3-Methyl-4-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole as corrosion inhibitor for 6061 Al alloy in 0.5 M sodium hydroxide solution
(Springer New York LLC barbara.b.bertram@gsk.com, 2011) Kumari, P.D.R.; Nayak, J.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.
3-Methyl-4-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (MAMT) was synthesized, and its inhibition action on the corrosion of 6061 Al alloy in 0.5 M sodium hydroxide was investigated by means of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. The effect of inhibitor concentration, temperature, and concentration of the corrosion medium on the inhibitor action was investigated. The surface morphology of the metal surface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The inhibition efficiency increased with the increase in the concentration of the inhibitor, but decreased with the increase in temperature. Both thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were calculated and discussed. The adsorption of MAMT on the base alloy was found to be through physisorption, obeying Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. The results obtained from both the techniques were in good agreement with each other. © 2011 ACA and OCCA.

3,4-Dimethoxybenzaldehydethiosemicarbazone as corrosion inhibitor for aged 18 Ni 250 grade maraging steel in 0.5 M sulfuric acid
    (2011) Poornima, T.; Nayak, J.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.
The corrosion inhibition of the aged 18 Ni 250 grade maraging steel in 0.5 M sulfuric acid by 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehydethiosemicarbazone(DMBTSC) has been investigated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) techniques. The inhibition efficiency increased with the increase in inhibitor concentration and decreased with the increase in temperature. Polarization curves indicated mixed type inhibition behavior affecting both cathodic and anodic corrosion currents. The thermodynamic parameters of corrosion and adsorption processes were evaluated. The adsorption of DMBTSC on the aged maraging steel surface was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, and the calculated Gibb's free energy values confirm the spontaneous adsorption. The results obtained by the two techniques were in good agreement. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

The corrosion inhibition of maraging steel under weld aged condition by 1(2E)-1-(4-Aminophenyl)-3-(2-Thienyl)prop-2-en-1-one in 1.5 M hydrochloric acid medium
(Springer New York LLC barbara.b.bertram@gsk.com, 2012) Sanatkumar, B.S.; Nayak, J.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.
The influence of 1(2E)-1-(4-Aminophenyl)- 3-(2-Thienyl)prop-2-en-1-one (ATPI) on the corrosion behavior of weld aged maraging steel in 1.5 M hydrochloric acid was studied by potentiodynamic polarization method and AC impedance (EIS) technique at different temperatures. The results showed that the inhibition efficiency of ATPI increased with the increase in the concentration of inhibitor and decreased with the increase in temperature. ATPI acts as a mixed type inhibitor without affecting the mechanism of the hydrogen evolution reaction or iron dissolution. The adsorption of ATPI on a weld aged maraging steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation. Both activation and thermodynamic parameters were calculated and discussed. ATPI inhibits the corrosion through both physisorption and chemisorption on the alloy surface. The surface morphology of the weld aged maraging steel specimens in the presence and the absence of the inhibitors was studied by the respective SEM images. © ACA and OCCA 2011.

Eco-friendly benzimidazolium based ionic liquid as a corrosion inhibitor for aluminum alloy composite in acidic media
    (Elsevier B.V., 2017) Kshama, S.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.
A novel, relatively inexpensive ionic liquid, 1.3-bis[2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-oxoethyl]-1H–benzimidazol-3-ium bromide (MOBB), was synthesized and characterized using FTIR, NMR, LC-MS and single crystal XRD (SCXRD) techniques. MOBB was evaluated for its corrosion inhibition properties on 6061 Al-15 vol% SiC (P) composite in 0.1 M HCl and 0.1 M H2SO4 media at different temperatures (30–50 °C) by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization methods. The adsorption of MOBB on the composite was predominantly through chemisorption, obeying Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Inhibition efficiencies of 98.7% in HCl and 98.8% in H2SO4 were obtained, MOBB acting as a mixed type of inhibitor with predominant cathodic control. © 2016

Stearate as a green corrosion inhibitor of magnesium alloy ZE41 in sulfate medium
    (Elsevier B.V., 2019) Dindodi, N.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.
The efficiency of stearate as a corrosion inhibitor for magnesium alloy ZE41 has been studied in sodium sulfate medium, employing electrochemical techniques like potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of polarization study imply that stearate functions as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor with a predominant anodic control. The adsorption of stearate on alloy surface is found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The proposed inhibition mechanism involved adsorption of stearate onto metal surface, followed by precipitation of magnesium stearate within the microdefects of Mg(OH)2 surface film which enhanced the barrier effect of an otherwise porous partially protective film. © 2014 The Authors

Enhancement of Anticorrosion Properties of Epoxy Based Primer Coating by Bis[[3,4-Dihydroxyphenylmethylene] carbonothioicdihydrazide] on AA2024-T3 Alloy
    (Pleiades journals compmg@maik.ru, 2020) Prakashaiah, B.G.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.; Amitha Rani, B.E.A.
Abstract: A corrosion inhibitor bis[[3,4-dihydroxyphenylmethylene]carbonothioicdihydrazide] (DCT) was synthesized and used to improve the corrosion resistance of an epoxy based primer coating on AA2024-T3 alloy in NaCl solution. The ability of DCT to inhibit the corrosion was evaluated by electrochemical studies. The compound exhibited an inhibition efficiency of 99%. The surfaces of the corroded specimens were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The anticorrosion nature of the substrate coated with a commercial epoxy-based primer doped with DCT was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and a salt spray test. The results established not only the ability of DCT to improve the anticorrosion property of the epoxy based primer coating on AA2024-T3 alloy but also a sustained corrosion protection (1000 h) of the alloy. © 2020, Allerton Press, Inc.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies on an Anionic Gemini Surfactant as Corrosion Inhibitor for AZ31 Magnesium Alloy
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022) Acharya, M.G.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.
Abstract: Sodium 2,2′-(13,22-dimethyl-14,21-dioxo-13,16,19,22-tetraazatetratriacontane-16,19-diyl)diacetate anionic Gemini surfactant was synthesized and utilized as a corrosion inhibitor for AZ31 alloy. The corrosion inhibition property was investigated using electrochemical methods. The surface investigation of the alloy was achieved using SEM–EDX and XPS. The strength of inhibitor to inhibit corrosion depends on the surfactant concentration, the higher inhibition efficiency was exhibited when the surfactant concentration was higher. The inhibitor appeared as a mixed-type inhibitor. The inhibiting effect of Gemini surfactant showed rapid adsorption on the alloy surface. The experimental results were related to the theoretical findings obtained from the studies based on density function theory (DFT). Performance of anionic dimeric surfactant on AZ31 Magnesium alloy in neutral medium unveiled through experimental and theoretical investigation
    (Springer, 2024) Acharya, M.G.; Nityananda Shetty, A.N.
The synthesis of a novel eco-friendly anionic Gemini surfactant, pursuing three parameters of green chemistry: economic, environmental factor, and mass reaction efficiency is developed as a corrosion inhibitor for AZ31 Mg alloy. Herein, the corrosion inhibition ability of novel EDTA-based dimeric surfactant on AZ31 Mg alloy in corrosive media with varying concentrations of NaCl and Na2SO4 at temperatures between 30–50 °C were studied. The surfactant’s molecular structure is affirmed by FT-IR, NMR, and LC–MS techniques. Electrochemical techniques and surface morphology were employed to evaluate the corrosion inhibition efficiency. The inhibitor studied exhibited appreciable corrosion inhibition at 30 °C. The surfactant shows physical adsorption as per the data obtained in the Gibbs free energy and enthalpy of adsorption studies. The adsorption of the inhibitor was found to be a film-like layer on the surface of AZ31 Mg alloy and, is confirmed by SEM–EDX and XPS techniques. In addition, theoretical simulations were performed to compare with experimental results. Conclusively, the work provides a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in the development of a new anionic dimeric surfactant as an effective corrosion inhibitor. © The Author(s) 2024.
