    Machining characteristics of multiwall-CNT reinforced Al/Al-Si composites using recurrence quantification analysis

    Aluminium (Al)/Aluminium alloy composites are emerging as very promising materials, especially in the fields of aerospace and automotive for their various attractive and technically demanding properties. Discontinuously reinforced aluminium metal matrix composites with reinforcements as nanoparticles of ceramics in general and carbon nanotubes in particular have emerged as the forerunner for a variety of general and special engineering and structural applications. In many of the fields where these materials find applications, machining is invariably required for getting correct geometries, dimensions and surface finish of the components. Hence, establishing the machining characteristics of these materials in terms of the deterministic nature of dynamic signals such as cutting force signals and vibration signals is very important and sought after. Machining process has been understood to be nonlinear and chaotic in nature. In this paper a relatively new technique called Recurrence Plots (RP) and Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA), a tool to analyse nonlinear and chaotic systems, is used to study the machining characteristics of cast and powder metallurgy Al and Al-Si alloys (LM6 and LM25), CNT reinforced Al/Al-Si composites produced by powder metallurgy route. Cutting force signals were sensed, acquired and analysed using RQA technique. Determinism (DET), which is one of the variables of RQA, indicates the determinism present in a signal. The values of DET were used to compare the machining characteristics. For all the three materials the deterministic nature of the cutting force signal was highest when reinforced with 0.5 weight percentage CNT, followed by respective base alloys produced by powder metallurgy method and casting route. © 2011 Jordan Journal of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

    Effect of combined grain refinement and modification on microstructure and mechanical properties of hypoeutectic, eutectic and hypereutectic Al-Si alloys

    The effect of melt treatment owing to the combined addition of grain refiner and modifier on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys having 7% (hypoeutectic), 12% (eutectic) and 15% silicon (hypereutectic) is studied. 1 wt. % of Al-1Ti-3B Master alloy was used as grain refiner. For modification of eutectic Si, 0.2 wt. % of Al-10Sr Master alloy was added to hypoeutectic alloy and 0.4 wt. % is added to eutectic alloy as well as hypereutectic alloy. Furthermore, refinement of primary Si in hypereutectic alloy was achieved by addition of 0.04 wt. % of phosphorus. The goal of this investigation is to determine the influence of combined addition of grain refiner and modifier on mechanical properties and qualitatively correlate with the microstructural changes. © 2015 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

    Elevated temperature solid particle erosion behaviour of carbide reinforced CoCrAlY composite coatings

    CoCrAlY+WC-Co and CoCrAlY+Cr3C2-NiCr coatings are deposited on nickel based alloy using atmospheric plasma spray technique. Mechanical properties such as microhardness, adhesion strength and fracture toughness of coatings are evaluated. Elevated temperature solid particle erosion behaviour of these coatings are investigated at 600 °C using alumina erodent at 30 and 90° impact angle. Coatings are characterized utilizing Scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). CoCrAlY+WC-Co coating shows higher hardness, adhesion strength and fracture toughness than CoCrAlY+Cr3C2-NiCr coating. CoCrAlY+WC-Co coating exhibited approximately 3 times higher erosion resistance than CoCrAlY+Cr3C2-NiCr coating at 90° and 30° impact angles. SEM images of eroded surfaces of coatings reveals the combination of ductile and brittle fracture. CoCrAlY+Cr3C2-NiCr coating shows severe cracks, craters, carbide pull out and chipping than CoCrAlY+WC-Co coating. High temperature erosion is a combination of simultaneous building up of material by oxidation and removal of material by erosion process. Thus reforming the erosion process to oxidation modified erosion process. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Dynamic analysis and optimization of SiC reinforced Al6082 and Al7075 MMCs

    Composites play a vital role in engineering applications. The main aim of this study was to analyse how addition of SiC will improve the damping properties of metal matrix composites (MMCs). The strengthening of composites depends on physical, mechanical and dynamic factors. In the present study, Al6082 and Al7075 aluminum alloy reinforced with (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7.5, 10, 15 and 20) different weight percentages of silicon carbide particles (SiCp) MMCs have been fabricated through stir casting method. The microstructure, density, hardness, tensile strength, impact strength, natural frequencies and damping ratio of the MMCs were determined. The mechanical tests and free vibration analysis results revealed that the addition of SiCp reinforcement enhanced the strength and stiffness of the aluminum alloy MMCs. Multi-attribute decision making (MADM) techniques like analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) methods were applied for determining the best fabricated MMCs. Based on MADM techniques, 15% SiC/Al7075 composite was selected as the best material and using response surface methodology (RSM) 13.66% SiC/Al7075 composite was found as the optimal composite material. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    Enhancement of resistance to galvanic corrosion of ZE41 Mg alloy by equal channel angular pressing

    The galvanic corrosion behavior of as-received and ECAPed ZE41 Mg alloy coupled with Al7075 alloy is investigated using zero resistance ammeter in three different corrosive environments, 0, 0.1, and 1 M NaCl, to mimic the conditions experienced in engineering applications. The mechanism of galvanic corrosion for the ZE41 Mg–Al7075 aluminum alloy is explained. It is observed that a robust surface film containing a composite layer of oxide/hydroxide of magnesium and aluminum is established in deionized water (0 M). However, only a single layer of magnesium oxide/hydroxide is detected in chloride-containing environments. Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) improved the resistance to galvanic corrosion by 58% and 54% when compared with the as-cast counterparts in 0 and 1 M NaCl solution, respectively. In contrast, galvanic corrosion resistance decreased by 26% in 0.1 M NaCl after ECAP while the as-received samples evinced pits unfavorable to be used in engineering applications. ECAP is a promising method to combat galvanic corrosion encountered by ZE41 magnesium alloy used in automobiles and components of military vehicles. © 2019 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
