Item Simulation of laminar flow in a three-dimensional lid-driven cavity by lattice Boltzmann method(2009) De, S.; Nagendra, K.; Lakshmisha, K.N.Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to apply lattice Boltzmann equation method (LBM) with multiple relaxation time (MRT) model, to investigate lid-driven flow in a three-dimensional (3D), rectangular cavity, and compare the results with flow in an equivalent two-dimensional (2D) cavity. Design/methodology/approach: The second-order MRT model is implemented in a 3D LBM code. The flow structure in cavities of different aspect ratios (0.25-4) and Reynolds numbers (0.01- 1000) is investigated. The LBM simulation results are compared with those from numerical solution of Navier-Stokes (NS) equations and with available experimental data. Findings: The 3D simulations demonstrate that 2D models may predict the flow structure reasonably well at low Reynolds numbers, but significant differences with experimental data appear at high Reynolds numbers. Such discrepancy between 2D and 3D results are attributed to the effect of boundary layers near the side-walls in transverse direction (in 3D), due to which the vorticity in the core-region is weakened in general. Secondly, owing to the vortex stretching effect present in 3D flow, the vorticity in the transverse plane intensifies whereas that in the lateral plane decays, with increase in Reynolds number. However, on the symmetry-plane, the flow structure variation with respect to cavity aspect ratio is found to be qualitatively consistent with results of 2D simulations. Secondary flow vortices whose axis is in the direction of the lid-motion are observed; these are weak at low Reynolds numbers, but become quite strong at high Reynolds numbers. Originality/value: The findings will be useful in the study of variety of enclosed fluid flows.© Emerald Group Publishing Limited.Item Development of anti-corrosive multi-layered coatings of zinc-nickel alloy(2011) Subbaiah, Y.; Kaje, V.; Hegde, A.C.Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop and optimize anti-corrosive multi-layered coatings of zinc-nickel alloy on carbon steel. Design/methodology/approach: A variety of composition-modulated multi-layer alloy (CMMA) coatings of zinc-nickel were developed on a carbon steel substrate by cyclic changes in cathode current during electrodeposition, coupled with variation of the thicknesses of the individual layers. The corrosion behavior of the coatings was studied in 5 percent NaCl solution by electrochemical methods. Cyclic cathode current densities (CCCDs) and the number of alloy layers were optimized for highest performance of the coatings against corrosion. The factors responsible for improved corrosion resistance were analyzed in terms of change in the intrinsic electrical properties of the capacitance value at the electrical double layer that was associated with micro/nanometric layering. The formation of the semi-conductive surface film, which was responsible for the improved corrosion resistance, was supported by a Mott-Schottky plot and the cyclic polarization study. The formation of multi-layered deposit and the mechanism of corrosion degradation of the coating were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. Findings: CMMA coatings with an optimal configuration of (Zn-Ni)2.0/4.0/300 showed ~35 times better corrosion resistance compared to a monolithic (Zn-Ni)3.0 alloy coating of the same thickness. The peak performance was attributed to the change in intrinsic electrical properties of the coating and this conclusion was supported by dielectric spectroscopy. Originality/value: The paper describes the optimization of CCCD and the number of deposited layers by development of electrolytic deposition of anti-corrosive multi-layered zinc-nickel coatings from a single plating technique. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.Item Corrosion inhibition of aluminum type 6061 Al-15 vol. pct. SiC(p) composite in 0.5-M sodium hydroxide solution by 4-amino-5-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd. Howard House Wagon Lane, Bingley BD16 1WA, 2014) Reena Kumari, P.D.; Nayak, J.; Nityananda Shetty, A.Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to report the studies on the corrosion inhibition property of 4-amino-5-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (APTT) for the corrosion of 6061 Al-15 vol. pct. SiC(p) composite. Design/methodology/approach: The corrosion behavior of 6061 Al-15 vol. pct. SiC(p) composite was studied at different temperatures in 0.5-M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution in the presence of APTT by potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic techniques. The effect of inhibitor concentration and temperature on the inhibitor effect of APTT was studied. The surface morphology of the metal surface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The activation parameters for the corrosion of the composite and base alloy, as well as the thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of APTT on the composite and alloy surfaces, were calculated. Findings: The inhibition efficiency of APTT increases with the increase in the concentration of the inhibitor and decreases with the increase in temperature. The adsorption of APTT on the composite was found to be through physisorption, obeying Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. APTT acts as a mixed inhibitor with predominant cathodic action on the composite. Practical implications: APTT can be used as an inhibitor for the corrosion of 6061 Al-15 vol. pct. SiC(p) composite in the NaOH medium. Originality/value: This paper provides information regarding the corrosion inhibition property of APTT on 6061 Al-15 vol. pct. SiC(p) composite. An attempt was made to explain the mechanism of the inhibition action by APTT. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.Item Performance of hybrid fibre-reinforced concretes at elevated temperatures(Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2017) Shirsath, S.K.; Yaragal, S.C.Purpose – This study reports the performance of thermally deteriorated concrete with and without fibres. Attempts have been made to find the suitable performance of steel polypropylene (PP) hybrid fibre combination that could significantly enhance the performance of mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Design/methodology/approach – In this experimental investigation, concrete cubes of 100 mm in size of various compositions were cast and water-cured for 28 days, and later exposed to elevated temperatures of either 200 or 400°C or 600 and or 800°C with a retention period of 2 h. The properties like change in colour and percentage weight loss were evaluated. Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity test was used to obtain qualitative information of strength variation. Residual strength of thermally deteriorated concrete specimen was measured by destructive testing. Findings – Steel fibre volume fraction of 1 per cent improves the compressive strength of concrete in the temperature range of 400 to 800°C. The addition of steel fibre and PP fibre (Mix 3) improves the splitting strength of the concrete at elevated temperature range of 400 to 600°C. Originality/value – Performance enhancement is observed with hybrid fibres for temperature endurance of concrete. © Emerald Publishing Limited.Item Engine gearbox fault diagnosis using machine learning approach(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd. Howard House Wagon Lane, Bingley BD16 1WA, 2018) Vernekar, K.; Kumar, H.; Gangadharan, K.V.Purpose: Bearings and gears are major components in any rotatory machines and, thus, gained interest for condition monitoring. The failure of such critical components may cause an increase in down time and maintenance cost. Condition monitoring using the machine learning approach is a conceivable solution for the problem raised during the operation of the machinery system. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach: This paper aims engine gearbox fault diagnosis based on a decision tree and artificial neural network algorithm. Findings: The experimental result (classification accuracy 85.55 percent) validates that the proposed approach is an effective method for engine gearbox fault diagnosis. Originality/value: This paper attempts to diagnose the faults in engine gearbox based on the machine learning approach with the combination of statistical features of vibration signals, decision tree and multi-layer perceptron neural network techniques. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.Item Core recovery: a damage diagnosis tool for thermally deteriorated concrete(Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2019) Kulkarni, K.S.; Yaragal, S.C.; S.k, B.N.Purpose: This paper aims to study and assess residual strengths of concrete specimen exposed to elevated temperatures by core recovery tests. Design/methodology/approach: The appraisal of concrete structures is typically carried out by means of partially destructive tests such as tests on concrete cores taken from the structure and non-destructive testing. Findings: This paper presents results associated with determination of residual compressive strengths of plain and reinforced concrete elements exposed to elevated temperatures by core recovery test. Physical observations and results of compressive strengths of cores extracted from plain cement concrete, as well as from reinforced concrete beam elements exposed to elevated temperatures, have been presented. Originality/value: The empirical relations have been proposed between standard cube and core extracted for compressive strength of concretes exposed to elevated temperatures are useful for damage diagnosis. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.Item 3D coupled conduction-convection problem using in-house heat transfer experiments in conjunction with hybrid inverse approach(Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2019) Vishweshwara, P.S.; Kumar, M.K.; Gnanasekaran, N.; Mahalingam, A.Purpose: Many a times, the information about the boundary heat flux is obtained only through inverse approach by locating the thermocouple or temperature sensor in accessible boundary. Most of the work reported in literature for the estimation of unknown parameters is based on heat conduction model. Inverse approach using conjugate heat transfer is found inadequate in literature. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to develop a 3D conjugate heat transfer model without model reduction for the estimation of heat flux and heat transfer coefficient from the measured temperatures. Design/methodology/approach: A 3 D conjugate fin heat transfer model is solved using commercial software for the known boundary conditions. Navier–Stokes equation is solved to obtain the necessary temperature distribution of the fin. Later, the complete model is replaced with neural network to expedite the computations of the forward problem. For the inverse approach, genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are applied to estimate the unknown parameters. Eventually, a hybrid algorithm is proposed by combining PSO with Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS) method that outperforms GA and PSO. Findings: The authors demonstrate that the evolutionary algorithms can be used to obtain accurate results from simulated measurements. Efficacy of the hybrid algorithm is established using real time measurements. The hybrid algorithm (PSO-BFGS) is more efficient in the estimation of unknown parameters for experimentally measured temperature data compared to GA and PSO algorithms. Originality/value: Surrogate model using ANN based on computational fluid dynamics simulations and in-house steady state fin experiments to estimate the heat flux and heat transfer coefficient separately using GA, PSO and PSO-BFGS. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.Item Developing a knowledge-based safety culture instrument for construction industry: Reliability and validity assessment in Indian context(Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2019) Deepak, M.D.; Mahesh, G.Purpose: Harnessing the power of knowledge management is important for minimizing accidents occurring at construction projects. Yet, knowledge management is a neglected dimension when developing safety culture in the construction industry. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to develop a knowledge-based safety culture questionnaire and examine its validity and reliability in the Indian context. Design/methodology/approach: A questionnaire survey was formulated after identifying 69 influencing factors from a thorough literature review. In total, 210 valid responses were obtained from key stakeholders operating in Indian construction industry. Reliability and validity of the measurement scale were examined by factor analysis and inter-item correlation test. Comparison of knowledge-based safety culture scores across several demographic profiles of the respondents was utilized for testing discriminant validity. Findings: Results suggest that the new instrument appears to be a reliable, valid and sensitive instrument that will contribute in examining the effect of key factors that influence the importance of the knowledge dimension toward developing safety culture in the construction industry. Originality/value: The measurement tool developed in this study focuses on considering the importance of knowledge management in enhancing safety culture of the construction industry. This instrument can be utilized to compare the level of safety culture among key stakeholders of construction projects. This paper can contribute to the promotion of safety theory in Indian construction industry and provide practical implications for construction enterprises when they engage in improving safety conditions in their organizations. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.Item Fault diagnosis of internal combustion engine gearbox using vibration signals based on signal processing techniques(Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2020) Kn, R.; Kumar, H.; Gn, K.; Kv, G.Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the fault diagnosis of internal combustion (IC) engine gearbox using vibration signals with signal processing and machine learning (ML) techniques. Design/methodology/approach: Vibration signals from the gearbox are acquired for healthy and induced faulty conditions of the gear. In this study, 50% tooth fault and 100% tooth fault are chosen as gear faults in the driver gear. The acquired signals are processed and analyzed using signal processing and ML techniques. Findings: The obtained results show that variation in the amplitude of the crankshaft rotational frequency (CRF) and gear mesh frequency (GMF) for different conditions of the gearbox with various load conditions. ML techniques were also employed in developing the fault diagnosis system using statistical features. J48 decision tree provides better classification accuracy about 85.1852% in identifying gearbox conditions. Practical implications: The proposed approach can be used effectively for fault diagnosis of IC engine gearbox. Spectrum and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) provide better information about gear fault conditions using time–frequency characteristics. Originality/value: In this paper, experiments are conducted on real-time running condition of IC engine gearbox while considering combustion. Eddy current dynamometer is attached to output shaft of the engine for applying load. Spectrum, cepstrum, short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and wavelet analysis are performed. Spectrum, cepstrum and CWT provide better information about gear fault conditions using time–frequency characteristics. ML techniques were used in analyzing classification accuracy of the experimental data to detect the gearbox conditions using various classifiers. Hence, these techniques can be used for detection of faults in the IC engine gearbox and other reciprocating/rotating machineries. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.Item Dimensions for improvement of construction management practice in Ethiopian construction industry(Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2020) Mengistu, D.G.; Mahesh, G.Purpose: The state of the different practices in construction industry determines its performance level. Hence, improving performance of construction industry needs assessing state of the practices in the industry and devising improvement intervention. The purpose of this paper is to measure improvement requirement level of different construction management practice areas and to identify the underlying improvement dimensions in Ethiopian construction industry. Design/methodology/approach: Questionnaire survey was developed for data collection based on a thorough literature review which yielded 28 construction management practice areas. Purposive sampling method was used to select respondents for the survey. Mean score was used to identify the required improvement level, and one sample T-test was carried out to identify significance of improvement requirement. Factor analysis was conducted to identify the underlying dimensions of the construction management practice areas. Findings: Findings indicate 27 areas need significant improvement. This shows the low level of adoption of good construction management practices in Ethiopian construction industry. Factor analysis resulted in the areas being grouped to four broad improvement dimensions, namely, project management, organization management, knowledge and risk management and project development and contract management. Originality/value: The findings provide information for appropriate action by the stakeholders to raise standards of adopted construction management practices. It also show areas of construction management which require more focused research in the context of Ethiopian construction industry. Considering the similarity of nature of construction industry problems in developing countries, the findings can be extended to similar countries. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.
