Item A method to generate a single sub-50-as pulse by employing a 5-fs laser pulse with intensity above the saturation intensity, was proposed. The neon target medium of 0.5 mm length and 5 Torr pressure, was placed 10 mm beyond the laser focus. Harmonic radiation from neon atoms, was obtained by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation coupled with Maxwell equations. The results show that the positive chirp contained in the broad continuum radiation can be compensated by an x-ray filter with a negative group delay dispersion in the spectral region of interest.(American Physical Society, Single sub-50-attosecond pulse generation from chirp-compensated harmonic radiation using material dispersion) Kim, K.T.; Kim, C.M.; Baik, M.G.; Umesh, G.; Nam, C.H.2004Item Nonlinear optical studies of a newly synthesized copolymer containing oxadiazole and substituted thiophenes(2007) John Kiran, A.; Udayakumar, D.; Chandrasekharan, K.; Ahdikari, A.V.; Shashikala, H.D.; Philip, R.We investigated the third-order nonlinear optical properties of a newly synthesized soluble copolymer containing oxadiazole and thiophene units using Z-scan and Degenerate Four Wave Mixing (DFWM) techniques. The measurements were performed at 532 nm with 7 ns pulses from a Nd:YAG laser. We found a good agreement between the values of ?(3) determined from both experiments. Z-scan results indicate a negative nonlinear refractive index, n2, whose magnitude is of the order of 10-10 esu. The copolymer exhibits strong nonlinear absorption and good optical limiting properties at 532 nm, and hence may be a potential material for optical limiting applications. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The measurements were performed using nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm wavelength by employing Z-Scan technique. The nonlinear refractive index is found to be of the order of 10-14 cm2/W. The magnitude of third order susceptibility is of the order of 10-13 esu. Their two photon absorption coefficient and absorption cross section have also been determined. The optical power limiting behavior of sydnone moieties doped PMMA was also investigated. The results suggest that among the three organic phenyl sydnone moieties, 2-benzylhydrazono-5-(3-p-tolylsydnone-4-yl)1,3,4,-thiadiazine doped PMMA is a promising class of nonlinear optical material due to its simple molecular structure with p-tolyl group. It also shows a very good optical limiting behaviour with a limiting threshold of 0.21 mJ/pulse. The nonlinear parameters obtained are comparable with the values obtained in stilbazolium like dye such as trans-4-[2-(pyrrl)vinyl]-1-methylpyridium iodide. Hence this material may be tailored suitably for applications such as optical power limiters, switches and modulators. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. The polymerization was carried out using chemical polymerization technique. The optical and charge-transporting property of the copolymer was investigated by UV-vis, fluorescence emission spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric studies. The copolymer shows UV absorption maxima at 375 nm and displays bluish-green fluorescence in DMF solution. Its electrochemical band gap was determined to be 2.07 eV. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the copolymer was investigated at 532 nm using single beam Z-scan and degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) techniques with nanosecond laser pulses. The copolymer exhibits strong optical limiting behavior due to effective three-photon absorption (3PA). Values of the effective 3PA coefficient (?), third-order nonlinear susceptibility (?(3)) and figure of merit (F) have been calculated. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. TPA cross-sections obtained for PMMA doped with the dyes PM597, DCM and rhodamine 6G-rhodamine B (co-doped) were found to be equal to 24.7, 33.3 and 32.3 GM, respectively (1 GM=10-50 cm4 s phot-1 mol-1). Furthermore, two-photon fluorescence was measured for the samples containing DCM and rhodamine 6G-rhodamine B (co-doped). Compared to the one-photon fluorescence spectrum, the peaks in the two-photon fluorescence spectrum were red shifted and the extent of red shift increased with increasing doping concentration. We have also observed that the red shift in the two-photon fluorescence peak of the samples in the solid form is much larger than that in the solution state. This phenomenon could be explained by a twisted intra-molecular charge transfer model. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption coefficient, magnitude of effective third-order susceptibility and coupling factor were determined. The optical power limiting behavior of the colorants was ascribed to two-photon absorption phenomenon. Nonlinear absorption cross-section increased with increase in ? electron density and the effective two-photon absorption cross-section was two orders of magnitude larger than those of commercially available azo compounds. The results suggest that these colorants offer promise as nonlinear optical materials for device applications. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The charge-transporting and linear optical property of the polymer has been investigated by cyclic voltammetric, UV-visible, and fluorescence emission spectroscopic studies. The UV-visible absorption spectrum of polymer in thin film form showed maxima at 420 nm. The polymer displayed bluish-green fluorescence both in solution and thin film form. The optical band gap is determined to be 2.27 eV. Third-order nonlinear optical property of the new polymer has been investigated at 532 nm using single beam Z-scan and degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) techniques with nanosecond laser pulses. The absorptive nonlinearity observed for the polymer P1 is of optical limiting type, which arises due to an "effective" three-photon absorption (3PA) process. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (?(3)) of the polymer is found to be 0.831 × 10-12 esu. Both linear and nonlinear optical studies revealed that the new polymer (P1) is a promising material for applications in photonic devices. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.Item 3,3?-Benzene-1,4-diylbis[1-(substituted)phenylprop-2-en-1-one] derivatives: A new class of materials for third-order nonlinear optical applications(2010) Poornesh, P.; Ravi, K.; Umesh, G.; Hegde, P.K.; Manjunatha, M.G.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.We have investigated the third-order nonlinear optical parameters of Bischalcones embedded in DMF solution and in solid PMMA matrix, by Z-scan technique using nanosecond laser pulse trains at 532 nm. Z-scan results reveal that the Bischalcones exhibits negative nonlinear refractive index as high as 10-11 esu. The molecular two-photon absorption cross-section ?2? of Bischalcones were of the order 10-46 cm4 s/photon, which is nearly two orders of magnitude larger than that of Rhodamine 6G which is 10-48 - 10-50 cm4 s/photon. We found that, the two-photon absorption (TPA) is the dominating nonlinear process leading to nonlinear absorption in both the cases in solution and as well as in solid medium. Based on TPA process, the Bischalcones exhibit good optical power limiting of nanosecond laser pulses at the input wavelength. The nonlinear optical parameters found to increase on enhancing the strength of the electron donor groups indicating the dependence and importance of electron donor/acceptor units on third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility ?(3). © 2009 Elsevier B.V. The polymer was prepared using a polyhydrazide precursor route. The polymer has a well-defined structure and exhibits good thermal stability, with a decomposition onset temperature in nitrogen of 300 °C. Cyclic voltammetry experiments revealed that the polymer has low-lying LUMO (-3.68 eV) and high-lying HOMO (-5.78 eV) energy levels. The electrochemical band gap was found to be 2.10 eV. The UV-visible absorption spectrum of the polymer presented a maximum at 373 nm, and it displayed bluish-green fluorescence in dilute chloroform solution. The nonlinear optical properties of the new polymer were investigated at 532 nm using the Z-scan technique with nanosecond laser pulses. The polymer exhibited strong optical limiting behavior due to excited state absorption, which was phenomenologically similar to a three-photon absorption (3PA) process. The 3PA coefficient ? was found to be 7×10-22 m3/W2. The studies show that the new polymer (P1) is a promising material for developing efficient photonic devices.Item Nonlinear optical studies on new conjugated poly{2,2 l-(3,4- dialkoxythiophene-2,5-diyl) bis[5-(2-thienyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole]}s(2010) Hegde, P.K.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.; Manjunatha, M.G.; Suchand Sandeep, C.S.; Philip, R.Three new donor-acceptor type poly{2,2 1-(3,4-dialkoxythiophene- 2,5-diyl)bis[5-(2-thienyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole]}s (P1, P2, and P3) were synthesized starting from thiodiglycolic acid and diethyl oxalate through multistep reactions. The polymerization was carried out using chemical polymerization technique. The optical and charge-transporting properties of the polymers were investigated by UV-visible, fluorescence emission spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric studies. The polymers showed bluish-green fluorescence in solutions. The electrochemical band gaps were determined to be 2.03, 2.09, and 2.17 eV for P1, P2, and P3, respectively. The nonlinear optical properties of new polymers were investigated at 532 nm using single beam Z-scan and degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) techniques with nanosecond laser pulses. The polymers exhibited strong optical limiting behavior due to "effective" three-photon absorption. Values of the effective three-photon absorption (3PA) coefficients, thirdorder nonlinear susceptibilities (? (3)), and figures (F) of merit were calculated. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
