    Women Empowerment Through Social Media: Insights from India

    In recent times, social media has been used by people to participate in a particular event and has resulted in the generation of a large amount of data online. These data can be helpful for the decision-maker in promoting and devising necessary policies at the right time. The purpose of this paper is to understand the peoples’ sentiments and emotions about a recent social movement.     Cloud-Based E-Learning Service: Insight from India

    The factors influencing the adoption of a cloud platform in the development of e-learning service is identified in this study. The e-learning service based on a cloud platform is analyzed from single/multiple data center dimensions. In spite of developing e-learning infrastructure, the service of the cloud platform is often adopted. The cloud-based e-learning simulation environment is created using CloudAnalyst tool. The efficiency of the cloud is analyzed based on e-learning hosted on a single data center and multiple data centers. The service time and overall response time of the datacenter are analyzed through CloudAnalyst. The infrastructure cost estimation for both models is also calculated. The study identifies that these factors influence the development of e-learning services in a cloud platform. Earlier studies less analyze the influencing factors of the online courses in the cloud environment. In future research, the cost factor can also be considered in the development of e-learning services. Fewer studies are reported on e-learning service based on a cloud platform in the Indian context. The current study demonstrates how cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) improves the performance of the e-learning system. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2020.

    Challenges and opportunities for coastal reservoir development in India

    In India, presently 320 million people remain in the water-starved parts of the country, and according to the United Nations, 840 million people are expected to be water-starved in India by 2050. Although there has been no significant change in India’s rainfall pattern, the number of areas under drought in India is increasing every year. Increase in population is one of the reasons for water scarcity, but inefficient management of the precipitation received stands as the major cause. Although extreme rainfall events are significantly increasing, there is a spatial nonuniformity in the rainfall events that occur. This makes it difficult to preplan large-scale water storage at different locations. Solution to India’s water problem lies in conserving the abundant monsoon water bounty by storing it in coastal reservoirs for future use. This paper focuses on the challenges and opportunities in India for storing river floodwaters in coastal reservoir. The paper also presents the concept of Sarovar Mala, a chain of coastal reservoirs, an innovative concept that has the potential to ensure water availability to India throughout the year. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

    Examining the effects of vented dams on land use and land cover in the Shambhavi Catchment: a multitemporal sentinel imagery analysis

    The rapid expansion of the global economy has given rise to concerning ecological consequences, notably a dramatic increase in land cover change (LCC). This section presents how to use the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform to explore the administrative divisions of the Southern Indian Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, which were chosen for their LCC susceptibility. Leveraging GEE, we generated a time series dataset tracking LCC over a 4-year period (2019–22). Our findings demonstrate an impressive overall accuracy (OA) of 96.30% for 2019 and 95.47% for 2022. A significant revelation in our study is the 13.64% reduction in forested areas, accompanied by a 0.68% increase in urban development within the district. This research attempt offers vital insights into the impact of dam construction on LCC, aiding informed decisions on water resource management. This research promotes a sustainable and ecologically conscious approach to holistic development in the study region and beyond. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

    Does Board Gender Diversity Enhance the Sustainable Performance of Firms? Empirical Evidence From India

    This study explores the link between board gender diversity and corporate sustainability disclosure. The study employs 417 Indian companies to investigate how the incorporation of corporate sustainability disclosure and gender diversity on the board of directors interrelate. The findings show that companies with a higher proportion of female directors enhance sustainable disclosure by taking favorable reporting measures to address environmental issues, social welfare concerns, and governance problems. The companies with more women on board incorporate highly sensitive initiatives regarding the environment, society, and overall governance. These results suggest that women directors add valuable diversity, leading to better decisions and a stronger focus on social and environmental concerns. This study extends the prevailing literature on gender studies and sustainability by presenting empirical recommendations about the role of females in corporate decision-making, specifically related to the sustainability of Indian firms. © 2026 Dhishna Pannikot.     Policies to Mitigate Select Consequence of Social Media: Insights from India

    Apart from the benefits to humanity, often, social media possess consequences such as online hate content, fake news, online abuse, cyber-bullying and other demeaning expressions. As the increased hate content causes several health issues, it is necessary to mitigate it. Hate content mitigation may attain sustainable development goals of United Nations. Therefore, the objective of the article is to identify the possible policies to mitigate social media consequence-online hate content. In this regard, online and offline opinions from the Indian respondents are gathered through the questionnaire designed for the purpose. The software which is developed in R programming language is used to analyse opinions. The analysis results reveal the role of government and non-government authorities for digital hate content reduction. The non-governmental communities-civil societies, private sectors, and intermediaries are more important to reduce digital hate content. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

    Child Online Safety Intervention Through Empowering Parents and Technical Experts: Indian Context

    Child online safety is a state of being protected from online problematic content and environment. Purpose of this study is to examine the stakeholders’ empowered status influence on child online safety. Using questionnaires survey responses on relational aspects of stakeholder empowerment and child online safety is collected from parents and technical experts who were working with the Internet safety. The responses are analyzed with the help of SPSS software and the results are examined for influencing factors of child online safety. Restricting resources, blocking at different levels and parental control are the different influencing factors of child online safety. As the parental control influencing factor exists with both the models of parents and technical experts initiated, it plays an important role in attaining child online safety. The influencing factors which are observed from the study can be emphasized to control child online threats and provide online safety. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

    Developing Indian Smart Cities: Insights from Social Media

    Smart cities play an important role in overall development of a nation by progressing with economic, environmental and social domains. India has projected to create 100 smart cities in near future. The purpose of the paper is to identify the key influencing components and the social media users’ expectations for smart cities development in India. The Twitter social media content of smart cities council and the user posts on smart cities are collected through Twitter application programming interface. The collected tweets are cleaned by pre-processing methods and analyzed for insights. Technology, infrastructure, innovation, transport, mobility and management are the key influencing components for smart cities development in India. The social media users are expecting to emphasize on combating the issues like Covid-19 and use of IoT technology for the success of smart cities project. The integration of different components could increase the success of the project. The analysis of the content shared by the groups (smart cities council and the social media users) which are at different sides of smart cities’ development project, increases the novelty of the study. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

    Determinants of mobile health application awareness and use in India: An empirical analysis

    Purpose-To examine the influence of mobile health in improving health service delivery in India. With this aim, the current research examines the role of individuals' cognitive factors, characteristics of mobile-service, and health-related behaviour from a technology viewpoint towards awareness and use of mobile health applications. Design/methodology/approach-Quantitative approach has been used with data being collected both online and offline through structured questionnaires. The factors for determining variables for awareness and use were prepared based on technology acceptance and health belief literature. A sample size of 528 responses was analysed using structural equation modelling. Findings-Mobile service enabled empowerment and health information orientation were found to have a direct influence on awareness and use. Originality/value-Earlier studies on mobile health relating to India explains its importance in health service delivery and were adequate in explaining individuals' cognitive factors, characteristics of mobile-service, and health-related behaviour from a technology viewpoint on awareness and use. Therefore, the current study attempts to establish relationships between these factors for measuring awareness and use. Drawing on the statistical inferences, the implication has been recommended. © 2020 ACM.

    Seasonal and Lockdown Effects on Air Quality in Metro Cities in India

    Air pollution is one of the worst avoidable threats in developing nations across the world. India has undergone a substantial number of infrastructure changes during recent years due to the ever-increasing population. This and the consequent industrialization, the air quality of Indian cities became worsened. The changes in climatic conditions across various cities in India also contribute to air pollution. To control the air pollution within the acceptable limit several control measures have been imposed in India, despite these efforts the air pollution level has not decreased considerably. In India, the first COVID-19 case has reported on 30th January 2020 in the state of Kerala. To control the quick spread of COVID-19 in India, the central government executed a three-week nationwide lockdown from 24th March 2020, and further, it has extended into several phases. It was the first time in India a long-term shutting down of all the sectors happening and which resulted in positively on the environment. This study is dealing with the lockdown effect on air quality in metro cities in India and is compared with the pre-existing conditions. Also, the seasonal variations in air quality in the course of the past two years are compared. The data of pollutants PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, O3, CO, and NH3 from metro cities were collected and by adopting the National Air Quality Index to depict the variations in overall air quality. During the lockdown period, most of the cities experience a considerable improvement in overall air quality and PM10, NO2, PM2.5, and CO concentrations. Whereas, the Ozone shows some increasing trend in a few cities might be due to the increment in the temperature caused by the exposure of sun during the summer season. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
