Performance analysis of distance relay in an AC grid with VSC-HVDC connection
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017) Tale, S.; Muniappan, M.; Vittal, K.P.
Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link is the economic option for long distance bulk power transmission and it is used to interconnect distributed generation sources into AC grids. A 3-terminal VSC-HVDC system has been modeled in this paper. With the penetration of such Multi-terminal VSC-HVDC links into the AC grid, mis-coordination in the operation of distance relays of the AC transmission system is investigated where a Zone-2 fault can possibly be viewed as a Zone-3 event. Also, the impact of change in AC voltage reference and active power reference of a VSC on the performance of distance relays is studied. This analysis is validated through simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC environment. © 2017 IEEE.

Modeling and simulation of PMSG-based wind power generation system
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018) Muniappan, M.; Vittal, K.P.
Wind energy is one of the best technologies and widely used source of renewable energy for supplying the electric power to the world due to its environmental and economic advantages. An application of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) into the wind energy system is continuously increasing. In this paper, the modeling and simulation of a PMSG-based wind power generation system under power system dynamic conditions are presented. The dynamic behavior of the wind power generation system is analyzed during the start-up process and the gust, ramp and noisy variation of wind conditions using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation. © 2018 IEEE.

Modeling and simulation studies on performance evaluation of three-terminal VSC-HVDC link connected offshore wind farms
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018) Muniappan, M.; Vittal, K.P.
Due to the continuous increase in power demand, offshore wind farms (OWFs) are increasing consistently since last decade. Normally OWFs are located at very long distance from the onshore grid. VSC based HVDC link is the economic option to interconnect the OWFs with the onshore grid. An application of multi-terminal networks into the HVDC link is continuously increasing. In this paper, a three-terminal VSC based HVDC link connected OWFs is modeled and its performance is analysed using PSCAD/EMTDC. The response of the proposed HVDC system is analysed under different wind conditions and various power system fault conditions. In addition, Harmonic performance of HVDC system is analysed. The final emphasis of this paper is to assess transient behaviour of multi-terminal VSC-HVDC systems. © 2017 IEEE.

Simulation studies on the distance relay performance in the presence of STATCOM
(Universitatea Politehnica din Timisoara blucretiu@yahoo.com, 2011) Sham, M.V.; Vittal, K.P.
Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices are used to enhance the transient stability limit and power transfer capacity of the existing transmission lines. The mid-point compensation using static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) as a shunt FACTS device is common practice among utilities. But, the presence of STATCOM has influence on performance of the distance relay under normal operating conditions, as well as under fault conditions. This paper presents both analytical and simulation studies carried out using PSCAD/EMTDC on a transmission system connected with a STATCOM at the midpoint and its influence on distance relay performance. Simulation results shows that the presence of STATCOM on transmission line greatly affects the measured impedance at the relaying point.
