A cascaded convolutional neural network architecture for despeckling OCT images
    (Elsevier Ltd, 2021) Anoop, B.N.; Kalmady, K.S.; Udathu, A.; Siddharth, V.; Girish, G.N.; Kothari, A.R.; Rajan, J.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique widely used for medical imaging. Noise in an OCT image generally degrades its quality, thereby obscuring clinical features and making the automated segmentation task suboptimal. Obtaining higher quality images requires sophisticated equipment and technology, available only in selected research settings, and is expensive to acquire. Developing effective denoising methods to improve the quality of the images acquired on systems currently in use has potential for vastly improving image quality and automated quantitative analysis. Noise characteristics in images acquired from machines of different makes and models may vary. Our experiments show that any single state-of-the-art method for noise reduction fails to perform equally well on images from various sources. Therefore, detailed analysis is required to determine the exact noise type in images acquired using different OCT machines. In this work we studied noise characteristics in the publicly available DUKE and OPTIMA datasets to build a more efficient model for noise reduction. These datasets have OCT images acquired using machines of different manufacturers. We further propose a patch-wise training methodology to build a system to effectively denoise OCT images. We have performed an extensive range of experiments to show that the proposed method performs superior to other state-of-the-art-methods. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

A retinex based non-local total generalized variation framework for OCT image restoration
    (Elsevier Ltd, 2022) Smitha, A.; Febin, I.P.; Padikkal, P.
A retinex driven non-local total generalized variational (TGV) model is proposed in this paper to restore and enhance speckled images. The combined first and second-order TGV controlled by a balancing parameter are used to improve the enhancement and restoration process. The distribution of the speckle is estimated from input images using detailed statistical analysis. The model is designed to handle speckle-noise following a Gamma distribution, as analyzed later in this paper. The non-local TGV model is shown to restore images without causing any visual artefacts, unlike the normal total variation (TV) model. Moreover, a retinex framework shows a remarkable improvement to the contrast features of the data without distorting the natural image characteristics as quantified visually and statistically in the experimental section of this work. A fast numerical approximation based on the Split-Bregman scheme is employed to improve the efficiency of the model in terms of computation. The proposed model is verified to have despeckled and enhanced the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) data to a greater extent compared to the state-of-the-art models as observable from the results shown in this paper. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Non-subsampled Shearlet Domain-based De-speckling Framework for Optical Coherence Tomography Images
(International Hellenic University - School of Science, 2023) Gupta, P.K.; Chanchal, A.K.; Lal, S.; Gupta, V.
An effective instrument for obtaining an image of the retina is an optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging device. OCT images of the retina are useful for diagnosing and tracking eye diseases. However, different physical configurations in the imaging apparatus are to blame for the speckle noise in retinal OCT images. The OCT image quality and assessment reliability are reduced due to aforementioned noise. This paper offered a paradigm for reducing speckle noise that was motivated by the mathematical formulation of speckle noise. Two distinct noise components make up speckle noise, one of which is additive and the other of which is multiplicative in nature. For each sort of noise, the suggested structure employs a different filter. To reduce the additive component of speckle noise, Weiner filtering is used. To minimize the multiplicative component of noise, a particular arrangement based on non-subsampled shearlet transform (NSST) is used. It is now widely acknowledge that NSST overcome the limitations of traditional wavelet transform therefore it very useful in dealing of distributed discontinuities therefore it is prefer in this research work.Real retinal OCT pictures are used to assess the proposed framework's quantitative and qualitative performance. The PSNR, MSE, SSIM, and CNR metrics are used to compare the suggested framework. In comparison to existing cutting-edge filters, the proposed framework performs better in terms of noise suppression capability with structure preservation capabilities. The proposed technique gives highest PSNR, SSIM and CNR value that indicate the effectiveness of proposed work in addition to this proposed work give lowest MSE value. The proposed work give better enhance images in comparison to other existing filter therefore it may be helpful to find out any abnormality in OCT image and improve the diagnose of OCT retinal image. © 2023 School of Science, IHU. Two dimensional cuckoo search optimization algorithm based despeckling filter for the real ultrasound images
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Gupta, P.K.; Lal, S.; Kiran, M.S.; Husain, F.
A clinical ultrasound imaging plays a significant role in the proper diagnosis of patients because, it is a cost-effective and non-invasive technique in comparison with other methods. The speckle noise contamination caused by ultrasound images during the acquisition process degrades its visual quality, which makes the diagnosis task difficult for physicians. Hence, to improve their visual quality, despeckling filters are commonly used for processing of such images. However, several disadvantages of existing despeckling filters discourage the use of existing despeckling filters to reduce the effect of speckle noise. In this paper, two dimensional cuckoo search optimization algorithm based despeckling filter is proposed for avoiding limitations of various existing despeckling filters. Proposed despeckling filter is developed by combining fast non-local means filter and 2D finite impulse response (FIR) filter with cuckoo search optimization algorithm. In the proposed despeckling filter, the coefficients of 2D FIR filter are optimized by using the cuckoo search optimization algorithm. The quantitative results comparison between the proposed despeckling filter and other existing despeckling filters are analyzed by evaluating PSNR, MSE, MAE, and SSIM values for different real ultrasound images. Results reveal that the visual quality obtained by the proposed despeckling filter is better than other existing despeckling filters. The numerical results also reveal that the proposed despeckling filter is highly effective for despeckling the clinical ultrasound images. © Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2018.

A weighted nuclear norm (WNN)-based retinex DIP framework for restoring aerial and satellite images corrupted by gamma distributed speckle noise
    (Springer, 2024) Shastry, A.; Padikkal, J.; George, S.; Bini, A.A.
Restoration and enhancement are crucial preprocessing steps in the satellite domain. Mainly in active remote sensing such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), the images are more prone to speckle distortions and their reduction is not so trivial. Traditional deep learning models require large training datasets, limiting their applicability. This paper introduces a novel approach that combines the Deep Image Prior (DIP) model with a weighted nuclear norm (WNN) within a variational retinex framework to address these challenges. DIP leverages prior knowledge about noise distribution and works effectively with a single noisy image, eliminating the need for a large number of training images or ground truth. The WNN assigns non-negative weights to singular values, capturing the significance of each value and preserving crucial information during restoration. This approach offers a promising solution for satellite image restoration without relying on huge training data. The proposed method is evaluated through extensive experiments using various image quality metrics, including PSNR, SSIM, ENL, CNR, Entropy, and GCF. The comparative studies provide compelling evidence that the proposed method surpasses existing techniques in effectively restoring and enhancing speckled input images. Furthermore, statistical analysis performed using the Friedman test demonstrates the superior denoising performance of the model. Additionally, an ablation study is conducted to empirically determine the optimal regularization parameters, ensuring the optimal performance of the model. However, the theoretical selection of parameters for achieving optimal results remains an area that requires further exploration. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2023.

AttentionDIP: attention-based deep image prior model to restore satellite and aerial images from gamma distributed speckle interference
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Shastry, A.; George, S.; Bini, A.A.; Padikkal, J.
Image restoration is an inevitable pre-processing step in most satellite imaging applications. The satellite imaging modality such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is prone to speckle distortions due to constructive and destructive interference of the probing signals. Speckles being data correlated and multiplicative, their reduction is not so trivial. Since speckles are not purely noise interventions, a blind reduction process leads to spurious analysis at the later stages. Moreover, the image details are liable to get compromised during such a noise reduction process. An attention-based deep image prior (DIP) model with U-Net architecture has been proposed in this work to carefully address these setbacks. The attention block is used to scale the features extracted from the encoder, and they are concatenated with the features from the decoder to obtain both low- and high-level features. The attention module incorporated in the model helps to extract significant complex structures in SAR images. Further, the DIP model duly respects the noise distribution of speckles while performing the despeckling task. Various synthetic, natural, aerial, and satellite images are subjected to the testing and verification process, and the results obtained are in favor of the proposed model. The quantitative analysis carried out using various statistical metrics in this study also reveals the restoration ability of the proposed method in terms of both despeckling and structure preservation. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2023.

A retinex inspired deep image prior model for despeckling and deblurring of aerial and satellite images using proximal gradient method
(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2025) Shastry, A.; Bini, A.A.; Padikkal, J.
Unsupervised learning models, particularly in the remote sensing domain, have gained significant attention in recent years. Various degradations in the satellite images, primarily occurring during acquisition, pose a substantial hurdle in obtaining reliable ground truth and extensive training data. The Deep Image Prior model (DIP) addresses these issues by performing restoration tasks using a single image, relying on the implicit regularization inherent in the network architecture. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, integrating the DIP model within the retinex framework to restore aerial and satellite images from the Gamma distributed speckles and linear shift-invariant Gaussian blur along with contrast enhancement using the alternating proximal gradient descent ascent (PGDA) method. Our proposed methodology combines implicit regularization with explicit total variational (TV) regularization, incorporating automated estimation of local regularization parameters. The data-fidelity component in the optimization function is formulated using the Bayesian Maximum A posteriori (MAP) estimate, assuming the speckles follow the Gamma distribution. Demonstration of despeckling and deblurring alone and in addition as a combined task is carried out on aerial and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images with different resolutions and polarization from various sources. Results obtained are compared with various state-of-the-art despeckling and deblurring models using distinct image quality metrics such as Equivalent Number of Looks (ENL), Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR), Edge Preserving Index (EPI), Entropy, Global Contrast Factor (GCF), Natural Image Quality Evaluator (NIQE), Blind/Referenceless Image Spatial Quality Evaluator (BRISQUE) and Bradley-Terry (B-T) score based on the various factors. The quality of restored images depicted superior performance of the proposed method over the existing models under study. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

TransSARNet: a deep learning framework for despeckling of SAR images
    (Institute of Physics, 2025) Kevala, V.D.; Sravya, N.; Lal, S.; Suresh, S.; Dell’Acqua, F.
Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) images are extensively used for Earth observation because of their all-weather, day, and night imaging capabilities. However, speckle noise in SAR images significantly reduces their usability in a variety of applications. Deep learning models developed for SAR despeckling exhibit promising noise reduction capabilities. Bringing a balance between reducing graininess and preserving texture details is a challenging task. In addition, supervised training of a robust deep learning model requires noisy images that capture the SAR speckle dynamics and the corresponding speckle-free ground truth, which is generally not available. This study proposes the first hybrid CNN-Halo attention-based transformer model for SAR despeckling. CNN-based feature extraction modules provide multiscale and multidirectional and large-scale feature maps. A halo-attention transformer block is used in the skip connection. It aids in the better preservation of radiometric information in the despeckled SAR images. TransSARNet is trained in a supervised manner using a new synthetic SAR dataset, which is a combination of the Kylberg and UCMerced land-use datasets. This study also analyzed the effect of combining the Kylberg and UCMerced datasets on texture preservation in despeckled SAR images. The visual and qualitative metrics evaluated on Sentinel-1 Single Look Complex SAR data showed that the proposed TransSARNet approach outperformed the other models under consideration. TransSARNet achieves a harmonious balance between model complexity, despeckling ability, edge preservation, radiometric information preservation, and smoothing in homogeneous regions. © 2025 IOP Publishing Ltd.
