Item An Experimental Study on Combustion and Emission Analysis of Four Cylinder 4-Stroke Gasoline Engine Using Pure Hydrogen and LPG at Idle Condition(Elsevier Ltd, 2016) Chitragar, P.R.; Shivaprasad, K.V.; Nayak, V.; Bedar, P.; Kumar, G.N.Fluctuation in oil prices and stricter exhaust emission norms were the main reasons wakening every researcher to search for suitable and feasible alternative fuels for automotive use. Among the available option gaseous fuels find their best position because of their compatible physical-chemical properties and ecofriendly nature than present fossil fuels. Hydrogen's combustion properties like high energy content, high heating value, wide range of flammability and low ignition energy with almost least toxic emissions are favorable to use in an IC engine as an alternative fuel. Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) has lower carbon content, higher calorific value, octane number and flame propagation speed will improve the emission results compared to gasoline fuel. This paper describes an experimental results carried out to evaluate the combustion and emission performance of a Maruti Suzuki make, spark ignited four cylinders, four stroke engines at idle condition by using pure hydrogen, LPG and gasoline. The engine was adjoined with Electronic Control Unit (ECU) assisting hydrogen and LPG injector system keeping gasoline line unchanged. Tests were carried out by using compressed hydrogen gas regulated by two stage pressure reduction from cylinder to atmospheric value and by using vaporizer pressure for LPG. For comparison engine was run first by gasoline and then by pure hydrogen and LPG. Study revealed that there was increment of 13% cylinder pressure for pure hydrogen and decrement of 4.5% cylinder pressure for LPG when compared to gasoline. The burn duration for pure hydrogen, LPG and gasoline were found to be increasing respectively which infers that hydrogen has very short combustion duration and gasoline higher. It was observed that toxic emissions like Carbon monoxide (CO), Hydrocarbons (HC) and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) were improved for pure hydrogen than LPG and gasoline. © 2016 The Authors.Item Synthesis of highly-branched alkanes for renewable gasoline(Elsevier B.V., 2020) Mascal, M.; Dutta, S.The gasoline market in the US is nearly twice that of diesel and jet fuel combined, and yet, nearly all research efforts to produce synthetic, biobased fuels center around these latter products. The reason for this is that a major component of gasoline is highly branched alkanes which, unlike straight chained products, are not readily derived from either fatty acid- or carbohydrate-based feedstocks. This review unpacks the motivations behind renewable gasoline synthesis and examines representative approaches to the targeted, de novo synthesis of densely-branched, high-octane isoalkanes and cycloalkanes employing chemocatalytic methods, as contrasted with the catalytic refining of biomass-derived feeds using petrochemical technologies. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.Item Experimental analysis of SI engine performance and emission characteristics with gasoline-denatured spirit blends as alternative fuels(2010) Hubballi, P.A.; Ashok Babu, T.P.The experimental study focused on investigating benefits of unleaded gasoline (P100) - denatured spirit [DNS (ethanol 93.3% v/v + water 6.7% v/v)] blends as fuel in a four cylinder four stroke SI engine. Performance tests were conducted to study volumetric efficiency (VolE), brake thermal efficiency (BThE), brake power (BP), engine torque (torque), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC). Engine exhaust emissions were investigated for carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Experiments were conducted at different engine speeds between 2500 - 4500 rpm maintaining throttle position of 50% throughout the experiments. The fuel blends used include DNS30P70 (ethanol 28 % + water 2% + gasoline 70 %), DNS50P50 (ethanol 46.65 % + water 3.35 % + gasoline 50 %) and DNS85P15 (ethanol 79.3 % + water 5.7 % + gasoline 15 %) which were compared with base fuel P100. The investigations revealed that blending DNS with P100 increases BThE, VolE, BP, torque and BSFC. The CO, HC, NOx and CO2 emissions in the exhaust decrease when compared to P100 operation. The DNS85P15 blend produced encouraging results in improved engine performance and decreased engine exhaust emission.Item Microwave-Assisted Extraction of Wax from Oily Sludge: An Experimental Study and its Process Variables Optimization Using Response Surface Methodology(Bellwether Publishing, Ltd., 2015) Kumar, B.; Raj Mohan, B.The wax present in petroleum sludge, generated by refineries and at crude production sites, consists of paraffin hydrocarbons (C18–C36) known as paraffin wax and naphthenic hydrocarbons (C30–C60). The present study is aimed at the recovery of wax from petroleum oily sludge by microwave-assisted solvent extraction using a Toluene/MEK mixture and subsequently de-crystallizing the wax. The process variables affecting the microwave-assisted solvent extraction are optimized for recovery of wax. The simultaneous effects of process variables such as irradiation time (2–10 minutes), solvent to sludge ratio (40–80 wt%), reactant volume (100–300 ml), and microwave power (80–400 W) on the recovery of wax were evaluated. A central composite design and response surface methodology were used for the optimization of the extraction process. Based on the central composite design, quadratic models were developed to correlate the extraction process variables with the responses and the models were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods for analysis of variance. Optimization of process variables shows the maximum recovery of wax was about 79.57% at 300 ml of reactant volume with microwave power output of 400 W at 7.6 minutes of retention time with 56.56% of Toluene/MEK to sludge ratio. © 2015, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Item Experimental Investigation of Variations in Spark Timing using a Spark-Ignition Engine with Hydrogen-Blended Gasoline(Wiley-VCH Verlag info@wiley-vch.de, 2015) Shivaprasad, K.V.; Chitragar, P.R.; Kumar, G.N.This study describes an experiment conducted using an electronically controllable single-cylinder high-speed gasoline engine to analyze the performance and emissions characteristics of various hydrogen-gasoline blends. The experiments have been conducted for various engine speeds and spark timings at the wide open throttle position. The experimental results revealed that the engine brake thermal efficiency and brake mean effective pressure first increase and then decrease with the increase engine speed at all spark timings. The minimum amount of brake specific energy consumption was observed for 20% hydrogen addition in the total fuel blend at 3000rpm engine speed and 14°crank angle (CA) before top dead center (BTDC) spark timing. Hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions were reduced with the retardation of spark timings. Nitrogen oxide emissions were continuously increased with the addition of hydrogen in the fuel blend as well as spark timing advance. © 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.Item An experimental investigation on performance and emission parameters of a multi-cylinder SI engine with gasoline–LPG dual fuel mode of operation(Taylor and Francis Ltd. michael.wagreich@univie.ac.at, 2017) Nayak, V.; Shankar, K.S.; Dinesha, P.; Mohanan, P.The present study deals with the performance and emission characteristics of a multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) spark ignition (SI) engine in gasoline–liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual fuel mode of operation. The LPG–gasoline ratio varied from 0 to 100% by controlling the injector signals at various speed and load conditions. Experiments show that the power output decreases with increase in speed and LPG content at lower load marginally due to lower volumetric efficiency. At higher load and lower speed conditions as the percentage of LPG increases there is not much difference in the power output. Results also reveal that 50% LPG flow gives maximum efficiency at full load condition and 4000 rpm due to lower fuel consumption. With 50% usage of LPG, the average increase in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) is 2% till the engine speed of 4000 rpm at full load (100%) and half load (50%) conditions. As the LPG ratio increases the engine will work in the lean region for all speed and load conditions. For all load and speed conditions, results reveal that 100% LPG will give minimum hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. Oxide of nitrogen (NOX) emissions are higher for 100% LPG. However 50% LPG flow gives good agreement of NOX, HC and CO emissions when compared with gasoline operation. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Item Influence of low-temperature combustion and dimethyl ether-diesel blends on performance, combustion, and emission characteristics of common rail diesel engine: a CFD study(Springer Verlag service@springer.de, 2017) Lamani, V.T.; Yadav, A.K.; Gottekere Narayanappa, K.G.Due to presence of more oxygen, absence of carbon-carbon (C-C) bond in chemical structure, and high cetane number of dimethyl ether (DME), pollution from DME operated engine is less compared to diesel engine. Hence, the DME can be a promising alternative fuel for diesel engine. The present study emphasizes the effect of various exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates (0–20%) and DME/Diesel blends (0–20%) on combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions of common rail direct injection (CRDI) engine using three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Extended coherent flame model-3 zone (ECFM-3Z) is implemented to carry out combustion analysis, and k-?-f model is employed for turbulence modeling. Results show that in-cylinder pressure marginally decreases with employing EGR compared to without EGR case. As EGR rate increases, nitrogen oxide (NO) formation decreases, whereas soot increases marginally. Due to better combustion characteristics of DME, indicated thermal efficiency (ITE) increases with the increases in DME/diesel blend ratio. Adverse effect of EGR on efficiency for blends is less compared to neat diesel, because the anoxygenated region created due to EGR is compensated by extra oxygen present in DME. The trade-off among NO, soot, carbon monoxide (CO) formation, and efficiency is studied by normalizing the parameters. Optimum operating condition is found at 10% EGR rate and 20% DME/diesel blend. The maximum indicated thermal efficiency was observed for DME/diesel ratio of 20% in the present range of study. Obtained results are validated with published experimental data and found good agreement. © 2017, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Item Hydrogen-Economic Synthesis of Gasoline-like Hydrocarbons by Catalytic Hydrodecarboxylation of the Biomass-derived Angelica Lactone Dimer(Wiley Blackwell info@wiley.com, 2017) Chang, F.; Dutta, S.; Mascal, M.The biomass-derived platform molecule levulinic acid is converted into the angelica lactone dimer (ALD) in high overall yield using simple inorganic catalysts. Hydrodecarboxylation of ALD using a Pd/?-Al2O3 catalyst under moderate hydrogen gas pressure at high temperatures generates branched C8–C9 hydrocarbons in nearly quantitative yield consuming as little as a single equivalent of external hydrogen. These molecules are high-octane “drop-in” equivalents of isoalkanes used in commercial gasoline. Catalytic hydrodecarboxylation is presented as a highly effective means to reduce hydrogen demand in biomass-to-biofuel conversion technologies. © 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, WeinheimItem Influence of spark timing on the performance and emission characteristics of gasoline–hydrogen-blended high-speed spark-ignition engine(Taylor and Francis Ltd. michael.wagreich@univie.ac.at, 2017) Shivaprasad, K.V.; Chitragar, P.R.; Nayak, V.; Kumar, G.N.This article experimentally investigates the effect of spark timing on performance and emission characteristics of high-speed spark-ignition (SI) engine operated with different hydrogen–gasoline fuel blends. For this purpose, the conventional carbureted SI engine is modified into an electronically controllable engine, wherein an electronically controllable unit was used to control the ignition timings and injection duration of gasoline. The tests were conducted with different spark timings at the wide open throttle position and 3000 rpm engine speed. The experimental results demonstrated that brake mean effective pressure and engine brake thermal efficiency increased first and then decreased with the increase in spark advance. Peak cylinder pressure, temperature and heat release rate were increased until 20% hydrogen addition and with increased spark timings. NOx emissions were continuously increased with the increment in both spark timings and hydrogen addition, whereas hydrocarbon emissions were increased with spark timings but decreased with hydrogen addition. CO emissions were reduced with the increase in spark timing and hydrogen addition. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Item Performance, emission, and combustion characteristics of twin-cylinder common rail diesel engine fuelled with butanol-diesel blends(Springer Verlag service@springer.de, 2017) Lamani, V.T.; Yadav, A.K.; Gottekere, K.N.Nitrogen oxides and smoke are the substantial emissions for the diesel engines. Fuels comprising high-level oxygen content can have low smoke emission due to better oxidation of soot. The objective of the paper is to assess the potential to employ oxygenated fuel, i.e., n-butanol and its blends with the neat diesel from 0 to 30% by volume. The experimental and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation is carried out to estimate the performance, combustion, and exhaust emission characteristics of n-butanol-diesel blends for various injection timings (9°, 12°, 15°, and 18°) using modern twin-cylinder, four-stroke, common rail direct injection (CRDI) engine. Experimental results reveal the increase in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) by ~ 4.5, 6, and 8% for butanol-diesel blends of 10% (Bu10), 20% (Bu20), and 30% (Bu30), respectively, compared to neat diesel (Bu0). Maximum BTE for Bu0 is 38.4%, which is obtained at 12° BTDC; however, for Bu10, Bu20 and Bu30 are 40.19, 40.9, and 41.7%, which are obtained at 15° BTDC, respectively. Higher flame speed of n-butanol-diesel blends burn a large amount of fuel in the premixed phase, which improves the combustion as well as emission characteristics. CFD and experimental results are compared and validated for all fuel blends for in-cylinder pressure and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and found to be in good agreement. Both experimental and simulation results witnessed in reduction of smoke opacity, NOx, and carbon monoxide emissions with the increasing n-butanol percentage in diesel fuel. © 2017, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany.
