    Behaviour of large underground cavern during construction in himalayas - a case study

    Construction of large underground caverns in Himalayas is challenging due to complex geological and insitu stress conditions. Understanding the behaviour of such caverns during construction stage is possible only with extensive instrumentation. A case study of a large cavern under construction in Himalayan region in Bhutan is considered. Results from various types of instruments are discussed in this paper. Instrumentation data shows that Himalayan rock mass particularly with phyllitic quartzite exhibits large deformations thus requiring careful selection of support and excavation methodology. © 2014 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY.

    Rural nonfarm employment, income, and inequality: Evidence from Bhutan

    Using the 2012 Bhutan Living Standard Survey, this paper finds that rural nonfarmactivities comprise 60.7% of rural household income in Bhutan and this contribution increases with higher income and education levels. The poor and less educated participate less in the nonfarm sector.When they do, they are selfemployed in petty nonfarmactivities, which require little investment and little or no skills. Accounting for endogeneity and sample selection issues, we estimate the determinants of participation in nonfarm activities and nonfarm incomes. We find that a household’s education and labor supply play an important role in accessing more remunerative nonfarm employment. Interestingly, we find that women play an important role in self-employment in nonfarm activities. Decomposition shows that nonfarm income has a disequalizing effect and farm income has an equalizing effect, indicating the need to increase the endowment of poor households to enable them to access the lucrative rural nonfarm sector. Further decomposition reveals that self-employment in petty nonfarm activities reduces inequality. © 2015 Asian Development Bank and Asian Development Bank Institute.

    Deterministic seismic hazard analysis for Phuentsholing region of southern Bhutan considering local site effects

    Phuentsholing is a thriving border town in the southwestern part of Bhutan. With the development of infrastructure over time, the safety of the residence and lifeline buildings becomes a matter of concern. Bhutan lies in the Himalayan mountain ranges, which is considered one of the most active regions for seismic events. The Indian seismic code, IS 1893-2016, has assigned Zone IV for the region, which signifies the large risk that exists for all the structures. Therefore, conducting a seismic hazard assessment for the site becomes extremely necessary before any major construction. The present study focusses to perform the deterministic seismic hazard analysis (DSHA) around certain points of interest in the town of Phuentsholing, in Bhutan. Furthermore, site-specific response spectra for Pipaldhara-1, Pipaldhara-2, Kabreytar-1, Kabreytar-2 and Phuentsholing town were plotted from the results of the DSHA. It is estimated that a peak ground acceleration ranging from 0.11 to 0.14 g can be anticipated at the level of bedrock in the study region. Response spectra were plotted for the ground level using appropriate soil-amplification coefficients, derived from the analyses in the DEEPSOIL program. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
