Item Third order nonlinear optical properties and optical limiting in donor/acceptor substituted 4'-methoxy chalcone derivatives(2007) Ravindra, H.J.; John Kiran, A.; Chandrasekharan, K.; Shashikala, H.D.; Dharmaprakash, S.M.The third order nonlinear optical properties of 4'-methoxy chalcone and its derivatives have been investigated using a single-beam Z-scan technique with nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. The 4'-methoxy chalcone and its derivatives are donor-acceptor-acceptor (D-A-A) and donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type intramolecular charge transfer molecules. The nonlinear response in these molecules was found to increase with increase in (a) the electron acceptor strength in D-A-A type and (b) the donor strength of the substituted group in D-A-D type molecules. The ?(3) value in these molecules is found to be of the order of 10-13 esu. The observed increase in the third order nonlinearity in these molecules clearly indicates the electronic origin. The compounds exhibit good optical limiting at 532 nm. The best optical limiting behavior was observed with the molecule substituted by a strong electron donor. © Springer-Verlag 2007.Item Ultrafast nonlinear optical properties of dye-doped PMMA discs irradiated by 40 fs laser pulses(2009) Xia, Y.; Jiang, Y.; Fan, R.; Dong, Z.; Zhao, W.; Chen, D.; Umesh, G.The two-photon absorption (TPA) characteristics of PMMA discs doped with three different dyes were studied using an fs-pulsed Ti-Sapphire laser as the pump source, and employing the open-aperture Z-scan technique. TPA cross-sections obtained for PMMA doped with the dyes PM597, DCM and rhodamine 6G-rhodamine B (co-doped) were found to be equal to 24.7, 33.3 and 32.3 GM, respectively (1 GM=10-50 cm4 s phot-1 mol-1). Furthermore, two-photon fluorescence was measured for the samples containing DCM and rhodamine 6G-rhodamine B (co-doped). Compared to the one-photon fluorescence spectrum, the peaks in the two-photon fluorescence spectrum were red shifted and the extent of red shift increased with increasing doping concentration. We have also observed that the red shift in the two-photon fluorescence peak of the samples in the solid form is much larger than that in the solution state. This phenomenon could be explained by a twisted intra-molecular charge transfer model. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The obtained films have been characterised by XRD and FESEM. The electrical properties of the films are examined by impedance spectroscopy in the temperature range 303-343 K. The impedance plot of the films pronounces the role of temperature in charge-transfer resistance of the composite. Frequency as well as temperature dependencies of dielectric constant and dielectric loss exhibit the general trend followed by carrier dominated dielectrics. Electric modulus parameters give an insight on the ionic conductivity and relaxation phenomena of the composite films. The dielectric parameters along with modulus data have been exploited to discuss the conduction mechanism in the material. The minimum activation energy of 3.9 kJ mol -1 and maximum room temperature conductivity of 1.94 × 10 -2 S cm-1 were found for composite film with 8% Co 3O4 content. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The receptors L1 and L2 are highly selective towards fluoride ion over other anions. These receptors are able to detect inorganic fluoride such as NaF in aqueous solutions. The presence of two carbonyl groups in the receptor molecule makes the -NH proton highly acidic and hence these receptors are capable of competing with water molecules to bind fluoride ion. The receptors L1 and L2 showed a significant colour change from colourless to yellow in aqueous solutions of NaF with a ??max of 149 nm and 147 nm respectively. The mechanism involved in the colour change was deprotonation, formation of imidic acid intermediate followed by stabilization of complex through Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT). This was further confirmed by 1H NMR titrations where the formation of imidic acid was observed. The receptor L1 proved itself to be potentially useful for real-life applications by detecting fluoride ion quantitatively in sea water and commercially available mouth wash. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry.Item Plant root nodule like nickel-oxide-multi-walled carbon nanotube composites for non-enzymatic glucose sensors(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2015) Prasad, R.; Gorjizadeh, N.; Rajarao, R.; Sahajwalla, V.; Badekai Ramachandra, B.R.Herein, in this work we synthesized plant root nodule like NiO-MWCNT nanocomposites by a simple, rapid and solvent-free method using nickel formate as a precursor. Using a first-principle simulation study the interactions and charge transfer behaviour of the NiO and MWCNT composite is investigated. The as-prepared NiO-MWCNT composite is employed to fabricate a modified non-enzymatic carbon paste electrode (CPE) for glucose sensing. From the electrochemical investigation, the fabricated sensor shows an excellent sensitivity of 6527 ?A mM-1 cm-2 with a detection limit of 19 ?M and a linear response over a range from 0.001 mM to 14 mM of glucose concentrations, at an applied potential of 0.5 V. Importantly the sensor also exhibits greater stability, selectivity and reproducibility. A first principle simulation study shows the differences in charge density and charge transfer behaviour from nanotubes to NiO nanoparticles, which in turn enhances the electro catalytic property of the NiO-MWCNT composite. Hence, these results indicate that the NiO-MWCNT composite is a potential material for non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. The agglomeration state and charge on the particles in plating condition were analyzed by zeta potential and particle size distribution measurements. The change in microstructure and morphology in composite coatings was analyzed by x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray diffraction, and Scanning electron microscopic analyses. The corrosion behavior of the coatings was tested by electrochemical methods such as Tafel polarization and Electrochemical Impedance study. The increased charge transfer resistance with reduced corrosion rate was observed for composite coatings compared to pure zinc coating. The morphology and corrosion behavior of the composite coatings are correlated with pure zinc coating properties. © 2015, ASM International.Item Investigation of hole transport in ?-NPD using impedance spectroscopy with F4TCNQ as hole-injection layer(Academic Press, 2015) Fernandes, J.M.; Raveendra Kiran, M.R.; Ulla, H.; Satyanarayan, M.N.; Umesh, G.The charge carrier transport is studied in N,N?-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N?-diphenyl-(1,1?-biphenyl)-4,4?-diamine (?-NPD) with the incorporation of sequentially doped p-type dopant 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ) as hole-injection layer in hole-only device structures. The field dependent mobility of the charge carriers is determined using frequency dependent capacitance, conductance and impedance methods by varying the thickness of ?-NPD. The Poole-Frenkel zero-field mobility and the Poole-Frenkel coefficient thus obtained for each device in all the three methods is found to be almost constant. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, we report the fabrication and electrical characterization of two diodes ITO/VOPc/MoO3/Al and ITO/VOPc/Al. We investigate the electrical conduction of Vanadyl phthalocyanine (VOPc) in both the devices and also the effect of MoO3 as a buffer layer. Improvement of current density through the device is estimated using current density - voltage characteristics and capacitance - voltage characteristics. Space charge limited current (SCLC) conduction with an exponential trap distribution is observed from Impedance measurements. The dominant hopping charge transport is discussed based on ac conductivity measurements and by adopting Correlated barrier hopping (CBH) model. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. In reflection of this fact, an effort has been made to synthesize 5% barium doped zinc oxide nanoparticles and was characterized by using XRD, EDX, SEM, and TEM. Further, 5% barium doped zinc oxide nanoparticle modified glassy carbon electrode was used for investigating the electro-chemical behavior of nimesulide. Voltammograms obtained in a range of 3.0-11.2 (I = 0.2 M) pH had a maximum peak current at pH 7.0. Various physio-chemical parameters such as, process on the surface of the electrode, which was found to be diffusion controlled, heterogeneous rate constant, number of electrons transferred and charge transfer coefficient were estimated. Further, a method for nimesulide determination in a linear range of 1.0 × 10- 5 to 1.0 × 10- 7 M with LOD 1.794 nM was proposed. This technique was later used for analytical application. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The conjugated segment in P1-P3 contains only five aromatic rings resulting in short conjugation length, but has an alternate D-A arrangement which significantly enhances the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) interaction within the segment. As a result, these polymers exhibited low optical band gap in the range 2.51–2.76 eV. Fluorescence emission studies revealed that the polymer thin films emit intense blue light with emission maxima in the wavelength rage 430–480 nm. All three polymers undergo both oxidation and reduction processes under electrochemical conditions. Further, these polymers (P1–P3) exhibit low-lying HOMO and LUMO levels as a result of D-A structure of the conjugated segment. Polymer light-emitting devices were fabricated using these polymers as emissive layer with a device configuration of ITO/MoO 3/polymer/LiF/Al. The test device based on P2 emitted blue light with a low threshold voltage of 5 V. Z-scan studies reveal that the polymers exhibit a strong optical limiting behavior. The value of the nonlinear absorption coefficient (?) of polymers is of the order 10 ?11m/W which indicates that these materials may be accomplished for fabricating optical limiters.
