Item Adaptive distribution feeder protection scheme to handle the penetration of seig based wind farm(Universitatea Politehnica din Timisoara blucretiu@yahoo.com, 2014) Arthi Sahaya Rones, V.; Vittal, P.K.There is a potential threat to the conventional distribution overhead feeder protection due to the increasing penetration of Distributed Generation (DG). In order to cope up with this, adaptive feeder protection schemes are required. This work involves the development of an adaptive feeder protection scheme to surmount the impacts of wind based DG which is highly intermittent in nature. PSCAD® is used to carry out simulations. MATLAB based software package for distribution system conductor sizing and protection coordination studies are also presented.Item Grid integration of wind and photovoltaic hybrid energy system(Universitatea Politehnica din Timisoara blucretiu@yahoo.com, 2014) Vinatha Urundady, V.; Vittal, P.K.Hybrid energy system usually consists of two or more renewable/nonrenewable energy sources. Currently hybrid systems involving wind power as one of the constituent along with fuel cell and/or photovoltaic power are more appealing. The main purpose of such hybrid power systems is to overcome the intermittency and uncertainty of wind energy and to make the power supply more reliable. Hybrid wind power with fuel cell can avoid the drawback of wind power intermittency, since fuel cell can act as an energy barrier and adjust the power output effectively. Wind power and solar energy can be combined into a hybrid system, especially for the power supply for remote areas where the cost of transmission line is too high. Another advantage of this kind of hybrid system is that they are both renewable energies, which is compatible to the environment. In order to deliver the stable power to the load, a substantial battery bank is needed, which enhances the size of the system, cost and also causes environmental pollution. The deployment of battery can be avoided by directly connecting the hybrid system to the grid. The work presented in this paper consists of modeling and simulation of wind and photovoltaic hybrid energy system inter-connected to electrical grid through power electronic interface. The power conditioning system is implemented to control power electronic circuits and system performance is evaluated for different input power levels and load variation.Item Power control strategy for grid connected permanent magnet synchronous generator of a distributed generation unit(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd., 2014) Vinatha Urundady, V.; Vittal, P.K.This paper describes the studies on the operation and control of a variable speed wave energy conversion system. The wave energy conversion system considered is oscillating-water-column (OWC) based Wells turbine driven permanent magnet synchronous generator connected to the grid by means of fully controlled frequency converter. In such systems primary aim is to achieve a low distortion, high power quality power export from the converter with the objective to regulate the power flow or power factor optimisation. In this paper wave energy conversion system is modelled and control schemes are implemented for regulating the dc link voltage for varying input conditions and for regulating the grid current entering the distribution network and hence the power flow into the grid. Response of the system is investigated under steady state, dynamic and transient conditions. In each case the grid current distortion and the dynamic performance of the converter control schemes are evaluated. © © 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
