Item This paper deals with the cost analysis of a two-unit repairable system subject to on-line preventive maintenance (on-line PM) and/or repair. The policy adopted here is that the on-line PM work of the operating unit is undertaken first on its completion, the repair work of the failed unit, if any, is subsequently carried out. All the random variables that arise in the analysis are assumed to be independently and arbitrarily distributed. An expression for the expected total cost incurred by the system in a specified time interval is obtained by considering the expected busy period of the server spent on various actions. Fragmentation obtained in the blasting process influences the downstream costs like loading cost, transportation cost, processing cost, etc. Among the various factors which influence the rock fragmentation, initiation system is one of the most important because presently much research is going on in this area of rock blasting. Some field studies were taken up with conventional detonating cord initiation and shock-tube-based NONEL initiation systems to study the influence of initiation systems on rock fragmentation. Fragmentation analysis was done using the boulder count method and image analysis. Membrane technologies have been widely applied in the separation of liquids and even gases. Many separation problems can be solved economically by nanofiltration alone or in combination with other separation processes. This study aimed to synthesize polysulfone based nanofiltration membranes using DIPS (diffusion induced phase separation) technique. Newly synthesized polymer membranes were subjected to Infra red spectral and water uptake studies. Membranes were also characterized using electrochemical spectroscopy for their proton conducting property. Since dynamic pricing of call rates is beneficial from both the perspectives of subscribers and service providers, our solution can significantly help to adapt this pricing mechanism in real market scenario. In order to deploy this scheme, we have incorporated the competing network provider's strategy into the mechanism of deciding dynamic price. Establishment of Nash equilibrium with the competing network provider has stabilized our pricing mechanism. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.Item Morphological and structural characterisation of sol-gel electrospun Co3O4 nanofibres and their electro-catalytic behaviour(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2015) George, G.; Elias, L.; Hegde, A.C.; Anandhan, S.Evolution of hydrogen and oxygen are a crucial part of many renewable energy systems. The replacement of the essential and expensive components in such systems can reduce the capital cost and improve the effectiveness of those systems. In this study, Co3O4 nanofibres were fabricated from sol-gel assisted electrospun poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile)/cobalt acetate tetrahydrate precursor composite fibres. The morphological and compositional features of the Co3O4 nanofibres obtained after calcination of the precursor nanofibers were studied using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results of X-ray diffraction study and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the average grain size of the fibres increased with the calcination temperature. Clear evidence of defects in the fibres was observed in ultraviolet-visible-near infrared and energy dispersive spectroscopic measurements. The electrocatalytic behaviour of Co3O4 nanofibres obtained at different calcination temperatures was studied using them for the water splitting reaction in an alkaline medium. The maximum efficiency in the hydrogen evolution reaction was achieved using the Co3O4 nanofibres obtained at the lowest calcination temperature, which had the highest surface area and the smallest grain size. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015.Item Effects of energy price rise on investment: Firm level evidence from Indian manufacturing sector(Elsevier, 2015) Sadath, A.C.; Rajesh Acharya, H.R.This paper analyses the effects of the rising prices of energy products on the investment of a large panel of manufacturing firms in India during 1993-2013. The prime motivation behind this study is the absence of an empirical study into this research issue exclusively on Indian economy. The empirical results obtained by estimating an Error Correction Model (ECM) using Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) show that energy price rise has negative effect on the investment of firms in the manufacturing sector. The negative effect is transmitted to the firm's investment through both demand-side and supply-side factors. The transmission also depends upon factors such as the energy intensity of production. The results also show that the sales-growth-investment relationship becomes weak in the face of the rising prices of the energy which could be due to the cautious approach to investment adopted by the firms. Therefore, it calls for the attention of the policy makers to evolve a comprehensive energy-policy to ensure continuous supply of energy at affordable prices to the manufacturers. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.Item Low cost Fenton's oxidative degradation of 4-nitroaniline using iron from laterite(IWA Publishing 12 Caxton Street London SW1H 0QS, 2016) Amritha, A.S.; Manu, B.The present study aims to establish the use of iron (Fe) from larerite in the case of Fenton's oxidation process which is a simple and cost-effective method for degradation of nitro compounds in effluents and in surface or ground water. 4-nitroaniline (4-NA) degradation by Fenton's oxidation method is the subject of the present study so as to optimize pH, hydrogen peroxide/iron (H/F) ratio at different initial concentrations of 4-NA. The optimum pH obtained was 3. The present study has also established optimum H/F ratio for the different initial concentrations of 4-NA for both conventional and use of Fe from laterite. The maximum removal efficiency of 99.84% was obtained for an H/F ratio of 100 for 0.5 mM initial concentration of 4-NA. The study establishes the use of Fe extracted from locally available laterite soil (LS) as a replacement of Fe salts so as to reduce the cost of the process. © 2016 IWA Publishing.Item Implications of energy subsidy reform in India(Elsevier Ltd, 2017) Rajesh Acharya, R.H.; Sadath, A.C.This paper analyses welfare impact of energy subsidy reform in India based on the data from 1970? 71 to 2014? 15. To this end, Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model and Error Correction Model (ECM) have been estimated to quantify the short-run and long-run price and the income elasticity of various energy products. The results show that the price elasticity of demand for all fossil fuels is low, but the respective income elasticity is higher. Therefore, an increase in the general price level caused by the subsidy reform will lead to the erosion of real income and will have related welfare implications in India. The results also reveal that energy expenditure will obviously increase and hence energy consumption will decline depending upon the extent of the withdrawal of subsidy. Therefore, policy makers in India, while undertaking further reforms, must ensure that the subsidy reaches to those who truly deserve, so that the socioeconomic casualty of reforms can be minimized along with achieving fiscal goals. © 2016 Elsevier LtdItem Ranking and comparison of draw solutes in a forward osmosis process(Techno Press technop2@chollian.net, 2017) Girijan, G.; Thalla, A.K.Forward osmosis (FO) is an emerging technology which can possibly make the desalination process more cost and energy efficient. One of the major factors impeding its growth is the lack of an appropriate draw solute. The present study deals with the identification of potential draw solutes, and rank them. The comparison was carried out among ten draw solutes on the basis of four main parameters namely; water flux, reverse salt diffusion, flux recovery and cost. Each draw solute was given three 24 hour runs; corresponding to three different concentrations; and their flux and reverse salt diffusion values were calculated. A fresh membrane was used every time except for the fourth time which was the flux recovery experiment conducted for the lowest concentration and the change of flux and reverse salt diffusion values from the initial run was noted. The organic solutes inspected were urea and tartaric acid which showed appreciable values in other parameters viz. reverse salt diffusion, flux recovery and cost although they generated a lower flux. They ranked 5th and 8th respectively. All the experimented draw solutes were ranked based on their values corresponding to each of the four main parameters chosen for comparison and Ammonium sulfate was found to be the best draw solute. © 2017 Techno-Press, Ltd.
