    An experimental investigation of the sound level produced by bulldozers with various maintenance schedules

    This study was made to understand and evaluate the effect of maintenance on noise production from bulldozers through experimental measurements of sound levels in a large open cast mine. Assessment of sound pressure levels at each periodic maintenance interval revealed that maximum sound level reduction was achieved at 1000 h maintenance schedule. For other periodic maintenance intervals, reduction in A-weighted sound pressure level was below 1.0 dB. The study revealed that primarily, the major noise-generating systems in Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) are air, exhaust, cooling and fuel systems. However, maintenance of lubricant, transmission and hydraulic systems yielded no significant improvements in sound levels. Results also indicated sound level emissions from various systems to lie in different frequency ranges. © 2008, Inderscience Publishers.

    Radiations from double notched square patch antenna on FR4 substrate

    This paper presents the radiation performance of a square patch antenna having two triangular notches on opposite edges designed on glass epoxy FR4 substrate and its performance is compared with a simple square patch antenna without any notch. The simulated results for this antenna are obtained by varying notch angle and compared with the measured results. The results indicate that square patch antenna with both notch angles equal to 168o resonates not only at two different frequencies but also offers a much higher bandwidth in comparison to a normal square patch (without notches). Both these resonance frequencies lie in the median band (3.25 to 3.85 GHz) allotted by IEEE 802.16 working group for WiMAX systems. The performance of antenna is optimized considering different conditions to obtain an antenna with dual band and high bandwidth performance. The radiation patterns, gain and radiation efficiency of antenna are also determined. © 2008 SBMO/SBMag.

    Electrical and magnetic properties of chitosan-magnetite nanocomposites

    Magnetite powders in nanometer size have been synthesized by the hydrothermal process. Various magnetic films of chitosan and the synthesized magnetite nanopowders containing different concentrations of the latter were prepared by ultrasonication route. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the synthesized magnetite particles had 80 nm dimensions. The band gap of the composites was evaluated using the UV-visible Spectroscopy. The influence of magnetite content on the magnetic properties of the composite showed a decrease in the saturation magnetization with the decrease in the magnetic content. The effect of magnetite content on the dielectric properties of the polymer film at different frequencies from 0.01 to 105 Hz was studied using an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The possible mechanism for the observed electrical properties of the composite films was discussed. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
