Item Low cost in-pipe leak detection robot(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2016) Kulgod, S.P.; Srinidhi, S.; Awasthi, S.S.In this paper we work towards a new prototype for an inexpensive in-pipe leak detection system. Our proposed robotic system is able to detect leaks in pipes in a reliable and autonomous fashion. The robotic system inspects the network and sends leak signals wirelessly. The detection principle is based on the presence of a pressure gradient in the neighborhood of a leak in the pressurized pipe. This pressure gradient is translated into force and hence a displacement by means of a lever which comes in contact with a conducting core to produce a signal. Length and shape of the lever are changed to study the change in sensitivity. © 2016 IEEE.Item Detection and analysis model for grammatical facial expressions in sign language(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2016) Bhuvan, M.S.; Rao, D.V.; Jain, S.; Ashwin, T.S.; Guddeti, G.R.; Kulgod, S.P.The proposed research explores a relatively new area of expression detection through facial points in a sign language to enhance the computer interaction with the deaf and hard of hearing. The research mainly focuses on facial points collected from Kinect as basis for expression detection as opposed to numerous gesture based studies on sign language. This helps in deploying the applications in smart phones as it is feasible to capture facial point easily rather than hand gestures. Exhaustive experimentation is carried out with ten different machine learning algorithms for detecting nine different types of expression modeled as different binary classification problem for each expression. This is done for user dependent model and user independent model scenarios. The optimal classifier for each expression is found to outperform the current state-of-the-art techniques and has ROC area greater than 0.95 for each expression. It is found that user independent model's performance is comparable to user dependent model, hence is suggested as it is easy and efficient to deploy in practical applications. Finally, the importance of each facial point in detecting each type of expression has been mined, which can be instrumental for future research and for various application using facial points as basis for decision making. © 2016 IEEE.Item Simulation and analysis of energy harvesting from grey water and rain water in high rises(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2016) Kumar, K.R.; Kulgod, S.P.; Anish, A.Leading edge research on the renewable sources of energy is on a rise in order to meet the increasing energy demand. The objective of this project is to harvest potential energy inherent in tall buildings using micro-pelton turbine at the ground from grey water and rain water. Purified water is collected in separate tanks and a control system is designed for optimum power output from the micro-turbine which is analyzed computationally. With the escalating number of high rises and increasing awareness about renewable sources of energy, this source of energy can become a viable alternative. © 2016 IEEE.Item Simulation and analysis of energy harvesting from Grey water and rain water in high rises(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2016) Kumar, K.R.; Kulgod, S.P.Majority of the population is dependent on the conventional energy sources for their day today needs. Leading edge research on the renewable sources of energy is on a rise in order to meet the increasing energy demand without straining the environment. The objective of this project is to harvest potential energy inherent in tall buildings because of the high altitudes using micro-pelton turbine at the ground from grey water and rain water. Purified Grey water is collected in a tank placed at the centre of the building and rain water collection tank is placed at the top of the building. A control system is designed for optimum power output from the turbine and to monitor the levels of water. Separation and storage of used rainwater in a tank is also controlled. The pelton turbine is designed and further analyzed in ANSYS - Fluent, computationally for the power output. When number of high rises is escalating and awareness about rainwater harvesting and renewable sources of energy is indispensable, this source of energy will turn out to be viable option. © 2016 IEEE.
