Item A method to generate a single sub-50-as pulse by employing a 5-fs laser pulse with intensity above the saturation intensity, was proposed. The neon target medium of 0.5 mm length and 5 Torr pressure, was placed 10 mm beyond the laser focus. Harmonic radiation from neon atoms, was obtained by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation coupled with Maxwell equations. The results show that the positive chirp contained in the broad continuum radiation can be compensated by an x-ray filter with a negative group delay dispersion in the spectral region of interest.(American Physical Society, Single sub-50-attosecond pulse generation from chirp-compensated harmonic radiation using material dispersion) Kim, K.T.; Kim, C.M.; Baik, M.G.; Umesh, G.; Nam, C.H.2004Item Nonlinear optical studies of 1-3-diaryl-propenones containing 4-methylthiophenyl moieties(2007) John Kiran, A.; Mithun, A.; Shivarama Holla, B.; Shashikala, H.D.; Umesh, G.; Chandrasekharan, K.The third-order nonlinear optical properties of chalcone derivatives have been studied using the single beam Z-scan technique. The dependence of ?(3) on different donor and acceptor type substituents demonstrates the electronic nonlinearity of compounds. The largest value of nonlinear refractive index, n2, measured for a high electron donor substituted molecule is -2.033 × 10-11 esu. These molecules exhibit a strong two-photon absorption and interesting optical limiting of nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The measurements were carried out using a Q-switched, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser producing 7 nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. Z-scan results reveal that the composite films exhibit self-defocusing nonlinearity. The real and imaginary parts of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility were of the order 10-12 esu. The effective excited-state absorption cross section was found to be larger than the ground state absorption cross section, indicating that the operating nonlinear mechanism is reverse saturable absorption (RSA). The polythiophene composite films also exhibit good optical power limiting of the nanosecond laser pulses. The nonlinear optical parameters are found to increase on increasing the strength of the electron-donor group, indicating the dependence of ? (3) on the electron-donor/acceptor units of polythiophenes. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.Item Ultrafast nonlinear optical properties of dye-doped PMMA discs irradiated by 40 fs laser pulses(2009) Xia, Y.; Jiang, Y.; Fan, R.; Dong, Z.; Zhao, W.; Chen, D.; Umesh, G.The two-photon absorption (TPA) characteristics of PMMA discs doped with three different dyes were studied using an fs-pulsed Ti-Sapphire laser as the pump source, and employing the open-aperture Z-scan technique. TPA cross-sections obtained for PMMA doped with the dyes PM597, DCM and rhodamine 6G-rhodamine B (co-doped) were found to be equal to 24.7, 33.3 and 32.3 GM, respectively (1 GM=10-50 cm4 s phot-1 mol-1). Furthermore, two-photon fluorescence was measured for the samples containing DCM and rhodamine 6G-rhodamine B (co-doped). Compared to the one-photon fluorescence spectrum, the peaks in the two-photon fluorescence spectrum were red shifted and the extent of red shift increased with increasing doping concentration. We have also observed that the red shift in the two-photon fluorescence peak of the samples in the solid form is much larger than that in the solution state. This phenomenon could be explained by a twisted intra-molecular charge transfer model. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption coefficient, magnitude of effective third-order susceptibility and coupling factor were determined. The optical power limiting behavior of the colorants was ascribed to two-photon absorption phenomenon. Nonlinear absorption cross-section increased with increase in ? electron density and the effective two-photon absorption cross-section was two orders of magnitude larger than those of commercially available azo compounds. The results suggest that these colorants offer promise as nonlinear optical materials for device applications. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Z-scan results reveal that the Bischalcones exhibits negative nonlinear refractive index as high as 10-11 esu. The molecular two-photon absorption cross-section ?2? of Bischalcones were of the order 10-46 cm4 s/photon, which is nearly two orders of magnitude larger than that of Rhodamine 6G which is 10-48 - 10-50 cm4 s/photon. We found that, the two-photon absorption (TPA) is the dominating nonlinear process leading to nonlinear absorption in both the cases in solution and as well as in solid medium. Based on TPA process, the Bischalcones exhibit good optical power limiting of nanosecond laser pulses at the input wavelength. The nonlinear optical parameters found to increase on enhancing the strength of the electron donor groups indicating the dependence and importance of electron donor/acceptor units on third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility ?(3). © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Open aperture data obtained from the three compounds indicates two photon absorption at this wavelength. The nonlinear refractive index n2, the nonlinear absorption coefficient ?, the magnitude of the effective third order susceptibility ?(3), the second order hyperpolarizability ?h and the coupling factor ? have been estimated. The values obtained are comparable with the values obtained for 4-methoxy chalcone derivatives and dibenzylidene acetone derivatives. Among the compounds studied, compounds-1 and 3 exhibited the better optical power limiting behaviour at 532 nm. Our studies suggest that compounds-1, 2 and 3 are potential candidates for optical device applications such as optical limiters and optical switches. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Harmonics, ranging from 9th to 21st orders generated in Kr with 25 fs laser pulses at 820 nm, were employed to carry out photoionization of O2. Distinct autoionization features in the photoelectron spectrum, stemming from the resonant excitation of superexcited states of O2 by the 11th harmonic, were observed. The superexcited states, referred to as autoionizing states, were identified to be the ?? = 0, n = 5 Rydberg states converging to the b 4?g- state of O 2+. Infrared laser pulses were utilized as the probe to monitor time-varying characteristics of photoionization and autoionization of O2. A decay time of 21 fs was obtained for the autoionizing states of O2 by deconvoluting the pump-probe results in O2 and Ar. © 2013 American Physical Society.
