Item Third-order nonlinear optical studies of newly synthesized polyoxadiazoles containing 3,4-dialkoxythiophenes(2006) Udayakumar, D.; John Kiran, A.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.; Chandrasekharan, K.; Umesh, G.; Shashikala, H.D.The third-order nonlinear optical properties of newly synthesized soluble polyoxadiazoles containing 3,4-dialkoxythiophenes were investigated by using Z-scan and degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) techniques. The measurements were performed at 532 nm with 7 ns pulses from a Nd:YAG laser. We found a good agreement between the values of ?(3) determined from both the experiments. Z-scan results indicate a negative nonlinear refractive index, n2, whose magnitude is of the order of 10-10 esu for all the copolymers. The variation of nonlinear response among the copolymers clearly indicates the dependence of ?(3) on donor and acceptor type of units present in these copolymers. The copolymers exhibit strong reverse saturable absorption and good optical limiting properties at 532 nm. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The polymerization was carried out using chemical polymerization technique. The optical and charge-transporting property of the copolymer was investigated by UV-vis, fluorescence emission spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric studies. The copolymer shows UV absorption maxima at 375 nm and displays bluish-green fluorescence in DMF solution. Its electrochemical band gap was determined to be 2.07 eV. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the copolymer was investigated at 532 nm using single beam Z-scan and degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) techniques with nanosecond laser pulses. The copolymer exhibits strong optical limiting behavior due to effective three-photon absorption (3PA). Values of the effective 3PA coefficient (?), third-order nonlinear susceptibility (?(3)) and figure of merit (F) have been calculated. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. The structure of newly synthesized polymer was confirmed by FT-IR, 1H NMR, UV-vis spectral, elemental analysis and gel permeation chromatographic techniques. The polymer exhibited good thermal stability with the onset decomposition temperature around 320 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. Further, its electrochemical, linear and nonlinear optical properties have been investigated. The optical and electrochemical band gap was found to be 2.21 eV. Its third-order nonlinear optical property was investigated by Z-scan and DFWM techniques, using a Q-switched, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser producing 7 ns laser pulses at 532 nm. Z-scan results reveal that the polymer exhibits self-defocusing nonlinearity. The operating mechanism involves reverse saturable absorption. The polymer shows strong optical limiting behavior due to effective two-photon absorption (2PA). The value of 2PA coefficient was found to be 3.0 × 10-11 mW, which is comparable to that of good optical limiting materials. The fluorescence quantum yield of the polymer in solution was determined using quinine sulfate as standard and it was found to be 35%. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The compound shows self-defocusing effect. Its nonlinear refractive index, third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility and the second-order hyperpolarizability are seen to be of the order of 10-9, 10-10 and 10-30 esu respectively. The nonlinear absorption coefficient is of the order of 10 -9 m/W. This material exhibits good optical power limiting capability which is seen to occur due to reverse saturable absorption. Experiments on all-optical switching action indicate that the sample can function as an optical inverter or a NOT gate. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The Ru complex was doped in a polymer matrix to fabricate films using a low-cost spin-coating technique. The third-order nonlinear optical parameters of the complex were investigated by Z-scan and degenerate four-wave mixing techniques. The study reveals two-order enhancement of third-order optical susceptibility ? (3) and exhibits superior limiting capability due to a reverse saturable absorption process. All-optical switching action for the films indicates that the sample can function as an optical inverter or a NOT gate. Hence, the Ru (II) Schiff-base complex materializes as a possible candidate for use in nonlinear optical devices. © 2017 Astro Ltd.Item Optical nonlinearity, limiting and switching characteristics of novel ruthenium metal-organic complex(Elsevier B.V., 2017) Manjunatha, K.B.; Rajarao, R.; Umesh, G.; Badekai Ramachandra, B.R.; Poornesh, P.We report the nonlinear optical properties of Ruthenium metal complex a promising organic material for use in scientific and technological applications. The thin films of newly synthesized ruthenium metal–organic complex were fabricated using spin coating technique. Z-scan and degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) techniques used to extract the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) parameters. The data reveals the investigated material exhibited relatively large NLO properties. The pump–probe experiments shows that the switch-on and off times of the material were in the order of ?s at different pump intensities and the energy dependent transmission studies reveal good limiting property of the material in nanosecond regime. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.
