Hydraulic and compaction characteristics of leachate-contaminated lateritic soil
    (2007) Nayak, S.; Sunil, B.M.; Shrihari, S.
Large quantities of leachate-contaminated lateritic soil results from dump yards in the southwest coast of India. These dump yards receive large quantities of municipal solid waste which includes chemical, industrial and biomedical wastes. Large areas of land are currently being used for this purpose. An extensive laboratory testing program was carried out to determine the compaction characteristics and hydraulic conductivity of clean and contaminated lateritic soil. Batch tests were used to study the immediate effect of leachate contamination on the properties of lateritic soil. Contaminated specimens were prepared by mixing the lateritic soil with leachate in the amount of 5%, 10% and 20% by weight to vary the degree of contamination. The results indicated a small reduction in maximum dry density and an increase in hydraulic conductivity due to leachate-contamination. The change induced by chemical reaction in the microstructure of the soil was studied by scanning electron microscope before and after contamination of soil with leachate. The structure of the leachate contaminated soil sample appeared to be aggregated in scanning electron microscope analysis. The aggregated structure increases the effective pore space and thus increases the hydraulic conductivity. Fifty percent increase in hydraulic conductivity was observed for specimens prepared at standard Proctor density and mixed with 20% leachate. Compaction characteristics did not change much with the presence of leachate up to 10%. With 20% leachate the maximum dry density decreased slightly indicating excess leachate in the soil. However the changes are not significant. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Design and synthesis of new donor-acceptor type conjugated copolymers derived from thiophenes
    (2009) Manjunatha, M.G.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.; Hegde, P.K.
A new series of donor-acceptor type poly(thiophene) derivatives (P1-P3) were synthesized starting from thiodiglycolic acid and diethyl oxalate through multistep reactions. In the final step, the polymerization was carried out using Wittig reaction. This is a good synthetic route for the preparation of any desired p- and n-type copolymers. The optical and potential charge-transporting properties of the copolymers were investigated by UV-vis, fluorescence emission spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The copolymers exhibited bluish-green/green fluorescence in their thin film forms. Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that these copolymers have low-lying LUMO energy levels ranging from -2.98 to -3.11 eV and high lying HOMO energy levels ranging from -5.45 to -5.65 eV. The optical and electrochemical studies reveal that new copolymers are new promising materials for the development of efficient polymer light emitting diodes. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Influence of redmud on the mechanical, damping and chemical resistance properties of banana/polyester hybrid composites
    (Elsevier Ltd, 2014) Veerasimman, V.; Marimuthu, M.; Manikandan, V.; Nagarajan, N.; Jeyaraj, P.
A novel hybrid composite was developed with the addition of redmud as secondary reinforcing filler with banana fiber reinforced polyester composites (BFRPCs). The effect of varying parameters such as particle size (4, 6 and 13. ?m) and weight percentage (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. wt%) of redmud were analyzed on static mechanical, free vibration and chemical resistance properties of hybrid composites. The addition of redmud shown enhanced performance compared to the virgin BFRPCs in all the above said properties. The maximum increase of 50% in mechanical strength was observed for the BFRPCs with the addition of redmud having 4. ?m particle size and 8. wt% of filler content compared to pure BFRPCs. The increased value of fundamental natural frequencies with associated modal damping characteristics of redmud filled BFRPCs were found using half-power band width method. All the fabricated composites performed well against various chemicals and it indicates that the resistance to the weight loss is due to the uniformly distributed redmud. To study the effect of redmud on interfacial bonding between the banana fiber and polyester matrix the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image analysis was performed. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Microwave assisted synthesis of bithiophene based donor-acceptor-donor oligomers and their optoelectronic performances
    (Elsevier B.V., 2017) Bathula, C.; Buruga, K.; Lee, S.K.; Khazi, I.A.M.; Kang, Y.
In this article we present the synthesis of two novel bithiophene based symmetrical ? conjugated oligomers with donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structures by microwave assisted PdCl2(dppf) catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. These molecules contain electron rich bithiophene as a donor, dithienothiadiazole[3,4-c]pyridine and phthalic anhydride units as acceptors. The shorter reaction time, excellent yields and easy product isolation are the advantages of this method. The photophysical prerequisites for electronic application such as strong and broad optical absorption, thermal stability, and compatible energy levels were determined for synthesized oligomers. Optical band gap for the oligomers is found to be 1.72–1.90 eV. The results demonstrated the novel oligomers to be promising candidates in organic optoelectronic applications. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Green synthesis of palladium nanoparticles using fenugreek tea and their catalytic applications in organic reactions
    (Elsevier B.V., 2017) Mallikarjuna, K.; Bathula, C.; Buruga, K.; Shrestha, N.K.; Noh, Y.-Y.; Kim, H.
In this communication, we present the fenugreek tea aided green synthesis of Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs@FT). The synthesized PdNPs were characterized by UV–Visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), small area electron diffraction (SAED), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). FT-IR manifested that polyol and amide groups present in fenugreek may have participated in the synthesis of palladium nanoparticles. PdNPs@FT exhibited high catalytic activity towards hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. PdNPs@FT catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction between bromobenzene and phenyl boronic acid gave desired biphenyl in excellent yield. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Cobalt Schiff Base Immobilized on a Graphene Nanosheet with N, O Linkage for Cross-Coupling Reaction
(American Chemical Society, 2019) Saroja, A.; Badekai Ramachandra, B.R.
A simple and direct pathway to synthesize heterogeneous catalyst by covalently immobilizing a cobalt Schiff base complex on the surface of amino functionalized graphene oxide for the cross coupling of aryl halides and arylboronic acids is reported. The as synthesized samples were characterized using various spectroscopic techniques and thermal analysis to attain their structural and functional features. The analysis confirmed that the Co bounded to the ligand using bi(N, O) linkage and the Co Schiff base complex immobilized onto the functionalized graphene oxide through its amino moiety. The catalytic investigation confirmed the product yield up to 96.5% for the Suzuki cross coupling using gas chromatography. ICP analysis shows that the central active metal is 85% in its catalyst even after the fifth iteration. High product yield, environmentally benign, easy workup, easy filtration of catalyst, and mild reaction conditions are the main facets of this catalyst. © Copyright 2018 American Chemical Society.
