The third-order nonlinear optical properties of novel styryl dyes
    (2009) Shettigar, S.; Umesh, G.; Poornesh, P.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Asiri, A.M.
The third-order nonlinear optical properties of two novel styryl dyes, namely, 1,3-diethyl-5-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione and 5-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)-1,3-diethyl-2-thioxodihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione were studied using the Z-scan technique employing 7 ns laser pulses at 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption coefficient, magnitude of effective third-order susceptibility and coupling factor were determined. The optical power limiting behavior of the colorants was ascribed to two-photon absorption phenomenon. Nonlinear absorption cross-section increased with increase in ? electron density and the effective two-photon absorption cross-section was two orders of magnitude larger than those of commercially available azo compounds. The results suggest that these colorants offer promise as nonlinear optical materials for device applications. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nonlinear optical and optical power limiting studies on a new thiophene-based conjugated polymer in solution and solid PMMA matrix
    (2010) Poornesh, P.; Hegde, P.K.; Umesh, G.; Manjunatha, M.G.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.
An experimental investigation of the third-order nonlinear optical properties of new poly{2-{5-[3,4-ditetradecyloxy-5-(1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl]-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl}pyridine} (P) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution and in solid poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, by Z-scan technique is reported. The Z-scan traces reveal that the composite films exhibit large negative nonlinear refractive index of the order 10-10 esu. The excited-state absorption cross-section was found to be larger than the ground-state absorption indicating that the operating nonlinear process is reverse saturable absorption (RSA). The new polymer P exhibits good optical power limiting properties in the nanosecond regime in solution and as well in solid PMMA matrix. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

3,3?-Benzene-1,4-diylbis[1-(substituted)phenylprop-2-en-1-one] derivatives: A new class of materials for third-order nonlinear optical applications
    (2010) Poornesh, P.; Ravi, K.; Umesh, G.; Hegde, P.K.; Manjunatha, M.G.; Manjunatha, K.B.; Vasudeva Adhikari, A.V.
We have investigated the third-order nonlinear optical parameters of Bischalcones embedded in DMF solution and in solid PMMA matrix, by Z-scan technique using nanosecond laser pulse trains at 532 nm. Z-scan results reveal that the Bischalcones exhibits negative nonlinear refractive index as high as 10-11 esu. The molecular two-photon absorption cross-section ?2? of Bischalcones were of the order 10-46 cm4 s/photon, which is nearly two orders of magnitude larger than that of Rhodamine 6G which is 10-48 - 10-50 cm4 s/photon. We found that, the two-photon absorption (TPA) is the dominating nonlinear process leading to nonlinear absorption in both the cases in solution and as well as in solid medium. Based on TPA process, the Bischalcones exhibit good optical power limiting of nanosecond laser pulses at the input wavelength. The nonlinear optical parameters found to increase on enhancing the strength of the electron donor groups indicating the dependence and importance of electron donor/acceptor units on third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility ?(3). © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Investigation of third-order nonlinear optical properties of conjugated benzodioxal derivatives
    (2010) Shettigar, S.; Poornesh, P.; Umesh, G.; Sarojini, B.K.; Narayana, B.; Prakash Kamath, K.
An investigation of third-order nonlinear optical characterization of newly synthesized conjugated benzodioxal derivatives has been done by using nanosecond Z-scan technique at 532 nm. The molecules demonstrate self-defocusing effect with intensity dependent refractive index (n2) of the order of 10-14 cm2/W. The measured molecular TPA cross-section is ranging from 2.47 ×10-47 cm4 s/photon to 6.00 cm4 s/photon. Their input-output curves indicate that there is a clear optical power limiting behavior with the limiting threshold in the range 125-181 ?J. The main factor to exhibit the observed nonlinearity in these molecules is the presence of charge donor and acceptor groups. The increased conjugation length increases the nonlinear refraction and increased electron density enhances the nonlinear absorption. The molecules exhibit good nonlinear optical properties, comparable to those of regular azoaromatic compounds. Therefore, the molecules investigated here are promising candidates for optical power limiting devices. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effect of annealing on the structural and nonlinear optical properties of ZnO thin films under cw regime
    (2013) Nagaraja, K.K.; Pramodini, S.; Poornesh, P.; Nagaraja, H.S.
We report on the studies of the effects of annealing on the structural and third-order nonlinear optical properties of ZnO thin films deposited on quartz substrates by the RF magnetron sputtering technique. The films were annealed in the temperature range 400-1000 °C. The third-order nonlinear optical studies were carried out using the z-scan technique under continuous wave (cw) He-Ne laser irradiation at 633 nm wavelength. The effects of annealing on the structural properties were examined using x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The (0 0 2) preferred orientation increased with increase in annealing temperature up to 800 °C. The crystalline phases of SiO2 were observed at higher annealing temperatures. The appearance of an extraneous phase was confirmed by AFM images and optical transmittance spectra. The samples exhibited nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction under the experimental conditions. The negative sign of the nonlinear refractive index n2 indicated that the films exhibit self-defocusing property due to thermal nonlinearity. The nonlinear refractive index n2, the nonlinear absorption coefficient ?eff and the third-order optical susceptibility ?(3) were found to be of the highest orders. The estimated value of third-order optical susceptibility ?(3) was of the order of 10-3 esu. Multiple diffraction rings were observed when the samples were exposed to the laser beam. The appearance of rings was due to the refractive index change and thermal lensing. With increase in laser intensity, the variations of the self-diffraction ring patterns were studied experimentally. The films also exhibited strong optical limiting properties under cw laser excitation, and reverse saturable absorption was the dominant process leading to the observed nonlinear behaviour. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Third harmonic generation process in Al doped ZnO thin films
    (2014) Abd-Lefdil, M.; Douayar, A.; Belayachi, A.; Reshak, A.H.; Fedorchuk, A.O.; Pramodini, S.; Poornesh, P.; Nagaraja, K.K.; Nagaraja, H.S.
We have performed studies on the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of Al doped ZnO (AZO) thin films using z-scan and third harmonic generation techniques. From the present studies, it reveals that the introduction of Al in ZnO leads to substantial changes in the third-order nonlinear susceptibility. Additionally we have shown that using treatment by the 707 nm laser pulses of the Er:glass 20 ns laser also influence on the third harmonic generation. Such behavior is explained by the photoinduced charge re-occupation of the trapping levels on the borders substrate and ZnO. Further, the sign and magnitude of nonlinear absorption coefficient ?eff, nonlinear refractive index n2, real and imaginary parts of third-order nonlinear susceptibility were evaluated. Finally, the optical limiting studies for various concentrations of AZO thin films were determined. Reverse saturable absorption was the dominant process leading to the observed nonlinear behavior. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Structural, linear, and nonlinear optical properties of radio frequency-sputtered nitrogen-doped ZnO thin films studied using z-scan technique
    (Institute of Physics Publishing custserv@iop.org, 2014) Nagaraja, K.K.; Pramodini, S.; Santhosh Kumar, A.S.; Nagaraja, H.S.; Poornesh, P.
The third-order nonlinear optical properties of undoped and nitrogen-doped ZnO thin films were evaluated using the z-scan technique. The films were sputter-deposited on glass substrates using radio frequency power. The He-Ne continuous wave laser operating at 633 nm was used as an irradiation source. A change in the growth mode in the nitrogen-doped films was observed. The grain size and roughness were found to be dependent on the nitrogen concentration, as shown by atomic force microscopy analysis. The optical band gap was determined and found to increase with nitrogen concentration in the films. Both nonlinear absorption and refraction nonlinearities were exhibited by the deposited films. The nonlinear refractive index n2, the nonlinear absorption coefficient ?eff and the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility ?(3) were determined and found to be largest. Multiple diffraction ring patterns were observed when the samples were made to interact with the laser beam and were attributed to refractive index change and thermal lensing. Further, optical power-limiting experiments were performed to determine the optical-limiting threshold and clamping values for undoped and nitrogen-doped ZnO films. © 2014 Astro Ltd.

Enhanced photostability and optical nonlinearity of nickel and cobalt organometallic complexes
    (Elsevier B.V., 2019) Manjunatha, K.B.; Rajarao, R.; Poornesh, P.; Rudresha, B.J.; Umesh, G.; Badekai Ramachandra, B.R.
Nonlinear optical and limiting properties of nickel, cobalt metal-organic complexes and ligand (L) {L = N,N?-o-phenylenebis (4-hyrdoxy-salicylideneimine)} were studied using Z-scan technique using Q-switched Nd: YAG laser with nanosecond pulses at 532 nm. The results reveal that metal complexes exhibit large negative nonlinear refractive index (n2) of the order of 10?11 esu. The metal complexes displays large nonlinearity than the ligand due to effective charge delocalization between metal ion and ligand. The magnitude of ground state absorption cross section is small compared to the effective excited-state absorption cross section implying the observed nonlinearity is due to reverse saturable absorption. Further, metal-organic complexes exhibit enhanced optical limiting behaviour at nanosecond laser pulses. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.
