Item Joining of Inconel-625 alloy through microwave hybrid heating and its characterization(Elsevier Ltd, 2015) Badiger, R.I.; Narendranath, S.; Srinath, M.S.Joining of bulk metals using microwave energy is being explored as a new processing method in the era of high technology applications. The present work investigates the results of on-going project in which joining of Inconel-625 alloy has been effectively carried out through microwave hybrid heating. Characterization of the microwave developed joints is done through SEM, XRD, UTM and Vicker's microhardness tester. The microstructural analysis through scanning electron microscope exhibits a fully fused weld interface free from interfacial cracks. XRD study reveals the formation of carbides of Ni, Cr and Mo in the joint interface. The average Vicker's microhardness in the joint region observed was 360 ± 20 Hv. Assessment of tensile strength shows an ultimate tensile strength of 328 MPa with 9.04% elongation. Further the fractured joints are subjected to fractography study which possibly reveals a mixed mode fracture. © 2015 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Item Microstructure and mechanical properties of Inconel-625 welded joint developed through microwave hybrid heating(SAGE Publications Ltd info@sagepub.co.uk, 2018) Badiger, R.I.; Narendranath, S.; Srinath, M.S.Application of microwave energy for processing of bulk metals is effectively utilized to join Inconel-625 plates through hybrid heating technique using Inconel-625 powder as an interface filler material. Post welding characterization of microwave developed joints through X-ray diffraction shows the development of carbides of niobium and chromium as well as intermetallic phases along with the primary ?-phase face-centered cubic matrix. Microstructural examination reveals the formation of Laves phase along the grain boundaries in the fusion zone. Microwave-induced joints exhibit average microhardness of 245 ± 20 HV and 0.7% porosity in the fusion zone. Average ultimate tensile strength and flexural strength of the developed joints were estimated at 375 and 377 MPa respectively. Average impact toughness of microwave-induced joints is observed to be 18 J. © IMechE 2017.Item Effect of low temperature annealing on the properties of nano Ni-Ti alloys(Institute of Physics Publishing helen.craven@iop.org, 2019) Mukunda, S.; Mahesh, M.; Narendranath, S.; Herbert, M.A.Binary 1:1 Ni-Ti alloy has been the work horse for many industrial and of late biomedical applications amongst all shape memory alloys. Apart from being employed for endovascular applications like stents and filters, they are also used as orthodontic braces and in endodontic tools. Ni-Ti drills and files are used in a few procedures with sterilization between uses. However, the effect of these sterilizing heat-treatments on the properties of the tools is not clearly investigated. In addition to this, satisfactory metallurgical explanations for the wear resistance of these alloys in absent in the literature. Therefore, this paper attempts to define the transformational temperatures for the Ni-Ti as-received and low temperature heat-treated conditions have been investigated using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Attempts are made to justify their suitability for endodontic applications by evaluating their mechanical strength parameters using the Tensile and Wear tests. It was found that the samples showed did not show much variations in strength when subjected to tensile tests whereas the same was not observed for DSC tests. Ambient temperature x-ray diffraction studies indicate the presence of Austenitic and Martensitic phases in all the samples. DSC results are strongly affected by presence of internal stresses but stress-induced-martensitic forms in all the samples with equal facility. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.Item Microstructure, Hardness and Tensile Properties of Friction Stir Welded Aluminum Matrix Composite Reinforced with SiC and Fly Ash(Springer editorial@springerplus.com, 2019) Patil, S.; Narendranath, S.; Dupadu, D.In the present work, aluminum alloy 6061/SiC/fly ash aluminum matrix composites were welded successfully using friction stir welding process. Microstructure of weld joints was examined using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Mechanical properties namely, microhardness and ultimate tensile strength of the joints were studied. The results were correlated to microstructural changes caused by friction stir welding process. Microstructure in the stirred zone exhibits the uniform distribution of SiC and fly ash particles. Especially fine grains were formed on the advancing side than on the retreating side, due to the different variation between tool direction and welding direction. Higher hardness value is observed on the advancing side (132 Hv) than on the retreating side (124 Hv). Transverse tensile test of weld sample exhibits higher joint efficiency of 85.06% with respect to ultimate tensile strength. Fracture study reveals ductile mode of failure. Weld joints got fractured in heat affected zone on the retreating side, which indicates the weakest part of the weld joint. Based on thermodynamic analysis, the optimum heat input was found to be 756 J mm?1, resulting in higher strength of weld joints due to uniform distribution of reinforcement particles in the nugget zone. © 2018, Springer Nature B.V.Item Analysing the combined effect of crystallographic orientation and grain refinement on mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour of ECAPed ZE41 Mg alloy(National Engg. Reaserch Center for Magnesium Alloys, 2020) Sekar, S.; Narendranath, S.; Desai, V.Two step equal channel angular pressing carried out on as cast ZE41 Mg alloy resulted in a remarkable grain refinement. As compared to grain size of 46 µm in as cast sample, refinement upto 2.5 µm was achieved after 8th pass equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). The combined effect of crystallographic orientation and grain refinement was investigated by analysing the mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour of ZE41 Mg alloy using electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD). The first stage comprises of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th passes at a processing temperature of 300 °C while the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th passes were ECAPed at 275 °C in second stage. The mechanical properties of ZE41 Mg 158 yield tensile strength (YTS), 230 ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and 7% elongation in as cast condition is enhanced to 236 YTS, 295 UTS and 19.76%, respectively, after first stage ECAP. The yield tensile strength deteriorated due to the effect of texture predominating grain refinement during the second stage ECAP. The corrosion resistance of ZE41 Mg was significantly enhanced by ECAP and is inferred from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarisation results .The role of microstructure was minimal on corrosion behaviour of ZE41 Mg due to extra resistance when tested in 0 M NaCl. However, the influence of grain refinement greatly influenced the improvement in corrosion resistance of ZE41 Mg rather than crystallographic orientation observed from EBSD. In contrast, the crystallographic orientation predominated the effect of grain refinement during ZE41 Mg corrosion in chloride containing (0.1 M and 1 M NaCl) solutions. From the observation of results it is found that equal channel angular pressing has the dual advantage of improving mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of ZE41 Mg alloy. © 2020
