Third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of new copolymers containing alternate 3,4-dialkoxythiophene and (1,3,4-oxadiazolyl)pyridine moieties
    (Elsevier, 2009) Hegde, P.K.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.; Manjunatha, M.G.; Poornesh, P.; Umesh, G.
A new series of conjugated copolymers (P1-P3) consisting of alternate 3,4-dialkoxythiophene and (1,3,4-oxadiazolyl)pyridine moieties have been synthesized using the precursor polyhydrazide route. They have been characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR spectral and elemental analyses. These copolymers possess well defined structure and exhibit good thermal stability with the onset decomposition temperature in nitrogen at around 300 °C. Their molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The optical and charge-transporting properties of the copolymers were investigated by UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Their UV-visible absorption spectra showed a ?max at around 342 nm and displayed bluish-green fluorescence in solution state. The band gaps were found to be at about 2.55 eV for all the copolymers. The third-order nonlinear optical properties (NLO) of these copolymers were studied by Z-scan technique. The measurements were performed at 532 nm with 7 ns laser pulses using a Nd:YAG laser in solution form. The real part of ?(3) were estimated to be -0.881 × 10-12, -0.901 × 10-12 and -1.030 × 10-12 esu for P1, P2 and P3 respectively. The imaginary part of ?(3) for the copolymers P1, P2 and P3 were determined to be 0.192 × 10-12, 0.253 × 10-12 and 0.272 × 10-12 esu respectively. The copolymers exhibit strong reverse saturable absorption and good optical limiting behaviour at 532 nm. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nonlinear optical studies on 1,3-disubstituent chalcones doped polymer films
    (Elsevier, 2009) Poornesh, P.; Shettigar, S.; Umesh, G.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Prakash Kamath, K.; Sarojini, B.K.; Narayana, B.
We report the measurements of the third-order nonlinear optical properties of recently synthesized and characterized two different 1,3-disubstituent chalcones doped PMMA films, with the prospective of reaching a good compromise between processability and high nonlinear optical properties. The measurements were done using nanosecond Z-scan at 532 nm. The Z-scan spectra reveal a large negative nonlinear refraction coefficient n2 of the order 10-11 esu and the molecular two photon absorption cross section is 10-46 cm4 s/photon. The doped films exhibit good optical power limiting property under nanosecond regime and the two photon absorption (TPA) is the dominating process leading to the nonlinear behavior. The improvement in the nonlinear properties has been observed when methylenedioxy group is replaced by dimethoxy group due to increase in conjugation length. The observed nonlinear parameters of chalcone derivatives doped PMMA film is comparable with stilbazolieum derivatives, a well-known class of optical materials for photonics and biophotonics applications, which suggests that, these moieties have potential for the application of all-optical limiting and switching devices. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of novel styryl dyes
    (2009) Shettigar, S.; Umesh, G.; Poornesh, P.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Asiri, A.M.
The third-order nonlinear optical properties of two novel styryl dyes, namely, 1,3-diethyl-5-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione and 5-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)-1,3-diethyl-2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione were studied using the Z-scan technique employing 7 ns laser pulses at 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption coefficient, magnitude of effective third-order susceptibility and coupling factor were determined. The optical power limiting behavior of the colorants was ascribed to two-photon absorption phenomenon. Nonlinear absorption cross-section increased with increase in ? electron density and the effective two-photon absorption cross-section was two orders of magnitude larger than those of commercially available azo compounds. The results suggest that these colorants offer promise as nonlinear optical materials for device applications. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nonlinear optical and optical power limiting studies on a new thiophene-based conjugated polymer in solution and solid PMMA matrix
    (2010) Poornesh, P.; Hegde, P.K.; Umesh, G.; Manjunatha, M.G.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.
An experimental investigation of the third-order nonlinear optical properties of new poly{2-{5-[3,4-ditetradecyloxy-5-(1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl]-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl}pyridine} (P) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution and in solid poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, by Z-scan technique is reported. The Z-scan traces reveal that the composite films exhibit large negative nonlinear refractive index of the order 10-10 esu. The excited-state absorption cross-section was found to be larger than the ground-state absorption indicating that the operating nonlinear process is reverse saturable absorption (RSA). The new polymer P exhibits good optical power limiting properties in the nanosecond regime in solution and as well in solid PMMA matrix. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thermally induced nonlinear optical response and optical power limiting of acid blue 40 dye
    (Elsevier B.V., 2013) Pramodini, S.; Poornesh, P.; Nagaraja, K.K.
We report the investigations of thermally induced third-order nonlinear optical and optical limiting characterizations for various concentrations of acid blue 40 dye in N,N-Dimethyl Formamide, studied by employing z-scan technique under cw He-Ne laser irradiation at 633 nm wavelength. The samples exhibited nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction under the experimental conditions. For lower concentration, the samples display both saturable absorption (SA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA); whereas with increase in concentration, RSA behaviour prevails. The estimated values of the effective coefficients of nonlinear absorption ?eff, nonlinear refraction n2 and third-order nonlinear susceptibility ?(3) were found to be of the order of 10-2 cm/W, 10-4 esu and 10-6 esu respectively. Multiple diffraction rings were observed when the samples were exposed to laser beam due to refractive index change and thermal lensing. The effect of concentration and the laser intensity on the self-diffraction ring patterns was studied experimentally. The acid blue 40 dye also exhibited strong optical limiting properties under cw excitation and reverse saturable absorption is found to be the dominant nonlinear optical process leading to the observed nonlinear behaviour. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Influence of annealing on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of Mn doped ZnO thin films examined by z-scan technique in CW regime
    (Elsevier B.V., 2016) Nagaraja, K.K.; Pramodini, S.; Poornesh, P.; Rao, A.; Nagaraja, H.S.
We present the studies on the influence of annealing on the third-order nonlinear optical properties of RF magnetron sputtered manganese doped zinc oxide (MZO) thin films with different doping concentration. It is revealed that the incorporation of Mn into ZnO and annealing lead to prominent changes in the third order nonlinearity. Nonlinear optical measurements were carried out by employing the z-scan technique using a continuous wave (CW) He-Ne laser of 633 nm. The z-scan results reveal that the films exhibit self-defocusing thermal nonlinearity. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility ?(3) was found to be of the order of 10-3 esu and 10-2 esu for annealed MZO thin films at 200 °C and 400 °C respectively. The dependence of grain size on the observed nonlinearity was revealed by atomic force microscopy analysis. Optical limiting studies were carried out for a range of input power levels and an optical limiting of about ?8 mW was observed indicating the possible application for photonic devices. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. All-optical switching and limiting properties of a Ru (II) Schiff-base complex for nonlinear optical applications
    (Institute of Physics Publishing michael.roberts@iop.org, 2017) Manjunatha, K.B.; Rajarao, R.; Umesh, G.; Badekai Ramachandra, B.R.; Poornesh, P.
A salen-based ruthenium (Ru) (II) complex was synthesized for possible use in nonlinear optical device applications. The Ru complex was doped in a polymer matrix to fabricate films using a low-cost spin-coating technique. The third-order nonlinear optical parameters of the complex were investigated by Z-scan and degenerate four-wave mixing techniques. The study reveals two-order enhancement of third-order optical susceptibility ? (3) and exhibits superior limiting capability due to a reverse saturable absorption process. All-optical switching action for the films indicates that the sample can function as an optical inverter or a NOT gate. Hence, the Ru (II) Schiff-base complex materializes as a possible candidate for use in nonlinear optical devices. © 2017 Astro Ltd.

Optical nonlinearity, limiting and switching characteristics of novel ruthenium metal-organic complex
    (Elsevier B.V., 2017) Manjunatha, K.B.; Rajarao, R.; Umesh, G.; Badekai Ramachandra, B.R.; Poornesh, P.
We report the nonlinear optical properties of Ruthenium metal complex a promising organic material for use in scientific and technological applications. The thin films of newly synthesized ruthenium metal–organic complex were fabricated using spin coating technique. Z-scan and degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) techniques used to extract the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) parameters. The data reveals the investigated material exhibited relatively large NLO properties. The pump–probe experiments shows that the switch-on and off times of the material were in the order of ?s at different pump intensities and the energy dependent transmission studies reveal good limiting property of the material in nanosecond regime. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Enhanced photostability and optical nonlinearity of nickel and cobalt organometallic complexes
    (Elsevier B.V., 2019) Manjunatha, K.B.; Rajarao, R.; Poornesh, P.; Rudresha, B.J.; Umesh, G.; Badekai Ramachandra, B.R.
Nonlinear optical and limiting properties of nickel, cobalt metal-organic complexes and ligand (L) {L = N,N?-o-phenylenebis (4-hyrdoxy-salicylideneimine)} were studied using Z-scan technique using Q-switched Nd: YAG laser with nanosecond pulses at 532 nm. The results reveal that metal complexes exhibit large negative nonlinear refractive index (n2) of the order of 10?11 esu. The metal complexes displays large nonlinearity than the ligand due to effective charge delocalization between metal ion and ligand. The magnitude of ground state absorption cross section is small compared to the effective excited-state absorption cross section implying the observed nonlinearity is due to reverse saturable absorption. Further, metal-organic complexes exhibit enhanced optical limiting behaviour at nanosecond laser pulses. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Continuous wave laser probed thermal nonlinearity in TiO2 and TiO2-dye nano colloidal
    (Elsevier Ltd, 2021) Pramodini, S.; Aravinda, L.S.; Nagaraja, K.K.; Poornesh, P.
Herein, we report on the nonlinear optical studies on the nano colloidal solutions of titanium dioxide (TiO2), TiO2-dye and acid blue dye in distilled water under continuous wave laser using the z-scan technique. The phase and structural properties of the sol–gel synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles at different temperatures were analyzed by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) studies. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed that with an increase in calcination temperature, crystallite size increases. Further, the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra validate the synthesized TiO2 nano particle's structure. The results from the z-scan reveal self-defocusing and reverse saturable absorption (RSA) behaviors of nano colloidal. The real and imaginary parts of third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility ?(3) were determined and estimated as 10?6 esu. Also, the optical limiting behavior of the samples is studied; a clamping of around ~ 4 mW is observed for the TiO2-dye nano colloidal. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd
