Item Structural optimization of rotating tapered laminated thick composite plates with ply drop-offs(Springer Netherlands, 2017) Edwin Sudhagar, P.; Arumugam, A.; Vasudevan, V.; Jeyaraj, J.In this study, structural optimization of rotating tapered thick laminated composite plates with ply drop-offs has been investigated numerically. The governing differential equations of motion of the tapered composite plate have been presented including the energy associated with the inertia force, coriolis force, displacement dependent centrifugal force and initial stress resultants due to steady state rotation. Four noded quadrilateral finite element has been formulated based on the first order shear deformation theory. Finite element analysis results are validated with experimental results for natural frequencies of the tapered plate with various configurations. Various cases of optimization problems are formulated with different objective functions in terms of maximization of natural frequencies and damping factors (individually and combined) and solved using genetic algorithm in order to obtain optimal ply sequence and ply orientation. It is shown that the optimization problem with maximization of fundamental modal damping factor without rotating condition yields the optimal layout as 90° for all the layers in the plate. It is also observed that maximization of the fundamental modal damping factor yields identical optimal orientation for uniform and all the configurations of a tapered composite plate. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.Item Effect of axial compression on dynamic response of concurrently printed sandwich(Elsevier Ltd, 2021) Bharath, H.S.; Waddar, S.; Bekinal, S.I.; Jeyaraj, J.; Doddamani, M.In this work, the sandwich is concurrently realized using high density polyethylene (HDPE) skins and syntactic foam core through three-dimensional printing (3DP). Syntactic foam core is printed using lightweight feedstock filaments having glass microballoons (GMBs) by 20–60 vol% embedded in HDPE. These lightweight filaments are used as feed material in FFF (fused filament fabrication) based three-dimensional printer. The concurrently printed sandwich is loaded axially in a compressive mode for investigating the influence of GMB loading on buckling and natural frequency. The experimental load–deflection data and modal analysis are utilized for estimating critical buckling load and natural frequencies, respectively, under axial compression. Increasing GMB content enhances load to buckle and frequency of the printed sandwiches. The natural frequency decrease with higher compressive loads. Furthermore, the fundamental natural frequency increases exponentially when these printed sandwiches are subjected to axial compression loads that are higher than the load required for critical buckling. The load–deflection data and frequency obtained experimentally are compared with numerical predictions deduced using finite element analysis (FEA), which are noted to match well. © 2020 Elsevier LtdItem Meta-heuristic optimization of buckling and fundamental frequency of laminated cylindrical panel under graded temperature fields(SAGE Publications Ltd, 2021) Bhagat, V.; Jeyaraj, J.This research deals with the optimization of buckling and fundamental frequency of a cylindrical panel under various heating conditions, which varies across the surface of the panel. A multi-objective design indicator (MODI) is derived with fiber orientations as a design variable. Finite element analysis is used to calculate temperature variation according to the nature of heating, buckling temperature, and fundamental frequency. In this study, scientific computing software is used to incorporate the finite element method with artificial neural network and particle swarm optimization technique. Five different heating cases, including uniform temperature cases, are considered. It is observed from the analysis that the in-plane temperature field of non-uniform type has a significant influence on the buckling and vibration characteristics of the panel. Further, it is observed that panel with lamination scheme of (Formula presented.) gives the higher value of MODI max compared to other lamination schemes considered. © The Author(s) 2020.Item Dynamic behavior of concurrently printed functionally graded closed cell foams(Elsevier Ltd, 2021) Dileep, B.; Prakash, R.; Bharath, H.S.; Jeyaraj, J.; Doddamani, M.In this work, functionally graded foams (FGFs) of closed cell types are three-dimensionally printed (3DP) concurrently. These closed cell syntactic foams are manufactured by reinforcing 20, 40, and 60 vol% hollow glass microballoons (GMBs) in the high density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix and are investigated for their mechanical buckling and free vibration response. The critical buckling load (Pcr) of the FGFs are evaluated using the Double Tangent Method (DTM), Modified Budiansky Criteria (MBC), and Vibration Correlation Technique (VCT). It is observed that Pcr evaluated by all three methods are in good agreement. Among all FGFs, FGF-2 exhibited higher buckling strength with 22–26% higher than FGF-1 and FGF-3. Under no-load and uniaxial compressive loads, the first three natural frequency of FGFs and their corresponding damping factors are evaluated. At first mode, the natural frequency of FGFs decreases in the pre-buckling zone and started increasing in the post-buckling zone. Damping factor exhibited reverse trend compared to the trend shown by the natural frequencies. Among all FGFs, FGF-2 (20-40-60 GMB gradation) exhibited better natural frequency. Experimental results are compared with a finite element based simulation results. © 2021 Elsevier LtdItem Free Vibration of Flax Braided Fabric PLA Beam under Edge Compression(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2022) Kanakannavar, S.; Jeyaraj, J.The present study focuses on the development of biodegradable composites to replace synthetic polymer-based composites for potential lightweight structural applications in the automobile, aeronautical, marine, and packaging industries. Initially, PLA and NFBF/PLA films are prepared by solution casting, and from these films, composite laminates are prepared by film sequencing and compression (hot-press) molding methods. First, the critical buckling load (Pcr) of composites is analyzed, and then, the influence of compressive load on natural frequency is studied. The critical buckling load-bearing capacity of PLA is enhanced with the reinforcement of NFBF (natural fiber braided yarn fabric). The composite with three layers of NFBF registered the highest critical-buckling load (Pcr) of 374.19 N, and this value is 172.13% high compared to the virgin PLA. Similarly, the natural frequency of the NFBF composites approaches minimum when the applied load is equal to the corresponding Pcr. However, a significant increase in the fundamental frequency is noticed when the applied load is higher than the Pcr. © 2021 Taylor & Francis.Item An exact solution for vibro-acoustic response of MEE composite plate(Elsevier Ltd, 2022) Arunkumar, M.P.; Bhagat, V.S.; Swetha, S.; Geng, Q.; Jeyaraj, J.; Li, Y.To the best of our knowledge, this is the first endeavor to present an exact solution to predict vibro-acoustic characteristics of Magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) composite plate. The transverse and in-plane fields are considered based on thin-plate conditions. The variation of electric and magnetic potentials is determined according to electromagnetic boundary conditions and the Maxwell equation. The stress resultants and mass inertias are used in Hamilton's principle to generate the governing equation. Here the mathematical formulation is developed using third-order shear deformation theory. Also in this work, the dynamic displacement responses are provided by finding five undetermined mode coefficients relevant to u, v, w, ϕx, and ϕy to predict forced vibration response. The forced vibration response obtained based on the developed governing equation is used to calculate the acoustic characteristics using the Rayleigh integral. The effect of magnetic and electric potential is shown in the acoustic responses. From the results, it is understood that the acoustic responses are highly influenced by the applied magnetic and electric potential. The radiation efficiency of the MEE plate did not show any variations in the lower frequency and it shows the variation near the resonant frequencies on the application of electric and magnetic potential. © 2022 Elsevier LtdItem Dynamic response of 3D printed functionally graded sandwich foams(Emerald Publishing, 2023) Bonthu, D.; Bharath, B.; Bekinal, S.I.; Jeyaraj, J.; Doddamani, M.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to introduce three-dimensional printing (3DP) of functionally graded sandwich foams (FGSFs). This work was continued by predicting the mechanical buckling and free vibration behavior of 3DP FGSFs using experimental and numerical analyses. Design/methodology/approach: Initially, hollow glass microballoon-reinforced high-density polyethylene-based polymer composite foams were developed, and these materials were extruded into their respective filaments. These filaments are used as feedstock materials in fused filament fabrication based 3DP for the development of FGSFs. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was performed on the freeze-dried samples to observe filler sustainability. Furthermore, the density, critical buckling load (Pcr), natural frequency (fn) and damping factor of FGSFs were evaluated. The critical buckling load (Pcr) of the FGSFs was estimated using the double-tangent method and modified Budiansky criteria. Findings: The density of FGSFs decreased with increasing filler percentage. The mechanical buckling load increased with the filler percentage. The natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of the FGSFs exhibited a decreasing trend with an increasing load in the pre-buckling regime and an increase in post-buckled zone, whereas the damping factor exhibited the opposite trend. Originality/value: The current research work is valuable for the area of 3D printing by developing the functionally graded foam based sandwich beams. Furthermore, it intended to present the buckling behavior of 3D printed FGSFs, variation of frequency and damping factor corresponding to first three modes with increase in load. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.Item Interlaminar, free vibration, HDT and water absorption properties of braided flax woven fabric PLA biocomposites(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2024) Kanakannavar, S.; Jeyaraj, J.The presented research investigates the influence of braided flax woven-fabric filled with polylactic acid (PLA) polymer on interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), free vibration, heat deflection temperature (HDT) and water absorption. For this purpose, flax fibre-braided yarn and its fabric are prepared using solid braiding and plain weaving techniques. Then, PLA biocomposites are developed by solution casting and hot-press moulding processes. Shear test results showed, the addition of braided flax fibre increased the ILSS of composites compared to unreinforced PLA. Natural frequencies of the composite beams are improved with the braided flax reinforcement. Composites filled with three fabric layers showed higher frequency due to higher structural strength and stiffness associated with these composites. Bio-composites HDT is enhanced with the addition of braided flax fibre from 61.78% to 132.97%. The results of a water absorption test in distilled and seawater revealed that the composites have a relatively high water uptake in distilled water. © 2023 The Textile Institute.
