Sound radiation and transmission loss characteristics of a honeycomb sandwich panel with composite facings: Effect of inherent material damping
    (Academic Press, 2016) Arunkumar, M.P.; Jagadeesh, M.; Jeyaraj, J.; Gangadharan, K.V.; Mailan Chinnapandi, M.C.L.
This paper presents the results of numerical studies carried out on vibro-acoustic and sound transmission loss behaviour of aluminium honeycomb core sandwich panel with fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) facings. Layered structural shell element with equivalent orthotropic elastic properties of core and orthotropic properties of FRP facing layer is used to predict the free and forced vibration characteristics. Followed by this, acoustic response and transmission loss characteristics are obtained using Rayleigh integral. Vibration and acoustic characteristics of FRP sandwich panels are compared with aluminium sandwich panels. The result reveals that FRP panel has better vibro-acoustic and transmission loss characteristics due to high stiffness and inherent material damping associated with them. Resonant amplitudes of the response are fully controlled by modal damping factors calculated based on modal strain energy. It is also demonstrated that FRP panel can be used to replace the aluminium panel without losing acoustic comfort with nearly 40 percent weight reduction. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Influence of nature of core on vibro acoustic behavior of sandwich aerospace structures
(Elsevier Masson SAS 62 rue Camille Desmoulins Issy les Moulineaux Cedex 92442, 2016) Arunkumar, M.P.; Jeyaraj, P.; Gangadharan, K.V.; Mailan Chinnapandi, M.C.
This paper presents the study of influence of core geometry on vibration and acoustic response characteristics of sandwich panels which are used as aerospace structures. Sandwich panels considered in this research work are: (a) Honeycomb core, (b) Truss and Z core, (c) Foam core. The present study has found that (i) For a honeycomb core sandwich panel in due consideration to space constraint, the better acoustic comfort can be achieved by reducing the core height and increasing the face sheet thickness. (ii) It is demonstrated that, for a honeycomb core sandwich panel, vibration and acoustic response is not sensitive to the cell size. (iii) It is observed that, triangular core gives better acoustic comfort for the truss core sandwich panel compared to other type of core. (iv) For foam core sandwich panels, it is observed that sandwich panel with carbon-epoxy (high stiffness) face sheet radiates less sound in the lower frequency range (0–100 Hz). While the sandwich panel with Titanium (high density) face sheet radiates less sound at the higher frequencies. In order to reduce the preprocessing time and computational effort throughout the analysis in the present study, equivalent 2D elastic properties are calculated and used to find out the vibration and acoustic response characteristics. © 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS

Vibro-acoustic behavior of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced polymer nanocomposite plates
    (SAGE Publications Ltd info@sagepub.co.uk, 2018) George, N.; Jeyaraj, P.; Murigendrappa, S.M.; Mailan Chinnapandi, M.C.
This paper presents the numerical investigation results carried out on vibro-acoustic behavior of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced polymer nanocomposite plate using combined finite element method and Rayleigh integral. Parameter studies are carried out to analyze the in?uence of nature of functional grading, loading of carbon nanotube, and structural boundary conditions on free and forced vibration and sound radiation characteristics in detail. It is found that natural frequencies are significantly in?uenced by the nature of functional grading while the mode shapes are insensitive. The resonant amplitude of vibration and acoustic response are significantly in?uenced with the nature of different functional grading. This re?ects in the bandwise calculation of sound power also which recommends the carbon nanotube functional grading with X distribution along the thickness direction for lower frequency level. Similar variation in vibro-acoustic response has been observed with increase in the carbon nanotube loading also. © 2016, IMechE 2016.

Vibro-acoustic response and sound transmission loss characteristics of truss core sandwich panel filled with foam
(Elsevier Masson SAS 62 rue Camille Desmoulins Issy les Moulineaux Cedex 92442, 2018) Arunkumar, M.P.; Jeyaraj, P.; Gangadharan, K.V.; Mailan Chinnapandi, M.C.
This paper presents the studies carried out for improving the acoustic behavior of truss core sandwich panel, which is mostly used in aerospace structural applications. The empty space of the truss core is filled with polyurethane foam (PUF) to achieve better vibro-acoustic and sound transmission loss characteristics. Initially equivalent elastic properties of the foam filled truss core sandwich panel are calculated. Then, the vibration response of the panel under a harmonic excitation is obtained based on the equivalent 2D finite element model. Finally, the vibration response is given as an input to the Rayleigh integral code built in-house to obtain the acoustic and sound transmission loss characteristics. The results revealed that PUF filling of the empty space of the truss core, significantly reduces resonant amplitudes of both vibration and acoustic responses. It is also observed that foam filling reduces the overall sound power level significantly. Similarly, sound transmission loss studies revealed that, sudden dips at resonance frequencies are significantly reduced. Also an experiment is conducted on forced vibration response of honeycomb core sandwich panel to show that equivalent 2D model can be used for predicting sound power level and transmission loss behavior. © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS

Vibro-acoustics response of an isotropic plate under non-uniform edge loading: An analytical investigation
(Elsevier Masson SAS 62 rue Camille Desmoulins Issy les Moulineaux Cedex 92442, 2020) Gunasekaran, V.; Jeyaraj, J.; Mailan Chinnapandi, L.B.M.
Analytical studies carried out on the vibro-acoustic response behavior of an isotropic plate under non-uniform edge loads subjected to steady-state mechanical excitation is presented. An analytical method based on the energy approach is used to calculate the buckling load (Pcr). Free and forced vibration responses of the plate are obtained using an analytical method based on Reddy's third-order shear deformation theorem (TSDT) while sound radiation behavior is analyzed using Rayleigh Integral. Results revealed that Pcr is significantly influenced by the nature of non-uniform edge load. Similarly, natural frequencies reduce with an increase in axial compressive load due to a reduction in structural stiffness. Vibration and acoustic resonant amplitudes are affected by the intensity of the compressive load. Sound transmission loss reduces with an increase in compressive load magnitude and the effect is significant in the stiffness dominant region. © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS

Analytical Solution for Sound Radiation Characteristics of Graphene Nanocomposites Plate: Effect of Porosity and Variable Edge Load
    (World Scientific, 2021) Gunasekaran, V.; Jeyaraj, J.; Mailan Chinnapandi, L.B.; Kumar, A.
The effects of graded dispersion of graphene platelets and porosity on vibro-acoustics of nanocomposite plate exposed to variable edge loads are analytically investigated. Voigt and Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model is used to obtain effective properties of the porous graphene nanocomposites. The strain energy technique is implemented to estimate the buckling load (Pcr). By means of Reddy's third-order shear deformation theorem and Rayleigh Integral, vibration and acoustic responses are obtained. After validating the present analysis with the published results, the nature of edge loads on buckling and vibro-acoustic response is significant. It is noted that an increase in the intensity of non-uniform in-plane loads leads to changes in free vibration modes and resonant amplitude of response. The weight percentage and grading pattern of graphene reinforcement cause the stiffness hardening effect, whereas porosity distribution and coefficients cause the stiffness softening effect on the nanocomposite plate. It is found that the plate with symmetric distribution of graphene platelets with more concentration at the surface and symmetric porosity variation with more porosity at the center radiates less sound power. © 2021 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Acoustic radiation and transmission loss of FG-Graphene composite plate under nonuniform edge loading
(Elsevier Ltd, 2021) Gunasekaran, V.; Jeyaraj, J.; Mailan Chinnapandi, L.B.
The influence of nonuniform edge loads on the acoustic response of a functionally graded graphene reinforced composite plate is investigated analytically. The energy method is implemented to calculate the buckling load (Pcr). An analytical method based on Reddy's third-order shear deformation theorem is used to obtain the vibration response, and acoustic response is obtained using Rayleigh Integral. The nature of edge load variation on buckling and vibro-acoustic response is significant. Free vibration mode shape changes with an increase in edge load and consequently affects the resonant amplitude of responses also especially for the plates with a higher aspect ratio. Volume fraction and dispersion pattern of graphene nano-platelets also influences the resonance amplitudes. Plate with FG?GRCC dispersion pattern has improved buckling and vibro-acoustic response behavior. Similarly, change in sound transmission loss level is significant in the stiffness region compared to the damping and mass dominated region. © 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS

Acoustic Response of an Isotropic Beam under Axially Variable Loads Using Ritz and Rayleigh Integral Methods
(Polska Akademia Nauk, 2022) Somi Naidu, S.N.; Jeyaraj, J.; Mailan Chinnapandi, L.B.; Reddi Chintapalli, V.S.N.R.
Vibro-acoustic response of an isotropic beam under the action of variable axial loads (VALs), is presented in the study. Effects of six different types of VALs and three types of end conditions on buckling, free vibration and sound radiation characteristics are investigated. Static buckling and free vibration behaviours using shear and normal deformable theorem and Ritz method. However, the forced vibration response is evaluated using modal superposition method and the acoustic radiation characteristics are obtained using Rayleigh integral. The nature of variation of VALs and end conditions are influencing buckling and free vibration characteristics remarkably. Results indicate that the acoustic response is highly sensitive to the nature of VAL and intensity of the VAL. In general, sound power at resonance decreases when the magnitude of VAL is increased. © © 2022 S.N. Balireddy et al.

Dynamic and sound radiation characteristics of a non-uniformly heated isotropic plate
(SAGE Publications Inc., 2022) Vaiduriyam, A.R.; Mailan Chinnapandi, L.B.M.; Pichaimani, J.
The influence of non-uniform heating on the anisotropic plate’s dynamic and acoustic response characteristics is investigated numerically. The effect of non-uniform heating on the plate is accounted in the form of pre-stress developed on the plate due to non-uniform heating of the plate. The influence of structural boundary conditions, nature of temperature variation, and level of temperature on vibration and acoustic response characteristics are investigated in detail. Thermal buckling strength and fundamental buckling mode are highly sensitive to the nature of temperature variation across the plate. Free vibration mode shapes of the plates with high aspect ratio and free edges are changing their pattern with an increase in temperature. The resonant amplitude of sound power radiated associated with a particular mode is dominated by vibration nodes and anti-nodes shifting relative to the excitation location. Further, an increase in sound power level with an increase in temperature is observed clearly in the lower octave frequency bands. © The Author(s) 2022.

An exact solution for vibro-acoustic response of smart sandwich panels with MEE composite Layer
    (Elsevier Ltd, 2022) Arunkumar, M.P.; Bhagat, V.S.; Geng, Q.; Li, Y.; Jeyaraj, J.
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first endeavor to provide an exact solution for a vibro-acoustic response of Magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) composite plate and sandwich panels with MEE facings. The governing equation of motion is developed using Hamilton's principle considering the third-order shear deformation theory to account for transverse shear. Based on boundary conditions and the Maxwell equation, the variation of electric and magnetic potentials are adopted along the thickness of the MEE composite layer. Analysis of the vibro-acoustic response of sandwich panels which are extensively used in aerospace structures such as cellular, trapezoidal, triangular, and honeycomb are presented. Influences of electric and magnetic potential on the vibro-acoustic response are also presented for the different types of truss core and honeycomb core sandwich panels. © 2022
