Item Influence of microwave hybrid heating on the sliding wear behaviour of HVOF sprayed CoMoCrSi coating(Institute of Physics Publishing helen.craven@iop.org, 2018) Prasad, C.D.; Joladarashi, S.; Ramesh, M.R.; Srinath, M.S.; Channabasappa, B.H.CoMoCrSi superalloy powder (Tribaloy-T400) consists of intermetallic laves phase and primary eutectic phase of Co-rich solid solution. Processing of Tribaloy-T400 powder is carried out through high-energy ball milling (HEBM) technique to obtain a higher volume fraction of intermetallic laves phases. The feedstock is sprayed using high-velocity-oxy-fuel (HVOF) process on titanium grade-15 substrate. The coating microstructure is homogenized by microwave hybrid heating technique. Characterization of feedstock, as-sprayed and microwave fused coatings is done by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray Diffraction (XRD). Porosity, surface roughness, microhardness, and bond strength are measured. Adhesive wear behavior of the coatings under the dry sliding condition is evaluated at an applied load of l0 and 20 N and temperature of 200, 400 and 600 °C Fused coating exhibit higher wear resistance than the as-sprayed coatings and substrate. The hard intermetallic laves phases which are amorphous (bulk metallic glass) in nature strengthen the coating at high temperatures. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.Item Effect of microwave heating on microstructure and elevated temperature adhesive wear behavior of HVOF deposited CoMoCrSi-Cr3C2 coating(Elsevier B.V., 2019) Prasad, C.D.; Joladarashi, S.; Ramesh, M.R.; Srinath, M.S.; Channabasappa, B.H.This research reports the improvement of high-temperature sliding wear resistance of a grade 15 titanium alloy protected by an HVOF sprayed CoMoCrSi-Cr3C2 coating. The coatings have been tested in as-sprayed condition and after a post-deposition microwave heating step. The powder feedstock has been manufactured by high energy ball milling. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) equipped with the Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) methods were used for coatings characterization. Surface roughness, microhardness, adhesion strength, and porosity of coatings were also measured. The wear test was conducted at an applied load of l0 N and 20 N with varying temperatures of 200 °C, 400 °C, and 600 °C under dry sliding conditions. Co3Mo2Si, Co7Mo6, Mo3Si, Co3Mo, and Co2Mo3 were the intermetallic laves phases generated in the CoMoCrSi feedstock during HEBM process. The microwave-fused coating exhibited metallurgical bonding, homogeneous structure, less porosity, and greater hardness as compared to as-sprayed coating. Microwave-treated coating revealed better wear property than an as-sprayed coating. This was mainly due to the intermetallic formation and metallurgical bonding in coatings. The fused coatings exhibit tribo-oxide layers during sliding action which was the main phenomenon of improving the wear resistance of the fused composite coatings. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.Item Development and Sliding Wear Behavior of Co-Mo-Cr-Si Cladding through Microwave Heating(Springer editorial@springerplus.com, 2019) Prasad, C.D.; Joladarashi, S.; Ramesh, M.R.; Srinath, M.S.; Channabasappa, B.H.The aim of the present study is to improve the sliding wear resistance of pure titanium grade-2 substrate by developing CoMoCrSi (Tribaloy T400) cladding on it by using microwave hybrid heating technique. The developed cladding is characterized by microstructural features, phase analysis, measurement of microhardness by employing a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Vickers microhardness. The cladding and substrate are subjected to sliding wear test against alumina counterpart at elevated temperatures under dry conditions using a pin on disc tribometer. The test is performed by varying normal load and temperatures, whereas sliding speed is maintained constant. The developed clad shown partial melting of CoMoCrSi powders and obtained sound metallurgical bonding with the substrate. The high specific energy of microwave diluted the substrate atoms into cladding region which forms Cr3C2, Co3Ti, and TiC, phases confirmed by phase analysis. The cladding obtained better porosity and microhardness are 1.5 ± 0.2% ?m and 760 ± 35 Hv respectively. The substrate exhibits low microhardness of 182 ± 25 Hv. The cladding exhibits 6 times of lower volume loss and 70.14% of less wear rate with respect to the substrate. The cladding experienced least coefficient of friction is 0.55 compared with the substrate. The worn surfaces of cladding and substrate are examined. The detailed mechanism of wear is discussed in this paper. © 2019, Springer Nature B.V.Item Investigation of sedimentation, rheological, and damping force characteristics of carbonyl iron magnetorheological fluid with/without additives(Springer, 2020) Aruna, M.N.; Rahman, M.R.; Joladarashi, S.; Kumar, H.In the present study, the magnetorheological fluid (MRF) samples are prepared using pure carbonyl iron particles (CIPs), CIPs/Claytone APA/Molyvan 855 additive, and friction reducer dispersed in poly-alpha-olefin oil. The scanning electron microscopy reveals that the Claytone additive morphology looks like a surface abundant in small folds, which connect the gaps between the spherical pure CIPs and prevent sedimentation in the MRF. The magnetic saturation properties are investigated through the vibrating sample magnetometer. The pure CIPs MRF shows (Ms) value as 146.12 emu/g, and the CIPs/Claytone APA/Molyvan indicates (Ms) as 55.12 emu/g. The magnetorheological flow curves, such as shear stress and viscosity as a function of shear rate, are investigated for the MRF samples through the magnetorheometer. The sedimentation analysis of the MRF is observed by visual inspection and shows that the CIPs/Claytone APA/Molyvan improved the sedimentation rate than the pure CIPs MRF. Finally, the experimental characterization of the prototype monotube MR damper is carried out using the hydraulic dynamic testing machine at 1.5 Hz frequency for damper peak–peak displacement length of ± 5 mm at three intervals of 0 h, 24 h, and 72 h in damper to know the effect on damping force for the prepared MRF samples against the sedimentation rate. © 2020, The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering.Item Influence of different fumed silica as thixotropic additive on carbonyl particles magnetorheological fluids for sedimentation effects(Elsevier B.V., 2021) Aruna, M.N.; Rahman, M.R.; Joladarashi, S.; Kumar, H.; Bhat Panemangalore, D.B.The present work reports the influence of different types of surface area, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic fumed silica mixed in silicone oil as a thixotropic additive on carbonyl particles based magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) were prepared. Scanning electron microscopy analysis confirms the fumed silica particles attached to the surfaces of CIPs. The vibrating sample magnetometer result shows the MRF4 and 5 have a better magnetic saturation value of 30.12 emu/gm and 40.12 emu/gm, respectively. The experimental rheological flow curve behaviours are investigated using the magnetorheometer. The Herschel–Bulkley rheological model is found to be in good agreement with the experimental curves and suggested shear thinning property is observed. The results showed that the hydrophilic silica with larger surface area type presented (i.e.MRF 4 and 5) better magnetorheological fluid characteristics in terms of shear stress, with a high value of dynamic yield stress, and have much-improved sedimentation ratio up to seven days. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.Item Development and mechanical characterization of novel polymer-based flexible composite and optimization of stacking sequences using VIKOR and PSI techniques(SAGE Publications Ltd, 2021) Mahesh, V.; Joladarashi, S.; Kulkarni, S.M.The development of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites is becoming prominent in numerous engineering applications over the synthetic fiber-reinforced composites mainly because of their environment-friendly characteristics. This article deals with comparative study on selection of optimal stacking sequence (jute/rubber/jute (JRJ), jute/rubber/rubber/jute, and jute/rubber/jute/rubber/jute) of the jute/natural rubber-based completely biodegradable flexible composite using multi-attribute decision making (MADM) approaches namely hybrid entropy-VIse Kriterijumska Optimizacija kompromisno Resenja (VIKOR) and preference selection index (PSI) methods. Tensile strength, tear strength, specific impact strength, and specific wear rate are used as attributes for MADM methods. The results show good agreement between hybrid entropy-VIKOR and PSI methods used for stacking sequence selection. Scanning electron microscope analysis is carried out to study the failure mechanisms of the proposed flexible composite. The findings of the present study led to the choice of JRJ as the preferred stacking sequence among all the three stacking sequences considered as it exhibited the best overall properties compared to other two configurations of the flexible composite. © The Author(s) 2019.Item An experimental study on adhesion, flexibility, interlaminar shear strength, and damage mechanism of jute/rubber-based flexible “green” composite(SAGE Publications Ltd, 2022) Mahesh, V.; Joladarashi, S.; Kulkarni, S.M.Determining the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composite laminates is vital for deciding their usage in any engineering applications. The matrix used and its curing characteristics are vital in deciding the ILSS of the composite. Present work deals with an experimental study on adhesive behavior, degree of flexibility, ILSS, and damage mechanism of the novel jute/rubber-based flexible “green” composite. The proposed flexible composites were prepared in three different stacking sequences, namely jute/rubber/jute (JRJ), jute/rubber/rubber/jute (JRRJ), and jute/rubber/jute/rubber/jute (JRJRJ), using compression molding technique. After determining the optimal curing characteristics of the proposed rubber-based matrix, the constituents are tested for their adhesive strength with the matrix which showed that rubber matrix system is compatible with jute fabric and natural rubber sheet. Composites are prepared and degree of flexibility for each stacking sequence is found out. Results pertaining to ILSS show that JRJRJ has better ILSS compared to JRJ and JRRJ. Fractographic analysis using scanning electron microscope reveals the mode of failure of the composites and the mechanism governing their failure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic study reveals the bonding between the constituents is good enough to be used in composites with flexibility. © The Author(s) 2019.Item A study on magnetorheological and sedimentation properties of soft magnetic Fe58Ni42 particles(Elsevier B.V., 2022) Aruna, M.N.; Rahman, M.R.; Joladarashi, S.; Kumara, H.; Meena, S.S.; Sarkar, D.; Umesh, C.K.In this study, the samples with two volume fractions (ϕ) of Fe58Ni42 (permalloy) i.e. (ϕ1 = 25 and ϕ2 = 30 %) were used as magnetic particles, silicone oil as a carrier fluid, and aluminium disterate as an additive. As received Fe58Ni42 particles surface morphology and composition of the Fe58Ni42 were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) structural information analysis confirmed Fe58Ni42 particles have a face-centered cubic phase, corresponding with the result of the high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) characterization technique. The magnetorheological properties were tested via rotational rheometer at four different magnetic field strengths. The results show that sample PMRF-30 has a maximum shear stress, shear viscosity, and dynamic modulus greater than the PMRF-25 sample. In addition, experimental shear stress flow curves are well fitted with Herschel-Bulkley rather than Bingham and Casson rheological models. The permalloy based magnetorheological fluid (PMRF) samples were prepared with a 25 % volume fraction and a 30 % volume fraction of permalloy particles with a sample abbreviation of PMRF-25 and PMRF-30, respectively. Furthermore, the sedimentation stability of suspensions of both the samples was observed using visual inspection. This method result shows the sedimentation ratio with respect to time of 72 h was 31 % and 29 %, respectively. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.Item Experimental study on two-body and three-body abrasive wear behaviour of jute-natural rubber flexible green composite(SAGE Publications Ltd, 2023) Mahesh, V.; Mahesh, V.; Joladarashi, S.; Kulkarni, S.M.The use of laboratory testing has become more significant to assess abrasion resistance in flexible reinforcement of armour and car structural components. In this study, compliant composite with constituents as woven jute fabric and natural rubber encapsulated in an NR-based B stage cured prepreg were tested for wear due to abrasion under two- and three-body conditions. Flexible composites are fabricated in three different configurations namely Jute/Rubber/Jute, Jute/Rubber/Rubber/Jute and Jute/Rubber/Jute/Rubber/Jute. The present study makes use of abrasive paper with a grit size of 60 and silica sand with size 250 μm as the abrasive medium for two- and three-body abrasion tests, respectively, and the specific rate of wear is calculated. Though the wear trend of the composites follows a similar pattern in the case of two- and three-body wear, the mechanisms governing the wear are found to be different. The morphology of the worn surface is studied with the aid of a scanning electron microscope. © The Author(s) 2022.Item Phase evolution and high-temperature wear behavior of non-equiatomic metastable CoCrNiTiMox HEA coatings fabricated by high-velocity oxy-fuel technique(Elsevier Ltd, 2023) Addepalli, S.N.; Joladarashi, S.; Ramesh, M.R.The current research aims to enhance the tribological performance of maraging steels at high temperatures by surface modification techniques. CoCrNiTiMox (x; molar fraction, x = 0.5, 1.5) high-entropy alloy (HEA) coatings with dense lamellar microstructures were deposited onto maraging steels using high-velocity oxy-fuel spray (HVOF). In order to achieve a uniform distribution of constituent elements for thermal spray deposition, mechanical alloying was employed to synthesize the HEA feedstock. The phases and microstructure of the synthesized HEA powder, as-sprayed coatings, and worn surfaces were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The as-sprayed HEA coatings exhibited metastability, with a BCC phase solid solution, NiTiO3 spinel, and an intermetallic MoNi phase for CoCrNiTiMo0.5 and Co2Mo3 phase for CoCrNiTiMo1.5. The average microhardness of CoCrNiTiMo0.5 and CoCrNiTiMo1.5 HEA coatings were 841 ± 62 HV0.3 and 952 ± 23 HV0.3, respectively. The specific wear rate and friction coefficients of CoCrNiTiMox HEA coatings exhibited a decreasing trend with an increase in temperature, owing to the formation of tribofilms on the worn surface. X-ray diffraction studies revealed the formation of NiMoO4 spinel for CoCrNiTiMo0.5 and MoO2, Co3O4 phases for CoCrNiTiMo1.5 HEA at a wear temperature of 600 °C. The investigation of worn surfaces showed a transformation in wear mechanisms from abrasive wear at room temperature to oxidative wear with mild fatigue at elevated temperatures. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd
