Item Studies on nonlinear optical parameters of bis-chalcone derivatives doped polymer(Elsevier BV, 2006) Shettigar, S.; Chandrasekharan, K.; Umesh, G.; Sarojini, B.K.; Narayana, B.Two bis-chalcone derivatives, 1,5-[di(4-methoxyphenyl)]penta-1,4-dien-3-one and 1,5-[di(4-chlorophenyl)]penta-1,4-dien-3-one were synthesized. Their SHG conversion efficiencies are reported to be 6.0 and 5.0 times that of urea and hyper polarizabilities are 9.9×10-30 and 10.2×10-30 esu, respectively. The third-order nonlinear optical properties in PMMA matrix were studied by Z-scan technique using 7 ns laser pulses at 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive index ?, nonlinear absorption coefficient ?, magnitude of effective third order susceptibility ?(3) and the coupling factor ? have been investigated. The values obtained are of the order of 10-14 cm2/W, 1.2 cm/GW, 10-14 esu and 0.2, respectively, which are comparable with the values obtained in stilbazoleum like dyes. The experimental investigation also shows that they are very interesting optical limiting materials and their optical limiting behaviour is mainly due to two photon absorption phenomenon. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Films of PMMA-CA, and PMMA-CAP blends have been prepared by solution casting using Acetone and Dimethyl formamide(DMF) as solvents respectively. Biodegradability of these blends has been studied by four different methods namely, soil burial test, enzymatic degradation, and degradation in phosphate buffer and activated sludge degradation followed by water absorption tests to support the degradation studies. Degradation analysis was done by weight loss method. The results of all the tests showed sufficient biodegradability of these blends. Degradability increased with the increase in CA and CAP content in the blend compositions. The miscibility of PMMA-CA and PMMA-CAP blends have been studied by solution viscometric and ultrasonic methods. The results obtained reveal that PMMA forms miscible blends with either CA or CAP in the entire composition range. Miscibility of the blends may be due to the formation of hydrogen bond between the carbonyl group of PMMA and the free hydroxyl group of CA and CAP. © Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. 2006.Item Synthesis and nonlinear optical characterization of copolymers containing alternating 3,4-dialkoxythiophene and 1,3,4-oxadiazolydbenzene units(2007) Udayakumar, D.; Kiran, A.J.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.; Chandrasekharan, K.; Shashikala, H.D.We report the synthesis and linear and third-order nonlinear optical (NLP) characterization of two novel copolymers containing alternating 3,4-dialkoxythiophene and 1,4-bis(1,3,4-oxadiazolyl)benzene units. The copolymers were synthesized with a precursor polyhydrazide route. Both copolymers exhibited fluorescence around 430 nm under the irradiation of UV light. The NLO measurements were made with the single-beam Z-scan technique with Nd:YAG nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive index of the investigated copolymers was negative, and the magnitude was as high as 10 -10 esu. The samples exhibited strong reverse saturation absorption and very good optical limiting properties at the wavelength used. The concentration dependence of third-order NLO parameters was studied. ©2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Item Third-order nonlinear optical properties and two-photon absorption in polymers doped with p-phenyl sydnone(2008) Shettigar, S.; Umesh, G.; Chandrasekharan, K.; Rai, G.; Kalluraya, B.We report the measurements of the third-order susceptibilities and two-photon absorption in three different polymers doped with p-phenyl sydnone moiety viz., 2-benzylhydrazono-5-(3-p-tolylsydnone-4-yl)1,3,4,-thiadiazine, which is recently synthesized and characterized, with the prospective of reaching a good compromise between processability and high nonlinear optical properties. The measurements were done using nano second Z-scan at 532 nm. The Z-scan spectra reveal a large negative nonlinear refraction coefficient n 2 of the order 10-14 cm2/W and a two-photon absorption ?, which is determined to be the order of cm/GW. The absorption cross section is 10-46 cm4 s/photon. The molecular second-order hyperpolarizability in PMMA matrix was calculated to be 1.47 × 10-31 esu, comparable with stilbazolieum derivatives, a well-known class of optical materials for photonics and biophotonics applications. The chromophore shows its optical power limiting behavior in all the three polymer matrices. All these results suggest that this moiety has potential for the application of all-optical limiting and switching devices. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Item The third-order nonlinear optical properties of novel styryl dyes(2009) Shettigar, S.; Umesh, G.; Poornesh, P.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Asiri, A.M.The third-order nonlinear optical properties of two novel styryl dyes, namely, 1,3-diethyl-5-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione and 5-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)-1,3-diethyl-2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione were studied using the Z-scan technique employing 7 ns laser pulses at 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption coefficient, magnitude of effective third-order susceptibility and coupling factor were determined. The optical power limiting behavior of the colorants was ascribed to two-photon absorption phenomenon. Nonlinear absorption cross-section increased with increase in ? electron density and the effective two-photon absorption cross-section was two orders of magnitude larger than those of commercially available azo compounds. The results suggest that these colorants offer promise as nonlinear optical materials for device applications. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The DEABT forms 1:2 yellow complex with Pt(IV), which is sparingly soluble in water and completely soluble in water-ethanol-DMF medium. The Pt(IV)-DEABT complex shows maximum absorbance at 405 nm. Beer's law is valid up to 7.80 ?g cm-3, and optimum concentration range for the determination of platinum(IV) is 0.48-7.02 ?g cm-3. The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of the method are found to be 1.755 × 104 dm3 mol-1 cm-1 and 0.0012 ?g cm-2, respectively. The relative error and coefficient of variation (n=6) for the method does not exceed ±0.43% and 0.35%, respectively. Since the method tolerates a number of metal ions commonly associated with platinum, it can be employed for the determination of platinum in environmental samples, pharmaceutical samples, alloys, catalysts, and complexes. The method is rapid as the Pt(IV)-DEABT complex is soluble in water-ethanol-DMF medium and not requiring any time consuming extraction method for the complex. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.Item Analytical properties of p-[N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)amino]benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone: Spectrophotometric determination of palladium(II) in alloys, catalysts, and complexes(2011) Karthikeyan, J.; Parameshwara, P.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.p-[N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)amino]benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (CEABT) is proposed as a new, sensitive, and selective analytical reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of palladium(II). The reagent reacts with palladium(II) in the pH range 1-2 to form a yellow-colored complex. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range up to 2.64 ?g cm-3. The optimum concentration range for minimum photometric error as determined by Ringbom's plot method is 0.48-2.40 ?g cm-3. The yellowish Pd(II)-reagent complex shows a maximum absorbance at 395 nm, with molar absorptivity of 4.05 × 104 dm3 mol-1 cm-1 and Sandell's sensitivity of the complex from Beer's data, for D= 0.001, is 0.0026 ?g cm-2. The composition of the Pd(II)-CEABT reagent complex is found to be 1:2 (M-L). The interference of various cations and anions in the method were studied. The proposed method was successfully used for the determination of Pd(II) in alloys, catalysts, complexes, water samples, and synthetic alloy mixtures with a fair degree of accuracy. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.Item A rapid extractive spectrophotometric determination of copper(II) in environmental samples, alloys, complexes and pharmaceutical samples using 4-N,N(dimethyl)amino]benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone(2011) Karthikeyan, J.; Naik, P.P.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.4-[N,N-(Dimethyl)amino]benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (DMABT) is proposed as an analytical reagent for the extractive spectrophotometric determination of copper(II). DMABT forms yellow colored complex with copper(II) in the pH range 4.4-5.4. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range up to 4.7 ?g mL -1. The optimum concentration range for minimum photometric error as determined by Ringbom plot method is 1.2-3.8 ?g mL-1. The yellowish Cu(II)-DMABT complex shows a maximum absorbance at 420 nm, with molar absorptivity of 1.72 × 104dm3 mol-1 cm-1 and Sandell's sensitivity of the complex obtained from Beer's data is 0.0036 ?g cm-2. The composition of the Cu(II)-DMABT complex is found to be 1:2 (M/L). The interference of various cations and anions in the method were studied. Thus the method can be employed for the determination of trace amount of copper(II) in water, alloys and other natural samples of significant importance. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.Item Synthesis and characterization of temperature sensitive P-NIPAM macro/micro hydrogels(Elsevier B.V., 2011) JagadeeshBabu, P.E.; Suresh Kumar, R.; Maheswari, B.A thermo responsive macro porous poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel was synthesized using free radical polymerization. The reaction was optimized by varying the reaction temperature, monomer, cross-linker and initiator based on the strength and swelling characteristics of the hydrogel. The morphology of the macro hydrogel was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The swelling behavior of the macro hydrogel was performed gravimetrically and found that the gel synthesized at 36 °C had maximum deswelling ratio of 34.5 (-). These optimized values were further used to synthesis micro hydrogels using water-oil (w/o) emulsion technique. The morphology of the micro hydrogels were observed through SEM. Effect of water-oil ratio and stirrer speed on the mean particle size of the micro hydrogels were studied. Micro hydrogels synthesized at 1:1.5. w/o ratio and at 800. rpm had perfect spherical shape and had least particle mean diameter of 0.74 ?m, with SD of 0.5. Dye release kinetics with respect to temperature and time were studied using methylene blue solution. The release kinetic studies of micro hydrogel showed higher sustained release for 56. h compared to the macro hydrogel. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.Item New polypropylene supported chitosan NF-membrane for desalination application(2011) Padaki, M.; Isloor, A.M.; Fernandes, J.; Prabhu, K.N.In the present study, a new NF membrane was prepared by coating chitosan on polypropylene fiber support, by the dissolution of chitosan in 2% acetic acid solution. The resulting membrane was characterized by thermo gravimetric analysis, water absorption, contact angle measurement and scanning electron microscopy. Prepared membrane showed two Tg peaks, one at ~90 °C that was due to chitosan and the other peak at ~170 °C that was corresponding to the supporting polypropylene membrane. The membrane showed a low swelling ratio at pH 7, 9, and 11 as compared with pH 5. The performance of the membrane was assessed out using dead end cell. Water flux was studied at different pressures. The salt rejection study was done using NaCl solution and the effect of pH on performance of the membrane was also examined. Newly prepared membrane showed improved water flux, and % of rejection is highest in acidic pH and lowest in basic pH. Hydrulic permeability coefficient and the dielectric constant confirms that the prepared membrane is nanofiltration membrane. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
