Item Modelling operating speed and speed differential on intermediate lane rural roads(2012) Sowmya, N.J.; Ravi Shankar, A.U.; Anjaneyulu, M.V.L.R.Geometric design elements play an important role in defining the operational efficiency of any roadways. Considerable research has been undertaken worldwide to explore the design consistency concept including identifying potential consistency measures and developing models to estimate them. The main objective of this study is to investigate the design consistency of intermediate lane highways existing in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka state based on operating speed and speed differential models. The speed measurements are taken at the mid of tangent section and start of the curve during daylight, off-peak periods and under dry weather conditions. The multiple linear regression analysis technique in SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) software is used for model estimation. Both operating speed (85th percentile speed) and 85th percentile speed differential measures are used with geometric data to identify the design consistency of horizontal curves. A comparative study is performed to identify the variation between these two speed measures. Operating speed and speed differential models for intermediate lane rural roads are presented in this paper. © 2012 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY.Item Delay in Rural Road Construction: Evidence from Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in Shimoga District, Karnataka, India(Springer, 2021) Suresha, S.N.; Arun, V.Rural roads are the basic infrastructure required for the improvements of rural areas. Rural roads had been planned and constructed under various rural development programs by the Government of India. However, serious efforts through these programs could not make road connectivity for more than 50% of rural areas in India. Hence, the Government of India had launched a major programme known as Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) on December 25, 2000. The PMGSY programme emphasizes on time and quality of construction. This paper reports an investigation on the delay in the construction of PMGSY roads in Shimoga district, Karnataka, India. Using the real-time data of PMGSY roads available on the Online Management Monitoring and Accounting System, an analysis was made to find the delay occurrence in the construction projects of the study area and the effect of various parameters with respect to delay. The study reveals that 95% of the PMGSY road projects have not been completed within the stipulated time and the road length, construction type, and seasons do not affect delay in construction. The present study helps the policy makers to implement reliable polices on rural road programs in the future. © 2021, The Institution of Engineers (India).Item Prediction of Pavement Maintenance Cost for Rural Roads at Network Level(Springer, 2025) Arun, V.; Suresha, S.N.Predicting pavement maintenance cost is an important factor for planning the budgetary requirements of any road agency at the network level. Pavement condition prediction models play a vital role in predicting pavement maintenance costs. Road agencies in developing countries like India still need pavement condition prediction models. The present study proposes an approach to help road agencies predict pavement conditions and annual maintenance costs. The proposed method was developed on rural roads of Shimoga district, Karnataka, India. The pavement condition data were collected using the Online Management Monitoring and Accounting System (OMMAS) database and by field visual inspection survey. A homogeneous Markov model was developed to predict the future pavement condition and estimate the rural road network's annual pavement maintenance cost. The study results indicated that 59% of the road network would come to a reconstruction state at a 10-year duty cycle if no maintenance is provided. Consequently, the annual maintenance cost predicted for 2031 was Indian Rupee (INR) 751.6 million, with an increase of 17% on average with each duty cycle. The model was validated along with the sensitivity analysis. The sensitivity analysis indicated improved pavement performance reduces maintenance costs and vice versa. The validation of the model was reliable, with a Pearson’s correlation R value of 0.92 and R square value of 0.86 at 95% confidence level. Hence, with this proposed approach, road agencies can predict the annual pavement maintenance cost so that they can plan their budget accordingly for an effective maintenance strategy at a network level. © The Institution of Engineers (India) 2025.
