Item Mechanical behavior of 3D printed syntactic foam composites(Elsevier Ltd, 2020) Bharath, H.S.; Sawardekar, A.; Waddar, S.; Jeyaraj, J.; Doddamani, M.A three-dimensional printed (3DP), polymer based syntactic foams are developed using hollow glass micro balloons (GMB) dispersed in high density polyethylene (HDPE). This work presents the buckling and vibration response of 3D printed foams subjected to axial compression. The buckling load is estimated using Modified Budiansky Criteria (MBC) and Double Tangent Method (DTM) through the load–deflection plots. The first three natural frequencies and their mode shapes are computed as a function of axial compressive load. It is noted that the natural frequency reduces with an increase in axial compressive load. It is also observed that with an increase in GMB %, the natural frequencies and critical buckling load increases. In mode-1, the natural frequency decreases in pre-buckling regimes and increases exponentially in post-critical loading conditions. Analytical solutions obtained from the Euler-Bernoulli-beam theory are compared with experimental results. It is noted that the fundamental frequency approaches zero when the axial load is equal to the critical load. The critical buckling load is estimated through the vibration correlation technique and compared with the results obtained using DTM and MBC methods. The property map is plotted for buckling load against the density of various composites. © 2020 Elsevier LtdItem Effect of lamination schemes on natural frequency and modal damping of fiber reinforced laminated beam using Ritz method(EDP Sciences, 2021) Somi Naidu, S.N.; Jeyaraj, J.; Mailan Chinnapandi, L.B.; Reddi, C.V.S.N.The current study focussed on analysing natural frequency and damping of laminated composite beams (LCBs) by varying fiber angle, aspect ratio, material property and boundary conditions. Ritz method with displacement field based on the shear and normal deformable theory is used and the modal damping is calculated using modal strain energy method. Effects of symmetric angle-ply and cross-ply, anti symmetric cross-ply, balanced and quasi-isotropic lay up schemes on modal damping are presented for the first time. Results revealed that influence of lay-up scheme on natural frequencies is significant for the thin beams while the modal damping of the thin beams are not sensitive to lay-up scheme. However, the lay-up scheme influences the damping significantly for the thick beams. Similarly, high strength fiber reinforced LCBs have higher natural frequency while low strength fiber reinforced LCBs have higher damping due to the better fiber-matrix interaction. © S.N. The approach comprises of three portions, in the first portion, heat transfer analysis is carried out to compute the non-uniform temperature fields, whereas second portion consists of static analysis wherein stress fields due to thermal load is obtained, and the last portion consists of buckling and prestressed modal analyzes to capture the critical buckling temperature as well as first five natural frequencies and associated mode shapes. Finite element is used to perform the numerical investigation. The detailed parametric study is carried out to analyze the effect of nature of temperature variation across the panel, laminate sequence and structural boundary constraints on the buckling and free vibration behavior. The relation between the buckling temperature of the panel under uniform temperature field and non-uniform temperature field is established using magnification factor. Among four cases considered in this study for position of heat sources, highest magnification factor is observed at the forefront curved edge of the panel where heat source is placed. It is also observed that thermal buckling strength and buckling mode shapes are highly sensitive to nature of temperature field and the effect is significant for the above-mentioned temperature field. Furthermore, it is also observed that the panel with antisymmetric laminate has better buckling strength. Free vibration frequencies and the associated mode shapes are significantly influenced by the non-uniform temperature variations. © 2016 Techno-Press, Ltd.Item Free vibration and inherent material damping characteristics of boron-FRP plate: Influence of non-uniform uniaxial edge loads(EDP Sciences, 2021) Gunasekaran, V.; Jeyaraj, J.; Mailan Chinnapandi, L.B.The current investigation presents the analytical investigation on free vibration and inherent material damping of boron-FRP plate, subjected to non-uniform uniaxial edge loads. Initially critical buckling load (Pcr) is obtained, then followed by free vibration response and inherent material damping values for corresponding modal indices of the FRP plate is calculated for different load fraction of non-uniform uniaxial edge loads. The buckling load and free vibration response are obtained by using strain energy method and Reddy's TSDT respectively. It is observed that the nature of load and aspect ratio influence the bucking, free vibration and inherent material damping behaviour of the fibre reinforced polymer plate significantly. © V. Initially, PLA and NFBF/PLA films are prepared by solution casting, and from these films, composite laminates are prepared by film sequencing and compression (hot-press) molding methods. First, the critical buckling load (Pcr) of composites is analyzed, and then, the influence of compressive load on natural frequency is studied. The critical buckling load-bearing capacity of PLA is enhanced with the reinforcement of NFBF (natural fiber braided yarn fabric). The composite with three layers of NFBF registered the highest critical-buckling load (Pcr) of 374.19 N, and this value is 172.13% high compared to the virgin PLA. Similarly, the natural frequency of the NFBF composites approaches minimum when the applied load is equal to the corresponding Pcr. However, a significant increase in the fundamental frequency is noticed when the applied load is higher than the Pcr. © 2021 Taylor & Francis.Item Static stability and vibration behavior of graphene platelets reinforced porous sandwich cylindrical panel under non-uniform edge loads using semi-analytical approach(Elsevier Ltd, 2022) Twinkle, C.M.; Jeyaraj, J.Buckling and free vibration characteristics of sandwich cylindrical panel with porous functionally graded graphene platelets (FG-GPL) core are investigated using semi-analytical approach. The effective mechanical properties are obtained by using properties of open cell foams and Halpin–Tsai micro mechanical model. The governing equations are obtained using Hamilton's principle, considering a higher order theory to account the transverse shear and solved by Galerkin's method. Effects of nature of in-plane edge load, distribution of porosity and GPL, porosity coefficient, GPL loading, core to total thickness ratio are analyzed in detail. It is shown that for a FG-GPL core sandwich cylindrical panel with high core thickness, even at higher amount of porosity the buckling resistance and free vibration frequency can be improved by properly tailoring both the GPL and porosity distribution. Moreover, a much variation in buckling and free vibration response with the type of in plane loading is observed and evident mode shape changes are observed with increase in aspect ratio. The cylindrical sandwich panel having a core with D-PD porosity variation and I-GPL-P pattern of GPL distribution has the maximum buckling resistance and free vibration frequency value. © 2021 Elsevier LtdItem Static stability and free vibration characteristics of a micro laminated beam under varying axial load using modified couple stress theory and Ritz method(Elsevier Ltd, 2022) Priyanka, R.; Jeyaraj, J.This paper explores the buckling and free vibration behaviors of micro laminated composite beams (MLCBs) exposed to varying axial loads using the modified couple stress theory (MCST), with arbitrary boundary conditions and layups. The size effect is captured in MCST by taking into account the material length scale parameters. In the axial direction, the applied load has either constant, linear, or parabolic variations. The equilibrium equations are derived and solved using Hamilton's principle and Ritz method respectively. The size effect is observed to be more pronounced when the thickness of the beam is similar to the material length scale parameter, and it nearly vanishes as the beam thickness increases. The small size effect variation is different for different boundary conditions. For parabolically increasing loading case, the rate of reduction of the fundamental frequency with an increase in applied load intensity is greater compared to other loadings. © 2021 Elsevier LtdItem Dynamic and buckling response modelling of functionally graded graphene oxide powder(GOP) reinforced cylindrical panels: Influence of GOP grading and non-uniformly, partially distributed edge loads.(Elsevier Ltd, 2022) Twinkle, C.M.; Jeyaraj, J.Influence of non-uniform, partial edge loads and graded reinforcement of graphene oxide powder (GOP) on vibration and buckling behaviour of cylindrical panel is illustrated. A semi-analytical approach based on higher order shear deformation theory and Galerkin's approach is used to obtain the results. Initially, the membrane stress resultants due to the applied edge loads are developed through Airy's stress function expansion. Then the stress resultants are evaluated through the minimisation of strain energy. Followed by this, equations of motion are obtained based on Hamilton's principle and the stress resultants. Influence of loading of GOP quantity, nature of grading of GOP, nature of non-uniform and partial edge loads on critical buckling coefficient and fundamental frequency and mode shapes are investigated. It is noted that the buckling and vibration characteristics are sensitive to the nature of GOP grading, GOP loading and nature of variation in edge loads. Furthermore, the fundamental buckling mode is not always typical (1, 1) mode and (2, 1) mode is observed as the buckling mode according to the variation in aspect ratio and nature of edge loads. It is found that near critical buckling load, the fundamental vibration mode changes to (2,1) from (1,1) for parabolic and partial edge loading cases for the panels with aspect ratio higher than 1.3. © 2022 Institution of Structural EngineersItem Stability and dynamic behaviour of bi-directional functionally graded beam subjected to variable axial load(Elsevier Ltd, 2022) Somi Naidu, S.N.; Jeyaraj, J.The current study emphasizes static stability and dynamic characteristics of bi-directional functionally graded beams subjected to variable axial loads using the Ritz method and Reddy's beam theory. The material property is varied as a function of the gradation pattern along with the length and thickness directions. The solutions procedures are tested against the results in the literature to show the accuracy of the present method. The influence of uniform, linear, and parabolic axial loads along the length of the beam on buckling and vibration responses are investigated. There is a remarkable variation observed in both the responses, by changing the material properties from isotropic to bi-direction functionally graded. Furthermore, the study reveals that higher stiffness is achieved by the material gradation index increment along the thickness direction compared to the lengthwise gradation index increment. Even the variations in the aspect ratios and end conditions are depicting significant variations in the buckling and vibration responses. Buckling and free vibration modes are also highly sensitive to the nature of variable axial loads and gradation index. © 2022 Elsevier LtdItem Stability and dynamic behavior of porous FGM beam: influence of graded porosity, graphene platelets, and axially varying loads(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022) Priyanka, R.; Twinkle, C.M.; Jeyaraj, J.This paper investigates the free vibration and buckling behaviors of functionally graded graphene platelets (FG-GPLs) reinforced porous beam under axially variable loads. The internal pores and GPLs are either uniformly or non-uniformly distributed along the thickness direction. Halpin–Tsai micromechanics model is used to calculate the effective elastic modulus. The variation of Poisson’s ratio along the thickness and the relation between mass density and porosity coefficients are determined using mechanical properties of closed-cell solid under the Gaussian random scheme. The equilibrium equations are derived by Hamilton’s principles, and critical buckling load and dimensionless natural frequency are determined by Ritz formulation. Results revealed that buckling and free vibration behavior of the porous FG-GPL beam are influenced by the GPLs grading pattern and the type of axially varying load. Furthermore, the grading pattern of porosity has more influence on the buckling behavior compared to the free vibration behavior. It is also observed that buckling mode and the fundamental vibration mode of the porous FG-GPL are influenced by the loading conditions and remain unaffected by the grading pattern of porosities and GPLs. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature.
