Item Carbon Nanomaterials for Biofuel Cells(wiley, 2023) Udaya Bhat, K.; Bhat Panemangalore, B.P.With the increase in energy demands, an incentive is given for scientific research towards providing sustained supply of energy to mankind. Among several alternative fuels, biofuel cells are an emerging field that is given a major impetus. Using a biological and chemical process to produce clean and efficient electrical energy can reduce the usage of to-be extinct fossil fuels. To facilitate these processes, enzymes and microbes play a very important role in transfer of electrons around the electrolyte and across electrodes. Several plant and animal-based products can be used and they are discussed. Among different materials used to synthesize biofuel cells, this chapter primarily discusses carbon-based nanomaterials which are attractive due to many significant properties it exhibits. Several such materials exist like graphite, carbon nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanohorns, nanorods that differ in morphology and presents remarkable opportunities to design and fabricate different varieties of biofuel cells. The composition and power densities of various biofuel cells are presented along with its several applications like in vivo implantation, energy extraction from body fluids and fruits. Smart textiles, self-powered biosensing applications of these biofuel cells suggest that research in this direction is an endless frontier. © 2021 Scrivener Publishing LLC.Item Engineering Architectures for Biofuel Cells(wiley, 2023) Udaya, B.K.; Bhat Panemangalore, B.P.Biofuel cells employing microorganisms as biocatalysts provide an environment-friendly fuel cell configuration. When miniaturized the biofuel cell becomes an attractive candidate for powering small devices like portable electronic devices, biological sensors and implantable medical devices, etc. A lot of research has gone into exploring various types of biocatalysts, their performance, architectural designs, their benefits and limitations and this chapter reviews them. Various components of architectural design in the fuel cell is discussed. A brief review on experimental tools used in characterisation of these systems is included. © 2021 Scrivener Publishing LLC.Item Effect of nano-hydroxyapatite incorporation on fluoride-releasing ability, penetration, and adaptation of a pit and fissure sealant(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2022) Netalkar, P.P.; Maithreye, S.R.; Karuna, Y.M.; Srikant, S.; Gadipelly, T.; Bhat Panemangalore, B.P.; Dasgupta, A.; Lewis, A.Background: Dental caries is one of the most common multifactorial oral diseases and can be prevented using pit and fissure sealants. Aim: To evaluate the effect of nano-hydroxyapatite (nanoHAP) incorporation on fluoride-releasing ability, penetration, and adaptation of a pit and fissure sealant. Design: This was an in vitro study with two groups: conventional sealant and nanoHAP-incorporated sealant. Sealant penetration and adaptation were assessed using stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) (15 and 10 samples per group, respectively). Fluoride release was analyzed using ion-selective electrode (15 samples per group). The chi-square test was used to compare penetration and adaptation between the 2 groups, and an independent Student t test was used to compare fluoride release. Results: The nanoHAP group showed significantly more samples with no bubbles (P =.001) and no debris (P <.001). SEM analysis showed a significantly greater percentage of adequate fissures in the test group (P =.007). The fluoride release was significantly higher in test samples with p values of.001 and.016 on day 1 and day 60, respectively. Conclusion: The incorporation of nanoHAP into the conventional pit and fissure sealant improved its penetration and adaptation properties along with fluoride release. © 2021 BSPD, IAPD and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Item Numerical approach for optimization of magnetic roller and evaluating the performance of permanent magnet roller separator through design of experiment(Elsevier B.V., 2022) Mohanraj, G.T.; Joladarashi, S.; Hanumanthappa, H.; Shanmugam, B.K.; Vardhan, H.; Naik, G.M.; Bhat Panemangalore, B.P.; Rahman, M.R.The present study is focused on numerical analysis of magnetic roller (Mr) using finite element method magnetics (FEMM) software for different magnet disc-to-steel disc (MD-to-SD) width ratios. The numerical (FEMM) results reveal that, the optimized Mr with the MD-to-SD width ratio of 5 mm: 2.5 mm was proved advantageous because of the effective magnetic field (Mf) value of 0.89–2.59 T. The artificial neural network (ANN) modelling technique was used for the prediction analysis of obtained numerical results. Furthermore, by using optimized Mr, the lab-scale permanent magnet roller separator (PMRS) was developed and parametric optimization has been carried out using Taguchi-based L27 orthogonal array design. The significance of parameters on the overall quality of the product has also been evaluated quantitatively by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method. It was found that the belt thickness was the most influential factor in the product of desired Fe grade and recovery %. The obtained regression coefficient (i.e., R2 = 87.13 and 91.69% for Fe grade and Fe recovery %, respectively) and normal probability plot show the highest correlation between the experimented and predicted data. The results suggested that the numerical approach was suitable for designing optimized Mr for the processing of paramagnetic minerals. © 2022 Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University
