    Influence of microwave hybrid heating on the sliding wear behaviour of HVOF sprayed CoMoCrSi coating

    CoMoCrSi superalloy powder (Tribaloy-T400) consists of intermetallic laves phase and primary eutectic phase of Co-rich solid solution. Processing of Tribaloy-T400 powder is carried out through high-energy ball milling (HEBM) technique to obtain a higher volume fraction of intermetallic laves phases. The feedstock is sprayed using high-velocity-oxy-fuel (HVOF) process on titanium grade-15 substrate. The coating microstructure is homogenized by microwave hybrid heating technique. Characterization of feedstock, as-sprayed and microwave fused coatings is done by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray Diffraction (XRD). Porosity, surface roughness, microhardness, and bond strength are measured. Adhesive wear behavior of the coatings under the dry sliding condition is evaluated at an applied load of l0 and 20 N and temperature of 200, 400 and 600 °C Fused coating exhibit higher wear resistance than the as-sprayed coatings and substrate. The hard intermetallic laves phases which are amorphous (bulk metallic glass) in nature strengthen the coating at high temperatures. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Physio-mechanical and wear properties of novel jute reinforced natural rubber based flexible composite

    This paper deals with the design, fabrication, physio-mechanical and wear characterization of the composites prepared from naturally available jute fiber and rubber matrix materials. Jute and natural rubber are cost effective, abundant and environmental friendly materials which can be used as fiber and matrix respectively. The flexible composite with different stacking sequence are manufactured using compression moulding machine and void percentage, water absorption percentage, tensile properties, tear strength, impact strength and shore hardness of the prepared composites are found along with the wear. The void content and water absorption are found to increase with increased number of plies in the composite with fibers contributing more compared to rubber. Tensile, tear, specific wear rate and hardness are found to better with a composite having minimum number of plies, which is JRJ. Charpy impact test revealed that the variation in specific impact strength of the three configuration of composites are negligible and no failure of composites were absorbed owing to their flexibility indicating all the three composites have additional capability to absorb much higher energy and suitable as sacrificial components for structural applications subjected to low velocity impact. The fractography analysis of tensile and tear test shows that the flexible composites are free from matrix cracking, but matrix tearing plays a vital role in failure. The mechanism of wear involved in the proposed composites when different constituents of the composite are exposed to abrasive medium is studied through surface morphology. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Tribological behaviour of monolayer and multilayer Ti-based thin solid films deposited on alloy steel

    The fretting wear and adhesive wear resistance of Ti-based thin solid films deposited on MDN121 steel substrate are evaluated. Plasma-assisted cathodic arc evaporation technique is used to develop the TiC-C monolayer coating and Ti/TiN/TiCN/TiN/TiCN multilayer coatings used in the study. FESEM-EDS, nanoindentation, Raman spectroscopy, optical profiler, and confocal microscope are used to characterise the coatings and wear tracks. Diamond-like carbon is observed in the microstructure of both the coatings. During the fretting analysis, the coefficient of friction (COF) is reduced by 68.49% in the case of the TiC-C monolayer coating and 42.46% in the Ti multilayer coatings as compared to the substrate. The volumetric wear loss of the TiC-C monolayer coating is lower than the multilayer coating. The wear surface morphology reveals the abrasive form of the fretting wear mechanism in both the monolayer and multilayer coatings whereas the galling failure in the substrate. During adhesive wear, the COF is reduced by 71.73% in the monolayer coating and 59.33% in the multilayer coatings compared to the substrate. The monolayer coating exhibits low friction and low wear rate as compared to the multilayer coating. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Microstructure and tribological behavior of flame sprayed and microwave fused CoMoCrSi/CoMoCrSi-Cr3C2 coatings

    This present work deals with the investigation of dry sliding wear behavior of CoMoCrSi and CoMoCrSi-Cr3C2 depositing on titanium substrate through Flame spray process, subsequently fused by the microwave hybrid heating process. Prior to the deposition of the coating, CoMoCrSi powder is milled by using high energy ball milling (HEBM) process and later 30% of Cr3C2 powder is added. Microstructural features and phase analysis of milled powders, as-coated and microwave fused coatings are inspected by using SEM with EDS and XRD process respectively. The coatings before and after fusing are tested for microhardness and bond strength by using a Vickers microhardness and universal tensile machines respectively. Dry sliding wear behavior of coatings before and after fusing is conducted against alumina counter face at ambient and elevated temperatures, also normal load is varied. The wear mechanism of both coatings is examined by employing XRD, SEM-EDS techniques. The fused coatings exhibit lower friction and better wear resistance compared with as-deposited coatings. The detailed results of each test of their coatings are discussed in this paper. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Tribo-mechanical and physical characterization of filament wound glass/epoxy composites

    The present research aims to investigate mechanical, physical and tribological properties of filament wound Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite pressure vessel as per respective ASTM standards. Here test coupons prepared from GFRP vessel are subjected to tensile, compression, flexural and impact testing to investigate mechanical properties. The physical properties are studied from density, ignition loss and water absorption tests. The tribological study was carried out using abrasive slurry erosion tester. All tests carried out in this study are as per respective ASTM standard. The results obtained from various mechanical testings are satisfactory and also almost equal in strength with respect to metallic pressure vessels. Particularly from impact testing, the strength of sea water treated sample has considerably increased. Fractography study was conducted on failed samples to study various mode of failure in detail. The physical characterization has elaborated the behavior of filament wound GFRP material under moisture environment which has observed a maximum of 0.5% water absorption rate. As per ignition loss study which reveals about 95%-98% weight of ignition loss is recorded, which indicates perfect fibre to resin ratio and almost nil or least % of void content. The slurry erosion test results are within the expected range and maximum wear of 9.67% is recorded under extreme case. The overall study reveals that the presence of voids, non-uniform distribution of fibre and matrix have an impact on the outcomes of many mechanical properties. From the above study we can conclude that filament wound GFRP pressure vessel can be used in many applications since it is a non-hydrophobic, better wear resistant and several strength parameters have also improved or unaltered under rigorous testing conditions. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Effect of microwave heating on microstructure and elevated temperature adhesive wear behavior of HVOF deposited CoMoCrSi-Cr3C2 coating

    This research reports the improvement of high-temperature sliding wear resistance of a grade 15 titanium alloy protected by an HVOF sprayed CoMoCrSi-Cr3C2 coating. The coatings have been tested in as-sprayed condition and after a post-deposition microwave heating step. The powder feedstock has been manufactured by high energy ball milling. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) equipped with the Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) methods were used for coatings characterization. Surface roughness, microhardness, adhesion strength, and porosity of coatings were also measured. The wear test was conducted at an applied load of l0 N and 20 N with varying temperatures of 200 °C, 400 °C, and 600 °C under dry sliding conditions. Co3Mo2Si, Co7Mo6, Mo3Si, Co3Mo, and Co2Mo3 were the intermetallic laves phases generated in the CoMoCrSi feedstock during HEBM process. The microwave-fused coating exhibited metallurgical bonding, homogeneous structure, less porosity, and greater hardness as compared to as-sprayed coating. Microwave-treated coating revealed better wear property than an as-sprayed coating. This was mainly due to the intermetallic formation and metallurgical bonding in coatings. The fused coatings exhibit tribo-oxide layers during sliding action which was the main phenomenon of improving the wear resistance of the fused composite coatings. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

    Development and Sliding Wear Behavior of Co-Mo-Cr-Si Cladding through Microwave Heating

    The aim of the present study is to improve the sliding wear resistance of pure titanium grade-2 substrate by developing CoMoCrSi (Tribaloy T400) cladding on it by using microwave hybrid heating technique. The developed cladding is characterized by microstructural features, phase analysis, measurement of microhardness by employing a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Vickers microhardness. The cladding and substrate are subjected to sliding wear test against alumina counterpart at elevated temperatures under dry conditions using a pin on disc tribometer. The test is performed by varying normal load and temperatures, whereas sliding speed is maintained constant. The developed clad shown partial melting of CoMoCrSi powders and obtained sound metallurgical bonding with the substrate. The high specific energy of microwave diluted the substrate atoms into cladding region which forms Cr3C2, Co3Ti, and TiC, phases confirmed by phase analysis. The cladding obtained better porosity and microhardness are 1.5 ± 0.2% ?m and 760 ± 35 Hv respectively. The substrate exhibits low microhardness of 182 ± 25 Hv. The cladding exhibits 6 times of lower volume loss and 70.14% of less wear rate with respect to the substrate. The cladding experienced least coefficient of friction is 0.55 compared with the substrate. The worn surfaces of cladding and substrate are examined. The detailed mechanism of wear is discussed in this paper. © 2019, Springer Nature B.V.

    Tribo-mechanical characterization and optimization of green flexible composites

    The use of natural fibers as a substitute for synthetic fibers as reinforcement in polymer-based composites is finding prominence nowadays. The present paper deals with the comparative study of biodegradable flexible composites fabricated using jute fabric and rubber with different configurations-namely, jute/rubber/jute (JRJ), jute/rubber/rubber/jute (JRRJ) and jute/rubber/jute/rubber/jute (JRJRJ)-using their tribo-mechanical properties as the attributes and making use of a multi-attribute decision making (MADM) approach-namely, technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (Topsis). The tensile strength, tear strength, interlaminar shear strength and specific wear rate of the proposed composites are chosen as the attributes for comparison using Topsis. The results show that JRJRJ is the best configuration among the considered configurations of flexible composites, providing the overall best tribo-mechanical properties, and the fractography study shows that the proposed flexible composites undergo failure mainly due to matrix tearing in the case of tensile and tear tests as opposed to matrix cracking in the case of stiff composites. Also, the wear study reveals that rubber exhibits better resistance to wear.     Comparison of Microstructural and Sliding Wear Resistance of HVOF Coated and Microwave Treated CoMoCrSi-WC + CrC + Ni and CoMoCrSi-WC + 12Co Composite Coatings Deposited on Titanium Substrate

    CoMoCrSi-WC + CrC + Ni and CoMoCrSi-WC + 12Co composite coatings are coated on titanium substrate by high velocity oxygen fuel method (HVOF). Prior to spraying, CoMoCrSi feedstock are processed through high energy ball milling (HEBM) in order improve the intermetallic laves phases and to reduce its particle size. The processed feedstock exhibits amorphous nature by improving laves phases and particle size of 60.12 ?m. Microwave heating energy is utilized as post heat treatment technique to improve the mechanical and metallurgical properties of as-sprayed coatings. Fused coatings reveals better properties in terms of surface roughness, porosity, microhardness and adhesion strength compared to as-sprayed coatings. Metallurgical bonding is observed in case of fused coatings due to diffusion of substrate elements. Frictional and wear behaviors have been investigated by a pin on disc apparatus at temperatures of 200 °C, 400 °C, and 600 °C under normal loads of 10 N and 20 N. Both wear trace and friction coefficients of the fused coatings are smaller than as-sprayed coatings and substrate at all test temperatures. The wear traces of fused coatings decreased with increasing the surface temperature due to the lubricant effect of cobalt oxides formed on the sliding surface. As a result, cobalt based cermet coatings are highly recommended as a durability improvement coating for the protection of sliding surface, such as high speed spindle. © 2020, Springer Nature B.V.

    Phase evolution and high-temperature wear behavior of non-equiatomic metastable CoCrNiTiMox HEA coatings fabricated by high-velocity oxy-fuel technique

    The current research aims to enhance the tribological performance of maraging steels at high temperatures by surface modification techniques. CoCrNiTiMox (x; molar fraction, x = 0.5, 1.5) high-entropy alloy (HEA) coatings with dense lamellar microstructures were deposited onto maraging steels using high-velocity oxy-fuel spray (HVOF). In order to achieve a uniform distribution of constituent elements for thermal spray deposition, mechanical alloying was employed to synthesize the HEA feedstock. The phases and microstructure of the synthesized HEA powder, as-sprayed coatings, and worn surfaces were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The as-sprayed HEA coatings exhibited metastability, with a BCC phase solid solution, NiTiO3 spinel, and an intermetallic MoNi phase for CoCrNiTiMo0.5 and Co2Mo3 phase for CoCrNiTiMo1.5. The average microhardness of CoCrNiTiMo0.5 and CoCrNiTiMo1.5 HEA coatings were 841 ± 62 HV0.3 and 952 ± 23 HV0.3, respectively. The specific wear rate and friction coefficients of CoCrNiTiMox HEA coatings exhibited a decreasing trend with an increase in temperature, owing to the formation of tribofilms on the worn surface. X-ray diffraction studies revealed the formation of NiMoO4 spinel for CoCrNiTiMo0.5 and MoO2, Co3O4 phases for CoCrNiTiMo1.5 HEA at a wear temperature of 600 °C. The investigation of worn surfaces showed a transformation in wear mechanisms from abrasive wear at room temperature to oxidative wear with mild fatigue at elevated temperatures. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd
