybrid power system with supercapacitor bank for isolated load applications. Supercapacitor bank is controlled using a bidirectional DC/DC converter so as to regulate voltage at a DC link and to keep the system stable under transient load variations. The H-bridge inverter is controlled to regulate voltage and frequency across the load. The PV system is controlled to extract maximum power using the maximum power point tracking algorithm. This paper aims to provide a single-phase supply with constant voltage and frequency to the consumers with proper power sharing among different sources. The hybrid system is realized in Matlab/Simulink environment.

    Aileron endurance test rig design based on high fidelity mathematical modeling

    This paper presents a model-based approach to design aileron endurance test rig (ETR). ETR is a dynamic load simulator which simulates aerodynamic load on-ground for verifying and validating the design, performance and stability of aileron actuator. Aileron actuator is a servo-controlled linear hydraulic actuator used to control the movement of ailerons in aircraft. Aileron is one of the primary flight control surfaces which controls roll of the aircraft. In ETR, Aileron actuator acts as unit under test (UUT) while a double-acting linear hydraulic actuator produces a dynamic load with the help of high pressure fluid source and electro-hydraulic servo valve (EHSV). The design of the test rig depends on load and velocity requirements which vary widely over the whole flight envelop and depends on deflection of surface, angle of attack, aircraft speed and altitude. One of the critical factor in designing ETR is to accurately model the interaction between the UUT and load system. This paper presents a simple yet powerful approach of free body diagram to account the power flow between the two systems. Model-based approach allowed to simulate the complete test rig behavior identifying the values of the critical parameters prior to building it. A high fidelity, non-linear mathematical model of aileron ETR is developed, simulated and verified. An appropriate load actuator and its electro-hydraulic servo valve are chosen to meet load and velocity requirements. The minimum rig structure stiffness is determined to ensure the stability of the load control system. A velocity feed-forward-based load controller along with proportional-integral control is implemented and tuned to meet the load control performance satisfactorily.     An over-limit risk assessment of PV integrated power system using probabilistic load flow based on multi-time instant uncertainty modeling

    In this paper, the risk assessment of a PV integrated power system is accomplished by computing the over-limit probabilities and the severities of events such as under-voltage, over-voltage, over-load, and thermal over-load. These aspects are computed by performing temperature-augmented probabilistic load flow (TPLF) using Monte Carlo simulation. For TPLF, the historical data for PV generation, ambient temperature, and load power, each collected at twelve specific time instants of a day for the past five years are pre-processed by using three linear regression models for accurate uncertainty modeling. For PV generation data, the developed model is capable of filtering out the annual predictable periodic variation (owing to positioning of the Sun) and decreasing production trend due to ageing effect whereas, for ambient temperature and load power, the corresponding models accurately remove the annual cyclic variations in the data and their growth. The simulations pertaining to the aforesaid risk assessment are performed on a PV integrated New England 39-bus test system. The system over-limit risk indices are calculated for different PV penetrations and input correlations. In addition, the changes in the values of TPLF model parameters on the statistics of the result variables are analyzed. The risk indices so obtained help in executing necessary steps to reduce system risks for reliable operation. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

    Fuzzy PI controller for bidirectional power flow applications with harmonic current mitigation under unbalanced scenario

    The depletion of fossil fuels and environmental concern forces the extraction of power from low carbon fuels causes generation problem due to intermittent solar-wind renewable energy sources and power electronic applications. Furthermore, the significant amount of non-linear loads in the system causes power quality problems. Nowadays, the more and more DC loads like LED lights to save energy consumption are connected to the AC distribution system. These DC loads are connected at DC grid side in order to avoid the extra AC/DC power conversion loss. In this paper, the proposed d-q reference current method applied for shunt active power filter based 3-phase 4-leg bidirectional interfacing converter with fuzzy PI controller to achieve the real power transfer between DC grid side and AC grid side with current harmonics compensation at common connecting point simultaneously under balanced and unbalanced distorted grid and non-linear load conditions. The hysteresis current control comparator without PLL is used to compare actual grid current with reference filter current and generate the switching pulses for driving the bidirectional interfacing converter. The DC grid shunt connected intermittent hybrid solar-wind energy sources are integrating with AC grid utility through bidirectional interfacing converter has been into consideration for simulation studies. The MATLAB/SIMULINK tool is used to yield the improved grid current THD with fuzzy logic controller over PI controller. © 2018 the Author(s), licensee AIMS Press.

    Integrated Power Flow Analysis with Large-scale Solar Photovoltaic Power Systems Employing N-R Method

    A method is proposed to modify the conventional load flow programme to accommodate large-scale Solar PhotoVoltaics (SPV) power plant with series power specifications. The programme facilitates easy handling of any number of SPV systems with standard control strategies such as pf-control and voltage-control, considering solar inverter's power constraints. In this method, the non-linear equations related to SPV systems, located at multiple locations, are solved with the main load flow equations in an integrated fashion, considerably reducing the implementation task. This task is achieved by augmenting the inverter buses to the existing power system network in such a way that the changes required in the conventional programme are minimal. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, it is compared with the alternate-iteration method popularly followed in the literature. The workability of the proposed method has been demonstrated by using a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system and the IEEE14-bus power system with SPV systems. Various test cases pertaining to meteorological variables and control strategies are also presented. © 2019 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston 2019.

    Faster load flow algorithm for radial distribution network using graph theory

    Since last 3 decades, load flow solutions have enjoyed success on different fronts. Primarily, the importance and utility of these algorithms is assessed using performance measures, which usually include issue like implementation complicacy, optimized execution time, and memory storage. In this work, a graph-theoretical approach is used to facilitate load flow solutions for a static network topology. Algorithm is tested for 2 different radial distribution topologies, and its deployment for both of these network finally results in phenomenal saving on 2 important algorithm performance measures, ie, time and space complexity. Obtained phenomenal saving for both of these 2 parameters is compared with earlier reported work on statistical basis. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    A spatiotemporal probabilistic model-based temperature-augmented probabilistic load flow considering PV generations

    The probabilistic steady-state forecasting of a PV-integrated power system requires a suitable forecasting model capable of accurately characterizing the uncertainties and correlations among multivariate inputs. The critical and foremost difficulties in the development of such a model include the accurate representation of the characterizing features such as complex nonstationary pattern, non-Gaussianity, and spatial and temporal correlations. This paper aims at developing an improved high-dimensional multivariate spatiotemporal model through enhanced preprocessing, transformation techniques, principal component analysis, and a suitable time series model that is capable of accurately modeling the trend in the variance of uncertain inputs. The proposed model is applied to the probabilistic load flow carried out on the modified Indian utility 62-bus transmission system using temperature-augmented system model for an operational planning study. A detailed discussion of various results has indicated the effectiveness of the proposed model in capturing the aforesaid characterizing features of uncertain inputs. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
